J A new explanation of the boom in
Manhattan and one coming from what
ppeana to be an authoritative source
is that George Gould and his associates
have determined to increase the capital
ctocic of the Manhattan Elevated Rail
way from 18000000 to 00000000 The
stockholders rights in this Increase
would be worth about 1250 a share
k which amounts about to the Increase in
the stock in the past few days
Th story is that the 12000000 In
crease is to be used to pay off claims
against the company putting it on a
altar footing
The feature of the stock market to
day was the strength of New York Cen
tral and ita steady advance In con
I nectlon with the continued etrength of
Manhattan
Manhattan Above 104
Manhattan led the market for the
r greater portion of tho day and was
firmly held by the insiders It made a
now high record crossing 1H with gales
not nearly eo heavy as yesterday This
I ts the highest price at which it has sold
ince 1833 and the absence of any
pressure today was considered strongly
a corroborative of the existence of a pend
1 ing deal
r George Gould and several of his ad
i visers were reported to have held a 1
L prolonged conference today over the I
proposition to permit a change of con
trol in the Manhattan if road but
officials of the system declined to say
4 anything about It
Four Wall street firms which have

Oil interests which heretofore have not

times before
I The rest of the market was strong
and in most Instances higher levels
te were reached than those of yesterday
t Missouri Pad no and all the other
t Gould issues were higher Tho former
I advanced nearly two points from tho

lU preferred made a good gain
Butler Bros who usually act for the

MYSTERY STILL
Real Cause of President Alfred I
Walters Retirement After I
Stormy Meeting of Railroad
Directors Not Yet Explained
DUE TO DIFFERENCES
Returned to Hit Office ToDay and
Conferred with General Agent
Schaperkotter but Both Declined
to Make a Public Statement
President Alfred Water of the L
high Volley Railroad whose resignation
was accepted yesterday at a stormy
meeting of the Board of Directors In
Phiadelphia would give no other rea
son today for his action than that
given yesterday
gven
It I duo t differences of opinion
regarding the management of the com
pany
Mr Walter returned to his city home
at No 3 West Seventythird street last
evening He was at his office at No
2 Cortlandt street at U3 oclock this
morning
He sent for J F Schaperkotter Gen
eral Agent of the Lehlgh system and
held a fifteenminute conference with
him At Its conclusion Mr Sohaper
kotter said for Mr Walterl
There will be no statement Issued to
day regarding Mr Walters retirement
The reasons given yesterday must
stand for the present
The resignation of President Whiter
which take effect on Nov 3 was the
subject of much comment in the busi
ness world today The meeting yesterday
terday was the first Mr Walter had
attended in months and was undoubt
edly tho stormiest ever bcd by the
board
Mr Walter was put in the presidency
by the MorganDroxdfltotesbury In
terests in 1SD7 and closely followed the
policy of that clique
Stockholders began to crumble after
some months I was apparent that
Mr Walters policy would not do The
meeting yesterday was the climax
I Is said that the road would shortly
be placed on a dividendpaying basis It
Is also hinted that Mr Walters resig
nation was directed by Mr Morgan him
eelt
It was reported in WaU street that F
B Gowian whose father w a well
known President of the Philadelphia
and Reading llallroad some years ag
would ters successor probably be chosen a Mr Wal
1 M Gowen Mar Succeed Walter
PHILADEUPIIIA Nov 20In finan
cial circles here the name ofF M
Gowen is moat prominently mentioned
as the most probable successor to
Alfred Walter as President of the Le
high Valley Railroad The position Is
sold to have ben offered to and de
clined by Samuel Rn Fourth Vice
President of the Pennsylvania Railroad
Rai
road I is declared that the successor
of Mr Walter whoever he may be
will b one who Is In accord with
views of President liner of the Bead
Ing who is also one of the Lehlghs
directors dir Baer has not been In
accord with Mr Walter for mora than
a year
Many persons hero believe that Mr
liner himself will elected tho new presi
dent of the road

of the collapse of the Millvllle Stock
Building Association this Is the bluest

ever known Small merchants median
Ics the frugal laboring claws widows

The feeling against Richard I How
el the missing secretary of the de
funct association Is ud that violence
might be done him rfhould he te found
Howell has been secretary of the Insti
tution since It was formed In 1874 Ho
was considered one of the beat and mst
trustworthy citizens of the place But
over night that feeling of pride and
rlac has turned to one of bitter hat
red and
contempt
George B Langley president of the
association has found that the concern
has liabilities of 1105000 and less than
116000 in assets The directors do not
know by what method of bookkeeping
this loss was so covered that It a
not found until now
unt
For ten years thn stock has been pay
Ing 5 per cent dividends and only a few
days ago It was acting at a premium
of 5 per cent Today the stock Is worth
about 10 cents on tho dollar
Until two years ago tho Income of
the association had been J33000 a year
For the last two years the income ha
been only 120
The only explanation offered for the
deficit was that tne methods of book
keeping permitted the secretary to re
ceive large sums of money paid on ac
count of the principal of outstanding
mortgages and to use such sums In pay
Ing dividends to the stockholders Thu
for many years dividends had been paid
to thorn from the principal of their In
vestments Instead of their earnings
When Howell left here on Monday he
sent to President Langley and two of
his associates a deed of trust calling
for 30000 but upon Investigation the
assets will not go over 115000
