(New Tork Star.l the state of affairs prevailing qy,lt will certainly appear strange immigration to the United d lly four-fifths of what two6. he reason is simply that the tears he will not better his condition bytIng in the United States; for he does t know, or does not believe, that we have got over the worst, and are now gradually emerging from our inflation period, and resolutely settling down to good, lido work. Our cities are still over crowded with unemployed artisans but the agricultural districts of the West and South, especially of the latter, hare plenty of room and a hearty welcome for the sturdy German laborer. He can there purchase a farm at a more nominal price for les, indeed, than he would have to pay or a year's rent for the same number of acres in hii native land. Our agricultural Implements and our live stock are superior to those of lermnany; our facilities for shipping farm produce and disposing of it at remunerative p rices are goold; our schools are goodx; and there are many more good things in store for the immigrant who comes to our shores and eassist in developing the dormant resources of our great expanse of agricultural domain. Tnae fertile, virgin soil of the West and South la the proper plane for the display of well directed energy, and it is there where the hon est toiler will find his labor not only amply rewarded, but there will be generous aid given him by the resident population- -and aur honest, capable and industrious unem ployed to independent ownership and culture v( homesteads on fertile lands. In the West, and especially in the South, there are numer ouns Iumigration societies In existence, whose purpose is the encouragement of im ton and extending aid to agricultur m abroad or from other sections eUnited States. So anxious are the laud owners to dispose of their lands and lo see them cultivated that the Louisiana Immigration Association, for instance has r Gemay urgently recommended that societies to encourage immigration be organized in *very parish of the State and called a State convention to be held in N'ew Orleans on the second Monday of January next, "to take Into consideration the most active and feasi ble means that will bring to our State good and reliable classes of immigrants." In this convention the planters, the several commer dal bodies of New Orleans, and the municipal government of the Crescent City will be rep fbeented. The objects of the convention are "to bring into use the many thousands of mm of lands now not fully cultivated." This iiaply means that good lands-uplands for cotton and the rich low lands for sugar and can be had in Louisiana at very easy gmain fact, for less than what the yearly mtal for the same number of acres amounts t oEurope. courtesies of War.
