The larscet commission houses arc doing tho biggest vol u mo of business In many months. It waa recently es timated that brokers' borrowings from banks were In the neighborhood of $800,000,000. Because of tho Increased publlo Participation In the market brokers' borrowings aro now estimated to be well In excess of $1,000,000,000. Some estimates place them as high as $1,250,000,000. At tho peak of the last bull boom they were estimated at $1,760,000,000. It la oxlomatlo In Wall Street that the fcubllc at largo never come In the market until a bull movement has spent much of Its force. Extensive public participation more often than not Is' seized as an opportunity by In siders who have had the foresight to purchase stocks at or near bottom prices to convert their paper profits Into casn, or. If they believe higher prices are warranted by fundamental conditions,, to shake out a laree part of tho publlo following by bringing about a severe reaction. LlBBttTi BONDS. Now that the public Is In the market acaln on a large scale. It Is particu larly interesting to note the extent of tho recent advance. If prices aro checked back to the low figures of last August, when the bull move first got under, way, It will te found that many of tho speculative leaders have more than doubled In value and that not p. few of them havo tripled in value. But even when advances are reck oned from the low levels of this year It is still found that tho market ap preciation In these stocks has been little short Of sensational. Selecting a list of the more Import ant Industrial shares at random It is found that slnca tho low of this year Studcbakef has risen Just a little less than 26 points; American Ice, 26 points; Amorican Sugar, 19 points; Adams Express, 17 points; Bears Roe buck, 12 points; Laclede Gas, 20 points; Consolidated Gas, 23 points; Kelsey Wheel, 28 points; Chandler Motors, 26 points, or more than 50 per cent.; Jewel Tea has doubled In value. Gcnoral Electric has risen 20 points, Cuban-American Sugar 10 points, or nearly double In value; Burns Bros. H2E THE EVENING WORLDS 3FRVICE COLUMN. By Capt. Robt Scofield Wood. (O. F. C, M. C, Croix de Guerre with four palmsi formerly Command tr 167th Squadron, Royal Air Force.) WHO'8 WHO IN RADIOLAND. In(y for the past year tee have been informed through different mediums of the rapid growth of radio and of Ut ever-tnereating popular!!), bat the men who have mode possible if rapid prowtft are practically unknown fo tho great radio puMio. Evervbody want fo knoto aoout the people Dr.Mnd the leenee. Is evidenced in oilr mail daily by re quests from reader tetkinp formation concerning leading personage in the radio field. A series of article have been arranged for the purpose of inlrs ducing to livening World readers IAe "rarfloiifcs" trno have made potalole radio a we understand it. O.SMITH. A much different situation exists In the case of railroad stocks, and for that matter tho copper shares, al though there has been distinct Im provement In the latter Industry ana although the railroad outlook In the minds of most competent railroad men Is better than at any time during the last decade. Gotna; back over the records, It is found that Atchison had advanced only 6 points over the low of the year, Baltimore & Ohio 3 points, Union Pacific 9 points, Southern Pa cific 8,. Illinois Central 4, Pennsyl vania 4, and other leading rails from 3 to around 6 or 7 points. The only stocks In this group that have been able to keep pace with tho Industrials have been New York Central and Canadian Pacific. The former has risen 16 points and the latter 17 points. Because the railroads and the cop pers have been so backward and be cause their outlook Is so improved, many of the largest and shrewdest op erators In tho Street are switching their commitments from tho Indus trials into these shares. The head of one of the biggest com mission houses In the Btrect. says: "I havo been advising my customers, who are getting actively Interested In the market for the first time in two years or more, not to touch Industrial stocks at this level. But advice to buy rails and coppers seems to be disregarded. It has been tho per pendicular advance In tho industrials that has attracted them to the mar ket. Now that they aro trading again they want action. They seo a chance to make an caay killing. They re gard rails and coppers as too slug gish, and as not offering the oppor tunities of making a quick turn. "What I am afraid of Is that while these new customers are endeavoring to make their quick turn in itho vitriolic industrials there will bo a shake out which will be so damaging to their margin account, and will so seriously shake their new round con fidence that they will again withdraw from tho market for a protracted period and commission business will again take a slump." Smith, conceded ty all to be the moat progressive ama teur radio fan in the world. To Smith, familiarly known as C. W belongs the credit of tho nrst successful amateur continuous wave operations carried out in the united States, tie waa the oral cf the big operators to change his famous 2 ZL station from spark to con tinuous wave. Smith was born and educated In New Jersey, and for a while tried hi hand at newspaper work on various local pub lications. From childhood he displayed a lively Interest In electricity, and often forgot to get to school because of his interest In the operations of some tele phone linemen at work along the roads bounding the Jersey meadows. While working on the New York Evening Sun and devouring all the available liter ature that he could beg, borrow or steal on the subject of electricity and wireless telternphy, a popular magazine pub' Halted an Article on the possibilities ot war with Japan In which the work ings of wireless on board of the enemies ships on their way to attack the Paclflo Coast was vividly portrayod. This crystallized young Smith Into action, and he quit his Job as a scribe anu took up wireless. This was In 1907 and the following year he erected his first aerial on the roof of his home In West 65lh Street New York City, where his friends lis tened with considerable amazement to the few signals in the air of tho then seldom heard continental Morae code used by all foreign ships. In 1910 Smith moved to Bayonne, N. J., where he erected two 125 foot masts with 24 foot spreaders and for several years thereafter conducted experiments for tho United Wireless Telegraph Com pany. The call of this old station (WD) will probably be remembered by all old time "Hams." There were very few amateurs in those days, but the two or three who were located in Bayonne or Jersey City were regularly communicated with by WD on a f.mall one half Kw set, and It was In connection with this set that the nrst rotary (Dark -aD ever em ployed In amateur operation was put into use. it waa made of an old pno nograph record, with terminals of dry batteries Inserted at regular Intervals, and the disk being clnmped on a fan motor from which the blade had been removed. There were no radio laws In those days and practically no restric tions. Tho amateurs assigned their own call letters, worked on whatever wavq length they happened to strike. They used any amount of power they felt like uslntr and let commercial utatlons send whenever they, tho amateurs, did not feel like working. It will be recalled that tho present radio laws went Into effect on Aug. 13, 1913. On this particular dny certain revolutionary changes took placo In tho regulations concerning all classes of ata tlona. The most Important one being that three-letter calls were assigned for the first time to ship and ohore stations. Smith at this tlma was doing vacation relief work as a tadlo operator at tho Cape Hatteras, N. C, station. On the morning ot tho day In question the steamship Savannah, call letter VII. was off tho tapes, and a lot of traffic was being exchanged between the Hatlerao station and the snip. The shlp'a end of the wireless communica tion was being handled by no less n personage than John Grlnan, owner ot Old 3 P.M." Grlnan was taking u summer vaca tion and was enjoying the scenery of the Savannah's wireless cabin and the work Incident thereto, nnd displacing the shlp'a regular operator. Accbrdlng to the Instructions Issuod the call let ters of the Savannah ware changed to KFK at 12.01 P. M. Slora traffic hav ing been received after 12 P. M. Smith endeavored to raise tho Savannah again but was unsuccessful. Repeated unsuccessful calls to the ship using the three-letter call with no response started a scare which resulted In news paper headlines heralding a disaster to the Savannah. Along toward evening tho name ot the ship was spelled out on the air as a last resort, and Grlnan at the ship's key Immediately came back in a ohcerful tone and wanted to know what was the matter and why the ship's call had not been used. Words will never be coined which would adequately express Smith's feelings to ward John Grlnan at that moment, but fortunately Qrlnan was several hun dred miles removed at that time so n Is still alive and kloklng. (Wo will tell you all about John In a latter article.! Smith moved to Long Lslnnd and In 1113 started the operation of a set whoij call 2LK became famous throughout the eastern part of the United States. The work accomplished with this general amateur station war ranted the issuance of a special license to Smith, and It was from 1314 that the story of the now world famous station 2 Z L really began.
