THE first three days of racing at Belmont Park with Its personal, wrlte-your-own-record betting system, have gone a good way toward proving that It will take more than amUtuous legislation to stamp out public Interest In the sport Midweek crowd that would have been con sldered of good slzo In the old Percy Oray days have been on hand every day with llttlo in the way of racing features to attract them. Friday, for Instance, alwaya an oil day and ex pected to be more than ordinarily so preceding as It did to-day's holiday, paw some 6,000 chcerlntr und rooting at every finish. If such attendances continue the associations should easily tnako enough money to support their vast properties without resorting to an owners' fund. Racing never was conducted on a hlghtr plane than right now. The old time aurethlng operators, to whom the port was one series of gambling manipulations, are conspicuous by their absence tlies.i duyn nnd the few re maining undesirables ate being pushed out. Men of millions, who can afford to delre In the sport for sport's sake, are now racing's chief supporters. Thay' don't havn to run stables ns gambling Institutions nnd they don't run their horses to make money. Yesterday's programme, as on thi two previous days, showed tbe names 'of millionaires, several of them recent recruits to the sport, as owners of the majority of candidates. Without con sidering old time pillars of the turf like Belmont, Whitney and the Hitch cocks, the names of Alex. Smith Coch ran. Qlfford A. Cochran, C. K. O.
