At the dawn of day, from Gaiway's coast,
When the air blew fresh and free,
Bailed as fair a ship as the world can boast-
Balled a gallant ship, with a merry host,
On the beautiful blue sea
Gay Summer has passed with her bright glad
hours.
Where her feet have touched, lay the fruits and
flowers,
And Autumn now kisses both sea and land.
Whilst she beckons the storm, with jeweled hand.
Like a sea-gull over the creste(d wave
The Connaught wings her way
Glad cheers rend the air from her crewso brave.
From the thoughtless youth and the man so
grave,
As she hoists her colors gay
Now proudly she bunds to the ocean's swell
With a regal bow, that the sea knows well
For oft in her strength, her beauty and pride
She has braved the storm, the wind and the tide.
She carries a large rich and rare,
In her safe there's precious gold
On her snow white decks there are maidens fair.
There are women and men with silvered hair
Ayel six hundred soui--all told
Oht little they reck of the proud ship's doom.
Of that day of terror, that night of gloom:
Fate sails with the ship-with womanly grace;
In pity she veils her changeable face.
Ten days have passed-the skies are blue,
And the sun shines bright and clear
All's well with the ship and her gallant crew,
But the maid is coy, with her lover true,
The haven is now so near
On deck, 'neath the gaze of those starry skies.

eyes
And her hand is pledged, when the ship heaves
to
Sweet story so old. but forever new.
'With the laugh, the jest and the merry cheer,
There are hearts both sad and gay
One thinks with a smile of the home so near,
One thinks with a sigh and a bitter tear
Of the home so far away
But the captain and mate, with anxious eyes,
Are watching the clouds, in the azure skies-
They trust not their smiles, so bright and so
free.
They know the ways of the treacherous sea.
Now freshens the breeze, as the sun sinks low
The Connaught heads to the west
While the surging waves more fretful grow
As the air gets chill and the north winds blow,
And the petrel seeks her nest
Night cometh apace-with a grim, black sky,
And a maddened sea-for the wind blows high
And shrieks through the masts with a wail and
moan,
As the angry billows are lashed to foam.
The steamer weathers the stormy blast
As only a strong ship can
But at length in the trough of the sea she's east,
With her engines stopped, with a broken mast,
To the pamps, nl . every tmarl!
She has sprang a leak! and midst prayers and
moans
Quick orders are given in smothered tones
True, she rights at last, but fearful the flight
Twixt the pumps and sea, through the live-long
night.
Once more she's braving the Storm King's
blast.
But rocks and reels in the sea
Till the tabbath dawns-then, the die seems
east
On the "Connaught's" sido-yesl she gains at
last!
But now, mark her destiny
As hope thrills ea.h heart, Fate throws back
her veil
Then comes a wild shriek-a heartrending wail:
Tae ship is ou frel all effor'ts are rain,
Ihe will never sail o'er the seas again.
Aye! work for your lives, brave-hearted band,
For your wives and children dear
Coy maiden. cling close to your lover's hand,
So near to the grave, so near to the hind,
Oh, God I! is no rescue near
For a sinking ship-on fire-in a gale?
Nay! oeach eye scans the deep, alas I no sail
NoT there's nought but a burning plank to see
Twixt six hundred souls and eternity.
Noon comes-a boat is lowered and lost
Despair holds now full sway
But the Angel of Pity the doop has crossed,
She beckons two sails by the tempest tossed.
And leads the perilous way
On the Connaught's deck, what joy fills each
breast
As the sails appear-to the north and west
Then, men stand aghast--one heeds not their cry
Will the little brig from the west pass by?
Nay! the Minna Schiffer a hero bears,
Oh proud be his native land !
He heeds not the storm-all danger he dares,
He heads for the ship-her peril he shares
And proves the rescuing hand
The life-boats are launched-Oh! thrilling the
scene
Death and Life are the ports they ply between
(od smiles on the work. in triumph they flee
From the hungry jaws of the yawning sea.
Two hundred are saved but the shadows tell
Night soon will hold day in check
And brave Wilson knows that the evening bell
Will prove, alas! but the funeral knell
For those on the Connaught's deck.
"Alongside we'll go -more yet mu't be braved
For the sun goes down and not half are saved !
A hawser we'll throw from the vessel's side,
Not a soul must be lost!" the hero cried.
A plaything lashed to thbs Connaught's side
Seems the Minna Schiffer now
But angels look down-each effort they guide,.
The last man is saved. With whit joy and pride
Homeward, the brig turns her Drow
The Warrior an crowned with Earth's laurel
leaves,
But a halo of glory Ilearen weaves
For the Hero ot Minna Schiffer fame
With uncovered heads let us speak his name.

A WIFE'S WONDERFUL ECONOMY.

We had been out to the graveyard to bury
Mrs. Bidgeon and were riding home in the
carriage with the bereaved widower. While
he sopped his eyes with his handkerchief he
told us about her:
"In one respect I never saw her equal. She
was a manager. I've knowed that woman
that's lying out there in that tomb to take an
old pair of my trowsers and cut them up for
the boys. She'd make a splendid suit of
clothes for both of* them out of
them old pants, get out enough
stuff for a coat for the baby and
a cap for Johnnie, and have some left over for
a rag carpet, besides malCng handkerchiefs
out of the pockets and a bustle for herself out
of the other linings. Give her an old garment
and it was as good as a gold mine. Why
She'd take a worn out sock and make a brand
hoew overcoat out of it, I believe. She had a
turn of that kind for economy. There's one
of my shirts that I bought in 1847 still going
about making itself useful as winder curtains
and pantalettes, and plenty of other things.
Only last July our gridiron gave out and she
took it apart, and in two hours it was rigged
on the side of the house as a splendid light
ning rod, all except what she had made into a
poker and ice pick. Ingenious? Why, she'd
kept our family in buttons and whistles out
of the ham bones she saved, and she made
fifteen princely chicken coops from her old
hoop skirts, and made a pig pen out of her
used-up corset bones. She never wasted any
thing. Let a cat die about our house and the
first thing you knew Mary Jane'd have a
muff and a set of furs, and I began to find
mince pies on the dinner table. She'd stuff a
feather bed with the feathers she'd
got off of one little bit of a rooster.
I've seen her cook potato parings so's you'd
think they were canvass-backed ducks, and
she had a way of doctoring up shavings so
that the pigs eat 'em and growed fat on 'em. I
believe that woman could a built a four-story
hotel if you'd given her a single pine board,
or a steamboat out of a wash boiler, and the
very last thing she said to me was to bury
her in the garden so's she'd be useful down
below there, helping to shove up the cab
bages. I'll never see her like again."

and delightful than the first childlike experi
ment of a young bride who has just begun
housekeeping, and the innocent delight she
takes in her little domestic trials and suc
cesses. But when it comes to putting starch
in a man's handkerchiefs, just about this
season, her husband is apt to wish he had
married a widow with six children and a
double-barreled affliction.-lPuck.
