Which is the city of health? This question Is just now under discussion in most of the Western papers, and every city has put In a claim to this great honor. St. Louis appears so far to have the best of the fight. Its rate of mortality for some months past has fallen as low as 11.10 in a thousand, and the total number of deaths have only slightly exceeded 100 a week, a very fair showing for a city of the population of St. Louis. The percentage of deaths of children under flvo years of ago was also much smaller than in any of the other ities of the Union. Chicago and Clncinnati come next, while Charleston has the worst record in the whole list. New Orleans also occupies a very unpleasant position there. The comparison, of course, is made with the total population. The high death rate of New Orleans is owing solely to the high death rate of the negroes. If the com parison be made between the white population of these cities, New Orleans will present as good a record as any city in the U nion. Indeed, in the list given in the Western papcrs, it is shown that New Orleans has by far the best record in the matter of epidemic diseases. While diphtheria raged in New York, Brook lyn, Baltimore, Philadeolphi and St. Louis, scarlatina in New York, Brooklyn and Chica go, and measles and whooping cough in New York, the total number of deaths from all these causes in New Orleans during the whole month amounted toonly ten. The only epi demic disease prevailing here was small-pox, rad this, of course, among the negroes. Dur ing the past two months no less than fifty four persons over seventy years of age have died in this city. Of these no less than twenty-six were over eighty; ten over ninety, and flveover 100. Few cities can present as gooda showing as this. Verily, New Orleans is a healthy city for the aged, and persons who come here can safely count on at least half a century of life.
