Loulsville. and all Intermediate points, Charler Miller In com mand, A. Elliott Miller clerk. The Houston is a new boat, and one of the finest on the Western waters. Her officers are veterans, and compose one of the best crews that navigates the Mi sis sip. Her accommodations for passengers are the highest excellence, the berths are as com fortable as they well can be, and her table rivals in richness and variety that of a first-class hotel. .. The tug N. M. Jones leaves this a. m. with a partyto meetthe Cannon. Charlie Mller'is a practical boatman and a food manager. The clipper Natchez will arrive this evening from Vilcksburg, and leave again Saturday, as Uhhe Gov. Allen. leaving every Friday and Monday lands at C irrollton: also on the down trip on Sunday. The tare each way is only ten cents, the proceedw to be devoted to the orphan asylums of the city. The Bart Able will arrive this afternoon and leave Saturday, as usual, for Alexandria and (rand Ecore. The new Paris Brown leaves Cincinnati to day. and either the Robt. Mitchell or U. P. Sohenck Saturday. The rattler Charles Morgan, Albert SBtin master, will arrive to-night and leave Saturday for Olncinnati. The Anchor Line steamer John A. Scudder, from St. Louis, is also due to-day, and will re turn Saturday. The New Orleans and Bed River Transporta tion Company's packet Danube, Ohas. Thorn master, U. W. Drown clerk, leaves Saturday at a p, m. for Shreverort. The St. Francis Belle leaves daily at 7:3o a. m. from Btenville street for Westwego. running in connection with the New Orleans and Texas Railroad to Donaldsonville. The fleet and unusually regular trf-weekly upper coast packet Mary Ida, J. A. Ruiz master, Edw. Nicolle clerk. leaves this to a. m. promptly for the Ben Turead plantation. The Mary Ida is a daylight boat both ways. The regular soemi-weekly Bayou Lafourche packet Eva U. D. Terrehonne master, Thomas Knee and M. H. Landry clerks, leaves to-day at l6 .m. promptly, going through to St. Mary's Church. The elegant and fileet United States mail and passenger steamer Frank Pargoud, James H. Pepper master, W. N Calmes clerk, leaves to day at 5 p. m. for Vicksburg and the bends, thbrugh to Greenville. The Henry Tote, making semi weekly trips to Bayou Lafourche through to Thibodaux will be at the landing this morning, and will leave to-morrow at 10 a. m. J. H. Aucuin in command. M. H. Landry clerk. Ntreck clerk, leaves to-morrow at 5 p. m. for Bayou Sara. xchabnge C lippngs, June 17. Cincinnati Commercial: (Capt. Sam. S. Brown and Capt. James A. Blaekmore inspected Capt. J. J. Brown's new Bayou Sara packet Edward J. Gay. at the Ma rine Ways yesterday. They pronounce her model easy and faultless. and say she is the best chained boat ever built. Her cabin will be one of the most magnificent on our waters, be ing entirely of a new and original design. NEw ORLEANS, June 14.-It may be said that there has been very little improvement in Western river boats during the past thirty years. During the same period the improve ments in ocean navigation have been very marked. It is not an exaggeration to say that a steamship now, carrying double the tonnage of the vessel of thirty years ago, burns less fuel and makes the voyage in less time. Ocean steamers are now mostly built of iron. The ratio of the length to the width is greater. The screw has taken the place of the paddle wheel. The compound engine has taaen the place of the single cylinder. The results of these changes are before our eyes. Can we not Introduce some of these improvements on our river boats? All of them doubtless, with the sin gle exception of rhe screw. The compound en gine is to be found on the Kehlor. Stanard, and some others of that line, but none of our pas senger boats are "engined" (to coin a new word) after this system. The life of a boat on our waters, provided she has a natural death. is about six yeats. During this perio I she has required for repairs half as much as her origi nal cost. If she were built of iron, she wo-tld last say twenty or twent,-five years, besides re quiring much less annual repairs. how, if a boat strikes a snag or rock. down she goes in five or ten minutes. Were she properly pro vided with bulkhb ads it is evident that not one boat would be lost from sinking where five are lost now. Then again our provisions for putting out fires on boats are miserably inadequate; in fact, as a general thing, in case of fire they are never used, as the boat is burned up before the apparatus can be got to work. The hose is always unattached to the pump, and before it can be attached the boat is burned up. Again. the pump itself is of little for, e. Now steam boat property is extra hazardous. The boat wears out in six or seven years. She sinks in five minutes. She burns up in two. Can it be said that this condition of affairs can not be improved; could not the life of a boat be length ened three times: her liability to sink be dimrin ished nine-tenths; the chances of burning up be reduced one-half? We shall see what we shall see, but what I would add now is a con demnation of the practice of building boats with bluff bows and "bad runs" for the sake of carrying a few tons more of freight, thus re ducing the speed of a boat by one-fourth, more or less. Thy proper model for speed would give the hull of a boat the turm of two triangles joined bow to bow, a line drawn across the hull half way between bow and stern, rep resenting a comm,,n bow of the two triangles. In our shall w w,,ters, and in order to have a certain capacity for freight, we are compelled to depart from toe theoretical line, but we cou'd at least make a faint approximation, and build boats with models somewlat better than tha" of a scow. Yet I see boats, norably in the Now Or leans and St Louis tr ide-passe nger boats, .too-in which lines for speed are all sacrificed for the purpose of carrying, say 10e toes more ireight. They have plenty of steam power to drive them at a good rate of speed, but owing to their miserably modeled hulls their stneed is slow. With hulls pr-'perly shaped. I have no doubt those boa s would make the trip to St. Louis in one day or more less time, thus saving in "running expenses" stC0 or $500, besides giving greater sati-faetion to pas sengers, and even to the offilers themselves. If 1 a certain capacity for freight is required, make the hull longer, but give her a sharp bow and S'ood "run." hew bolts can be so'shaped that en light the model is good, but as they are loaded down the lines are fuller, thus giving them a good mndel wlen going up stream with but little freight., when speed is required and the current is adverse, and giving freight ca pacity when loaded and the current is with them. I commend the models of the Natchez I and Lee as approaches to perfection. ST UDENT. Madison Courier: TUDENT. Capt, John T. Guire. the submarine diver, who has been here for several weeks in the in terest of the owners of the sunken Calumet. makes a proposition to attempt one of the most - astonishing feats ever thought of. He proonses I to walk from Cincinnati to Cairo on the bottom of the Ohio river in twenty-five oats. and has t friends who wil back him with $10l.0o. If he attempts it he will have a ilflt to accompany I him, upon which will be pla-ed ann air Dump and other necessary apparatus, lie will clalim the privilege of coming up whenever he deems it necessary, but proposes to w lt every foot ,f ( the distance in the time specified. Mr. Guire is a "solid" man. mentally and physically. He is thick-set,strong and tough. His exploits sev-. enty-five feet under the waves at St. Louis made I him famous thr'ughout the country as a diver, - and those who known him personally equally b admire him for his social qualities and stamina m of character. He is a modest. unassuming gen- 8 tlemaa, and when he makes a propositlon to walk from Cinclnnati to OCaro on the bottom of the river, those who know him best know that he means it, and he will aooomvllih the feat or approach it as nearly as possible for an air breathing mortal.
