Tbh machinery and wreck of the Shannon,
which Was to have been sold at suction yester
day, was diposed of at private sale to M.

The boilers and machinery of the Dawn will
be sold at auction by D. E. Morphy & Son to
morrow at 11 a. m.. on the levee, head of Erato
street.
Cbipt Charlie Arthur has returned from Mo
bile.
Capt. Ross. of tht Liberty. gave bonds for his
npsearance, and left Wer nesulay venling for
Evansville. As the charges preferred against
Oapt. Ross-enmbIzzlnme t-are very serious,
and as no investiga ion of them will be had un
til his return, we deem it not. Improper to ask

The following a from the St. Louis Repubil
can of a late date. The writer of it acents to
haveforgottenthat in those days there were
such hoa's as the Natchez. Princess. Charmer
and Vicksburg: in every respe,'t they were the
uals of any boats in the St. Louis or Louis
le trade, and the time of the Natchez and
lneess has never been male by any boat run
n ngto either of those ciues. The history of
steamboatinm will snow that the boats engaged
in the Vloisburg trade have always been the
peers of those of any other, and without a
guestion the superior in point of speed. St
Louls will secomplish wonders when she
equals, to say nothing of surpasslng them.
'The new John W. Cannon, it is claimed, will
ecllipasthe obert E. Lee. both in speed ant
manifloenoe. It really seems strange that
u palaces pn be profitably run in the New
nrea.s and Vicksburg trade. and not to St.
Louis. Twenty years ago the finest and fastest
steamers ran to St. Louis and Louisville. These
boats cme in for a share of the lower river
patroage, and so divided the business that it
as diofficult matter for the Vicksbug and
ateboh packets to make money. They culd
lelyompete with their more magnificent
rivals. much less excel them as they
b6 been doing for the past decade. But it's

this morning to contract for a new boat
for the Smilunole's nlachiery. Leave to
day: Katie Stockdale, for Pittsburg; Ohio.
Pomeroy. Cons Willer, for Memphis; Golden
City. for New Orleans. The Ctherokee will come
over to the wharf this evening and go to Pitts
burg to-morrow, where she will load fr St.
Louis and run in that trade regularly till low
water sats in. She ngts the reshipping freight
of the Tntum, amounting to 185 tons.

Lake Superior opens a trl-weekly line to Han
nibal, leaving on her first trip to day. The
Anchor Line have no boat as yet for Saturday,
although the Centennial is here.

York, where he purchased an outfit for his new
olipper, including ehandsliers and rosewood
furniture.

Mr. D. R. Barmore has drafted and made the
moulds for Cap'. J. P. M,,Elroy's and Capt.
Henry Harper's new steamers, and will go to
work at once upon them. He has also set up
the frame of the fifth bharge for the Mississippi
Valley Transportation Company, and he has
room for mre boats at his spacious yard.
Come on. you that have boats to build. Bar
more can build 'em.

CAIno. April 15.-The rt. L. & S. P. L. are still
having good cargoes at ten and twenty cents to
all points. They are given so much business at I
these rates that they nearly always get out be
hind time, and if this thing continues long
there is no telling how far they will come out
behind. They get the greater part of the way
business, but It is a small matter at this season.

freight and people. Mr. Frank Stein, her
first clerk, has entered up non the study of higher
mathematics, and wants to know if seven men
should visit a given point, No. I going to it

third day No. 4 every fourth day, No. 5 every d
fifth day. No. 6 every sixth day, and No. 7 every
seventh day. how long would It be until they all
should arrive at that point on the same day?
