What Other Murder Juries
lEa ye Done in New York
I TIv Icnplh tinw a jury spends in deliberating on a case after
it hn wported a disagreement sometimes
allccts the result of the
I trial A policeman named Mniterson was comi led in the Ourt ot
Heneral Swslons by a jury that had reported a disagreement The
Ourt Miti Jw jurors hack and kept them out for twenty hours longer
when they brought In a verdict of guilty The Court of Appeals set
aiJe the verdict holding that the twenty hours confinement amount
ed to coercion
I
In the first Molfnctix trial eight hours In the second trial twenty 0
five minutes was sufficient for a verdict
When Dr Samuel J Kennedy was tried for the Dolly Reynolds
murder the first jury took three hours and thirteen minutes thejec
ond six hours and thirtyfive rtiinules and the third twentytwo hours
and five minutes before they either found a verdict or disagreed
0 In the Nan Patterson cases the juries were hopelessly divided
after twentyfour hours and eleven hours and thirtyfive minutes
Here are life records of a few other cases
iJuchatun Dr 1893 twentyeight hours first degree
Hanrigan David 1S96 ilxlhours and twenty minutes acquittal
Harris Carlisle W 1892 one hour and fifteen minutes first
degree
reePa
Patrick lbert T 1002 two hours first degree
William I Werner jury out q hours lo minutes first degree

Harry Thaw took his pen in hand in the Sheriffs room of the Crim

Ijanded it to Mr Hartridge secured his approval of it and called in an
Evening World reporter Thaw said This is the only SlatenrcnrTshalt
issue today and i wish that you would nuke it pubfic IJere is the
statement
ONLY STATEMENT TODAY
1 wish the jury and every one else to understand that no one
despises a person who carries concealed weapons more than I
° Tbatonty after my life was in jeopardy as I was informed by
persons and as was communicated to nv by professional detectives i
S did I protect myself and then I
O1js employed the Pinkertons and as I
they could neither prove these attempts so I could invoke the protec
tion of tlw bv or disprove them so 1 could safely continue de
fenseless
Then doubting my judgment I consulted an exChief of Police
a manTespccted in his community and he advised me my duty was
to protect myself
I
In this trial I wished my case solely and simply based upon the
law of the State and the
upon evidence which has convinced nol
only me as I reviewed in quiet all this evidence hut also the Dis
trictAttorney that I am innocent under the written law of the
State
