V1IE FIRST EXPEDITION.
In 1714 the French, who had tiken possession
of Louisiana, began making explorations into,
he 8ed river coulntry. St. .Jennlis was di
patched with thirty men to Natehitoehes, for the
purpose of forming a settlement. He was also
ilstructed to explore the country westward nnd

lio Orinde. He found they had erected a fort on
the west side of that river, hut her claimer ju

TheJames Howard handled nearly 10,oo0 sacks
of cotton seed as she came up, putting it out at
several oil mills as she came along. She
brought to this port 6452 sacks of cotton seed, of
which over 40() sacks came from below Vicks
burg.
Nearly half a dozen cotton seed agents came
no on the James Howard yesterday. The river
shores to the south of us swarm with them.
They make this their headquarters to plan cam
paigns and make raids.
Tlie Phil Alln is coming with over e000 sacks
of seed taken at points this side of Vicksburg.
[Natchez Democrat. October 23.1
The Nat'hes was rather late getting up Sun
day. She was detained at points below taking
on cotton se-ed for the Lee Oil Works. She had
8118 sacks.
Mr. J. Hardesty steward of the steamer Nat
cites, died aboard that steamer near Corinna
Landing. Miss., twenty-seven miles below this
point, last Sunday afternoon, of typhoid pneu
monia. His remains were put off at this point.
and were interred in the Natouea cemetery at 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
