`..I Rt t; · ohe London Tke riaproduces from afs wa a paper a long and lnterestang ot has all the appearance ofautlbti ; a iLraculous discovery made by Signor ,a botanist, who has made a speiali yof $outh American fora for somren yrn Hiis discovery is nothing less thatl of suspending animation In antmal. fnl indeflnite.period, and of rstoreing jfat docording to the accounts, Signor Rostura i is been operating for some time, and with t s most eatisfactory results, in connection itth Mr. Grant, who has a refrigerating es ush..ment on one of the .headlands of Syd :gharbor, New South Wales. His exzperl etj upon domestic animals have resulted tn mogst perfect success, and all question ip ii gnor Bostura's abllity to do all that he i~m5s appears to be at an end. The process is s sery' sI1w one, both to suspend and restore ainaation, and the two results are respect ji.ly produced by a vegetable poison and its idote, both of which were discovered In o America. Two drops of the poison are in the ear with a hyperdermic syr and in a few minutes vitality Is sus pied; the heart ceases to beat, the eyes f ie glared and the body rigid as in death,. ,aren seems that the ordinary process of y4gy supervenes as In case of actual death, , in order to prevent this, refrigeration - to be resorted to. The subject is frozen S.I becomes as brittle as glass, and is 4 away In a refrigerator for weeks, or Iis, till Signor Bostura chooses to resus ,lats it. The subj5et is then placed in warm d ater until a normal blood heat is obtained, wfhm a few drops of the antidote are injeoted .i. few minutes vitality Is restored and the s aject is returned to precisely the same con ;tttans of life that existed when animation was suspended. The practical result at which the inventor aimed, and wh ch interested Mr. Grant in his aperlments, was the transportation of live stock from Australia to Europe. The advan' I tnges of the process in this respect can be readily appreciated. But it is not in this con n~etion that this wonderful discovery assumes its most Interesting phase. It appears that Sthe inventor has been Induced by the suocess of his experiments on dumb animals to re ueet the government to allow him to operate n a condemned criminaL This request, it ms, was granted, but while the experi; ent, by reason of fortuitous circumstances, to realize the results expected, still the ilure served to prove the infallibility of the rocess, even more satisfactorily than corm flte success would have done. The facts of the case were, succinctly, as follows: The person subjected to this treatment was a perfect animal, of splendid physique and elopment. In physical beauty, Intellectual eopment and utter absence of moral he appears, from the account, to have na sort of materialization of Bulwer's argrave, the souless man of "A B.range 4ws." His crimes were innumerable and of h an atroolous and diabolical character, tat the processes of the law, which had prely rescued him from popular fury, al hough they resulted in his condemns tion to death, were the merciful means of protraoting his . existence. He was selected as the subject for the experiments of Signor Bostura for two ireasons-.irt, because of the utter absenceof ny4alit1ation for his crimes; and, secondly, cause of his purely physeical terror and fear f death, which, however, appeared to be at tended by no sort of oons.cIusnesa of hisguilt or reaonrse for the cruelties he bad perpe Srated. The objeoct of the Governor General, E who could not release the criminal from the penalty of the law, in turning him over to Blgnor Bostura, appears to have been merely to allow him to escape from the absolute ter t'I which possessed him, expecting him to be revived at the last moment to suffer the gpunisment he had Incurred. SThis was the understanding with Signor Ri)tuir, and this was what the latter under took to perform. The first process was a com ' ;pliet sucese but, so great was the vitality of Vthe subjeot, not until he had been subjected to a seoond injection. He was placed in the re frigerated room of Mr; Grant's establishment and frozen stiff and stark. Had he remained in this condition the experiment would have proven a complete success and the criminal wsould have suffered the penalty of his crimes. But It seems that Mr. Grant's system of re 2 frigeration was defective. He did not use ice, but the same process which is used in our ice .llauftactorres. His machinery broke down, " of his supply of ammonia was exhausted. At any event, for several days he was unable to keep the temperature of the apartment be low freezing, though, for not less than forty elight hours preceding the day fixed for the resuscitation and execution of the criminal, he had again been frozen hard and stiff. When the appointed time came Bignor Roe tora applied the antidote and succeeded in esuaucItating the subject, but only after re peated efforts and with the utmost difficulty. The first indication of revival was the sudden and violent opening of the mouth, with a Sudden and cranking sound, as if the lower "Jaw had been jerked down with violence. The tongue burst out of the mouth with a sort of explosion. A gleam of intelligence shot into the eye, only to be suffused in atantly by a flow of yellow and offen sive lohor. But the most wonderful thing was that a distinct articulation came from the throat, rather than the tongue of the unhappy creature. The sound was de scribed as horrible in the extreme, and as hav ' ing the same effect on the sense of hearing that the corruption exuding from the body would have on the sense of touch. "Let me be! I am dead!" were the woa4s that were uttered. Scarcely had they been spoken when the process of reeuclttatlon was completed, only to reach the horrible result. During the time that Mr. Grant's establishment was out of order, decay had taken place and, though Ssuspended for the time, when animation was restored the effecos manifested themselves. The man had asareely spoken when his flesh Slipped from the bones, and nothing but a loathsome mass of liquid, detestable putree oenoe was left in the hands of the operator. T. result of this experiment will recall the qupposititious case drawn by Edgar A. Poe in the story of the "Case of Mr. "aldemar." It shows the wonderful genius of Poe, who foresaw a discovery of this kind, forty years before the rest of the world d.reamed of it. Although Poe's story has generally been treated as a mere jew d'eeprit, it may be regarded, in the light of this dis eovery, as a case of wonderful foresight and prescenceonbdspart. .
