I The vessel left thIs port on Sept 10
I 1 for Colon with 155 passengers On Sept
U oft Watling Island since devastated
by the hurricane Ihe ran Into the twiN
ler The day dawned dull and heavy
and toward afternoon there was a cop
per look about the iky and the ten
begin to heave In long swells Capt
Clark who had noticed the amazing
1 drop ot the barometer made all snug
I and prepared for a bad etorm He ad
mits that he did not expect It would be
M bad as 4t was Never In his experi
ence he said had he seen such a Eight
at the breaking of the tornado
Wind Row to 100 Miles an Hour
When the hurricane was In Its full
fury the waves were piled up till they
seemed to tower high above the Colons
mutheadi and It appeared Impossible
that vshe could weather them Her head
was kept up Into the furious wind as
much as possible and oil was used from
p the forward scuppers to ease her So
l did she roll that Capt Clark
ordered trysails put on the vessel to
jttwdj liw Sut the shvti of stout can
vas were ripped apart like a girls hand
h kerchief as soon as tney were bent
All through the night the gale Increased

estimates was fully 100 miles an hour
The fea lose till as the Colon wal
lowed and labored In the troughs of
the mountains of green water only
her upper works and bridge were vis
ible The combers swept along the
i decks from stem to stern and boats
were torn from davits like toys and
swept away or smashed to kindling
wood The ventilators were ripped
loose or crumpled up like paper
S Then the starboard stays of the nflot
funnel parted and the huge metal cylin
der tell with a crash narrowly roiislns
the bridge and Capt Clark The Jhlps
officers faced a terrible emergency they
f realized that If a glt wave should
I sweep over the boat deck and pour its
volume down the funnel aperture Into
thf red hot furnaces there would be nr
explosion that would annihilate thy ship
Had to Draw the Fires
rinclly It was decided to extemptfrltt
a canvas and lumber covering for the

endangered the lives of the men en >
gaged In It all the two hours her

death and they went at It with a will
Time ond again one of them would
slip only to be caught by his l11a p
In time to save him from being washed
away and all the time fumes from llu
furnaces below were pouring Into theh
faces half stifling them The fire
were finally drawn and then the wort
was easier
It would have been suicide to force th
ship through the eav that raged < c
sea anchors of lumber and extra span
were made and to these the > hip rudi
till the fury of the hurricane abated
which was not until thirtysix hour
after It arose
The news that the after water tanl

the ship got added to Capt Clark mix

great mass of metal would knock a
hole In the Colons side and send her
to Iho bottom
Two Martyrs to Duty
William Lilly an assistant engineer
and John Jnrben the ships carpenter
were sent Into the afterhold to secure
the tank It was not known then that
1 leaking water from the tank had min
gled with a lot of cyanide of potassium
In the ships cargo and formed a com
bination of deadly gases
Neither Lilly nor Jnrben reappear
and when a search was mad It
was found that the hold was full of
poisonous fumes and It was sctoial
hours before It could be ven
tilated and their bodies taken out For
tunately by this time the hurrIcane
hid almost blown Itself out and the

the huddled passengers there would
