Mr. Charlhe Nathan, .who Is trying to establish a linI of steamers butween NEW OI11EAN5 AND THE W1ST INn0IA5, Is now in 8... Demerraa and the liatrbadoes. lio d.ily reud a similar drom nds so time ago before the Morerhants' lxchange of your city. so that it is unnoeessary to give you oven a synopsis of his a dross hero. Thie eff.,ct produced on the merchants who heard him was a favorable one. and the indications now are that Mr. Nathan will receive something more substantial than encouragement from the merchants of St. Louis. Nearly overy large shippor here admits that the establishmont of suCh a lino of steamers as Is proposed by Mr. Nathan would do more for St. Louis trade than a dozen now railroads contering at the UJton dlepotcould do, and if they can be as sured that Mr. Nathah's attempt, to open such a line will tie successful they will, without a doubt, join the movement and subscribe liboral Iy to the stock of the Mississippi Valley Trading Company. Mr. D. P. itowi nd.'a prominent commission merchant hero, told your oorro spond(ent yesterday that every leading business man in St. Louis heartily indorsoed the propoi tion to establish direct trade connections be tween Now Orleans and foreign ports, and he predicted that in a few years Now Orleans would become one of the greatest shipping ports In the world. The corn and flour and breadstuffs and provisions generally, that are now shipped to England and other foreign countries by the way of New York will eventually be carried by Now Orleans steamers. RIVER TRANSPORTATION is always much ehoaper than railroad transpor tation and the only natural outlet for the foreign trade of the Mississippi Valley is the mouth of the Mississippi river. The jetties once com pleted. the establishment of steamship lines be tween New Orleans and the loading commercial portsof the world is insured. Thileis theway St. Louis merchants talk, and it now remains to be seen what they will do towards putting the first of the new ocean lines into operation. A meeting of the members of the Chamber of Commor ce is to be held na xt Saturday for a con sideration of Mr. Nathan's proposition. THE MILITIA FBVER that spread among the book-keepers, clerks and other employes of the leading houses of St. souls, upon the close of the strikers' war last summer, has resulted in the formation of four or.five oompanies of State militia and ten com panies of city militia. Three of the latter com panies were sworn in a couple of days ago, and the remaining seven companies will irobably be sworn in some time next month. This reagi ment of city militia was organized under a pro vision of the new city charer and is to be called the "Police Reserve." The whole regi ment numbers about too men, and is under the control of the Board of Police Commissioners. The expenses of the regiment for arm- and equipments are to be borne by the merchants ot the city. The city itself will be put to no ex pense at all. except when the regiment is called into ative service. The companies use the as sombly rooms of the different police stations of the city for drll and armory purposes. One of the now companies of htate militia numbers about seventy men, and was sworn in some time ago. Other companies have been organ ized, but have no arms and equipments yet. and are not sworn in. There "are m e w na mn no insu . r , rrnr b.n+r.A , are FLOWERS MADE OF PORCELAIN. delicately wrought and tinted, with stands in majolica. forming one of the most ornate styles of parlor decoration that have been shown. The vases, marquoterie and ebony tables, jar dinieres and work-stands are simply the per fection of art, and art in the highest significa tion of the term. The work-stands were of eb ony, a glass cover revealing the satin quilted oval shaped receptacle for the work, while near the lower part of the stand was inserted a beau tiful china plate, most artistically decorated. Two glass ca-es in abo it the middle of the Iizaar displayed lovely things in baccarat. Bo hemian glass, maiolica and Dresden wares. A punch bowl of finest Dresden was superb; vases of Bohemian glass, shaped in antique style, with stands of wood carved in one solid piece, made in Switzerland. A "Psyche" jewel rycase was beautiful, and the very latest con colt for the toilet stand; a little silver table holds the cut-glass scent bottles and jewelry box, and the tall back supports the glass mirror. THE PATENT FOLDING MIRRORS are a very quaint and rare design; the doors are of Japanese ware, and when closed form a convenient mode of laying aside the costly glass. The workboxes of rosewood and ebony are massive and handsome; the stock of glove and handkerchief boxes, writing desks, music boxes, musical albums and flower baskets is the finest that has been yet displayed in the city, being importations from the very first Pa risian houses. THE LATEST FASHION IN VASES is to have them of oxydized silver--"Galvano" and the effect produced is striking; these are mounted on ebony stands; the shape of the vases is ordinarily after the medieval style, with flower stand to match. THE BEAUTIFUL BACCARAT ornaments come in all the latest and most fashionable designs. Baccarat is the name of the little French village where this lovely glass is manufactured. Nextto porcelain, which uses ,lIor so daintily nothing is more fascinating than fine glass. it possesses all the sparkle of a mountain brook with all the brilliancy of a facetted diamond.
