RAWr,IN4, Oct. 8.-The courier from Payfae's camp brings the following accouitt of the at. rival of the relief: He reports that (en. Merritt, on his p.. protach to I'ayne's camp and when only miles from it, discovered hostile Ute n.g o'rt from a neighboring canon. The drliscveretl Mrritt at the same mom the (lGneral, perceiving this from the se tiorn, ordered his men to fall back In lý p :e treat. The Indians were enoourag mancsluvre to rush from their hing p Merritt pushing his troops to a ruan . thorn out on the open plain, He then eg&v9e the order to wheel, which the men did with admirable precision, showing in a minute's spr.ce a bristling front w'ýere before had been a seeming straggling rout. The Geperal did not wait for the foe to attack; in less than two minutes his men poured loto the Utes a fire which checked their advance and forced them to seek every available cover. Thebat tie lasted but a few hours, during which time the Indians suffered the lose of thirty-seven killed, while Merritt did not lose a wan. The Utes got such a severe drubbing that they threw up the white flag In token of their wish for a parley. This was granted by Gen. Merritt, and several chiefs entered his camp f rthwith. S.everal of the chiefs were willlng. to surrender; others were not. Merritt toldP/ them that if they would give up their arms and ponies he would do nothing more with them for the present. One or two chiefte asked whether Merritt intended to go to the agency with his troops. lie replied that he did. After a brief consultation all the chiefs agreed to a common answer, which was that it the United States soldiers invaded their reservation they would light them until the last of the Utes lay dead. After this they left Merritt's camp and returned totheir own. Merritt then pushed forward with oil haste and joincd Payne with the remnant of Thorn- S burgh's command. The same MAuday evening, before Merritt's arrival, Payne had been most gallantly suc cored bty a arlored company of 45 men of the Ninth Cavalry, under Capt. Dodge.ge. His com pany came down Bear river, passed Steamboat Springs last Friday night, and learning of Thornburgh's fight and Payne's situation re solved to get to Payne's sloe at every hazard. In their attempt they were met by the be ieging IUtaw, wilho turn. d upon them with a fire so hot that they were compelled to dis mount. In the courao of a subsequent ea gagKmtent this brave colored company lust every horse but two. (Gon. Merritt, on his arrival, found that Payne had held out splendidly, losing only two men since the twenty-ninth, when Ban kin left. MERRITT'S EN(IAOEMENT DENIED. CHEYENNE, Oct 8-7:30 p. m.-The later re ports from Rawlins and the front contradict the report brougnt in this morning by the mail-carrier ot a light between Merritt's com mand and the Utes.
