Correspondence of the Albany Evening Journal. Lo.N-pr.N, July 14, l?i This sgreat Metropolis has been strangely i ii/zned, in regard to its climate, or we have b strangely fortunate in our visit; for insteat the smoke, vapors, fog3 and rains, which we 1 been taught to dread, we have enjoyed a gei ?atmosphere, a bright sun, with occasioual but freshing showers, for five successive days. London, like the Cataract of Niagara, is c stantly growing upon the wonder and admir?t of strangers. I am just beginning to be c scious of the impossibility of comprehending wealth, its magnitude and its magnificence Ride for hours, in whatever direction you plci and the same evidences of golden conquests presented. All the nations of the earth m have been paying tribute, for centuries, to L don, or these untold and incomputable mill! ' could not have been concentratod here. I was wondering this morning how mi " Provant" was required to furnish this army people with rations. An inquiry shows t ],51)0,000 quarters (eight bushels; of wheat required annually to supply London with lire; that 120,000 tons of fish are caught here which 45,000 tons arc fresh salmon,) annuall the annual consumption of butter is estimated 40,000,000 lbs., and the price varies from Is. Is. Gd., or from two to three shillings our ci icncy. Of meats I can get no estimate, I there is brought annually to Smithfield-Marl alone, 180,000 oxen, 450,000 hogs or pigs, 1,35 00? sheep or lambs, and 25,000 calves : of mi it is said that 11,000 cows supply the metropc with 8,030,000 gallons annually, at an avera price of Is. lOd. per eight, quarts. Eggs arc sr here in great quantities, in crates, by water, fn Ireland, Belgium, Holland and France, and st sometimes as low as 8d. per dozen, but genera from Is. to Is. Gd. Hogs arc fatted here in l yards of breweries and distilleries, for while eve thing of the grain kind is called " corn," th product is not grown here. Hams sell at 7_? shoulders at Gd., and smoked side pork at 5d., j the retail stalls and shops. This is just doub the price with us. Every body drinks Brer in England. I ha*, astonished waiters, in two or three instances, b asking for water. When you scat yourself * table in a " Coffee Room" or " Steak-House" ft dinner, and have ordered your "joint" or " steak, or '? chop," the waiter inquires, " Hale, porte or stout, sir ?" If in place of either of thes national beverages, you reply water, he eithi laughs in your face or turns away wonderin where such a wild chap could have been caugh Now that I have seen something of Engli. habits, I am astonished that Miss .Martinea should have deemed the circumstance that tw or three American women with whom she mc were " not all for love, but a little for the bottle, worthy of remark. The drinking of Aale, porte and Btout, is universal here, with the females < the poorer classes, when they can get it, and wit those of the better classes of mechanics, female people and shop-keepers. While at dinner t Birmingham, it was observed by all of us, th. the ladies (a dozen) at table, drank porter as they were thirsty, and as if it did them good. The lady opposite to me, who was well dresse and well educated, disposed of nearly an entir bottle. You meet ladies at every turn of th streets ?n London, " iJie rubric of whose face shows the shrines at which they kneel." I hav met ladies at Exhibition Rooms, whose fier}' face entitled them to the distinction of being classc< with Shakspearc's " knights of the burninj lamp." And you find every side-walk blocke up with lusty ladies, who are indebted for thei rubicund faces and rotund persons, to habitue beer drinking. I yesterday sat in an omnibi: with an old lady and gentleman, evidently of th wealthy class, the latter of whom was a victii to gout, while the former displayed a face au nose, the maintenance of which had cost as muc as FalstafT paid for " sack" to keep Bardolph' salamander in fire. We went last night to the Adelphi Theatre, whet the leading attraction was *" Tito Wizzard of th North," whose wonder-working powers of magic if we may believe the show-bills, have procure for him a command to repair to Si. Petersburg to exhibit before the Emperor Nicholas. Thi man is indeed a ' wizzard.* The delusions prac tised east Monsieur Aillent, Signor Blitz, and a] other magicians into deep shade. Let me aston ish you with a few sp?cimens. He came int. the boxes und obtained a five pound note fron one gentleman, and asked another (any one wh? chose) to write a sentence upon a slip of paper The note and paper were foliled so that the wizzari could not see either the number of the formero the sentence upon the other, and then laid upoi a plate, set fire to by a taper, consumed, and th? ashes blown about the stage. The wizzard the; announced the number of tlie Bank Note, re peated the sentence on the t*l:p of paper, and i page, returned these articles to the owners in ; box which the wizzard had.not touched. Hi then handed a box to a gentleman nearest tin ??tage, and requested him to deposite any articl? he chose in it, and to pass it around for simila: deposits by ladies and gentlemen promiscuously he standing upon the stage. When the deposit had been made, he requested that the box shoul? be placed where he could see it, with the li? down, and standing at least sixty feet from it, hi named every article which it contained. He re quested ladies and gentlemen to loan him the i handkerchiefs, which were thrown to him fron all parts of the theatre. When collected ant counted, to the number of I 7. they were placee in a large ewer, into which a servant poured : large bucket of water. Having been thoroughh sat tira ted, the handkerchiefs were rinsed am wrung, and then spread, one by one, into anothei vessel, upon* each one of which some blazing ma jrical elixir was poured ; and within five minute: the handkerchiefs were placed upon a salver and returned to the owners washed, dried, ironed, folded and perfumed ! And all this was done openly, without turning away from the audience, and without anv of the lumbering accompani? ments of ordinary jugglery. We devoted the morning to the pursuit of what is classic ground to Americans, and what had for me the additional interest of professional associa? tions. We found, at No. 34 Lincoln's Inn Fields, the building occupied eighty years ago, 1 believe, by Mr. Watts (1 have no'books to refer to.) and with whom Benjamin Franklin worked as a Journeyman Printer. It is now occupied for ofliees of various descriptions, b\* persons too busy to know or care who was their predecessor. "We then started for Dukc-street, where the Jour? neyman Printer from America boarded, and re? membering that it was near a Chapel, I stepped into a small Book and Stationer's shop directly opposite a Chapel, to inquire if the occupant could direct me to Dr. Franklin's Boarcling house, when I had the satisfaction of learning {?ft* l Iwd crossed, th? threshold ?and stood under the roof that sheltered the illustrious Ame Statesman, Patriot, Philosopher and Philai pist. He boarded with an old widow lac much intelligence, and occupied an upper in the back part of the buildin?f. The Ian. j of Dr. Franklin and a lady still older, who 1 I room in the same house, were very devout G ! lies. This happens to be the character o ? present occupants of this house. I oI?en i young man " reading proof," and remarked ' I was glad to find a brother Type under th ? cient roof of the great master of our art. i Bookseller replied, "As you are an Amcncar ! I may sav to you that we are trying to cam ! Dr. Frankun;s principles in another respe ; Wc are now re-printin? an American work ; tied " Ireland Vindicated,'' and we are sta ?' -4 Repealers." I informed him lhat I was j Mr. O'Connfll when the Trades of D ; passed his house and on the stage at Donnyb: ! Green. This led to many inquiries about land, and an invitation to attend a Repeal } ing in -hat street at S o'clock on Sunday eve: I intended to have gone from this spot Ihr the Mammoth Brewery Moils': of Messrs. clay & Perkins, but there was so much d: ness and humidity in its capacious vaults, w j were not likely to alleviate the a-zuc in my that I concluded to content myself with an i rior view of an establishment which covers teen acres ia the heart of the city of Londo I Well might Dr. Johnson have exclaimed,, a ! did. when (as the Executor of Mr. Tor all. j founder of the establishment,, he played the - | tioneer:?"We do not offer you, gentlei , those empty beer butts and barrels merely? are the potentialities for acquiring wealth be? the dreams of avarice." Setenar, July We repaired at 11 o'clock this morning tc ! Foundling Hospital in Guiiford-at.,a noble ed 1 founded in 1739, for the reception and main j anee of exposed and deserted children. The ! stitution has been liberally endowed by bequ j and receives constant and handsome donati I The Foundlings, to the number of 3*20, of 1 j sexes, were seated in the gallery of the chape j neat uniform dresses, the boys with mixed roi ?bouts and trowsers and scarlet vests, and the ? with pretty while aprons and caps. They fon a part of the choir in the chaunts and chon; The chapel was filled with a female voice, ? solos, so clear, ricii and melodious that sere I would have listened with admiration. The ; vice was read by a dull man with a husky v? j and a sluggish manner. This, however, | atoned for in a Sermon from Arch. Deacon I. j iNSON, replete with knowledge, abounding in pi ! and eloquent and fervently delivered. The c ? n-regation was lar^'e and highly respectable. | ter the service was over (it consumed nearly ? ? hours) the foundlings were marched to the dini j hall, where, after a blessing was asked by nm the oldest boys, they sat down to a bountiful i past of roast beef and pol atoes, without bre I The whole scene brought vividly to mind most interesting exhibitions of the inmates of own Orphan Asylum, where, if there be less munificence and ostentation, the same benign s blessed spirit of charity reigns. There are seve valuable paintings in this hospital, the most tractive of which is that of the ?Saviour's reci tion of little children, by Benjamin West. T organ was presented to the hospital by Hanoki M on da r, July IT I have been through the Thames Tunnel. Ti is to London what the Crot?n Water Works ; to New-York, the great achievement of the 1? century. There is nothing at either entrance the Tunnel, which indicates that you are in the cinity of this extraordinary improvement. V passed over it in a steamer in the morning, wil out being aware that other masses of fellow-1 ings were quietly walking through a subtcrranc passage below us ! The visitor is directed ?? Tl way to the Tunnel IT " by a board on the corn of a street. You descend a winding ??tone sta way 100 steps, and enter into the Tunnel, win is well lighted with gas, and afforded us a co pleasant walk, after four hour's exposure to t sun. The Tunnel has two avenues, each wi enough to allow 12 or 16 persons to walk abreai Half way through, a printing press is station " By Royal Authority," which is throwing ( sheets containing an account of the Tunnel, told the man I would purchase two of his shee provided he would allow me to ?.' pull " them m self. This, upon learning that 4' I knows tl ropes," as they say at sea, he consented to. have, therefore, an account of the Thames Tu iicl, printed by myself, standing midway bctwe? | the London and Surry sides of the river, seven | feet below its bed, with steamers and ships pat j ing directly over my head ! The Tunnel is two miles below London Bridg | where another bridge, which was much wante i would have proved seriously injurious to the ii mense commerce of the metropolis. In 1 Sr2 after the failure and abandonment of several plai for tunneling the Thames, one was submitted 1 Mr. (now Sir J. M.) Brunel, which received tl confidence of capitalists, and in 16*2?! he coi j menced his operations. But he encountered dill j eulties and obstacles, for years, at every steji i | his progress, that would have disheartened ai appalled any man but one whom the emergent: iiad produced to accomplish this mighty ente prise. Quicksand beds were among the mo troublesome and perilous obstacles met with. Tl top of flic tunnel's arch, about the middle of tl river, approaches within ten feet of the bottom < the river. Four times, during its progress tl tunnel and shafts were filled with water, and tl 1 irruption of 16*27 threatened to destroy the ente prise, but by the most incredible efforts, all wi j overcome by its indomitable architect, and i 1635, seven years afterwards, Sir J. M. Brunt was enabled to resume the work. The progress of this great work was nec.'ssaril very slow. Sometimes, with favorable excava | tions, two feet would be accomplished in twentx : four hours, working as they did. with chancos c | hands, day and night ; where the excavation wa j difficult, only two feet would be done in a week : and for the bast three months, so great was th j labor and so formidable the obstructions, tha j only three feet and four inches' progress wa: I made! Iu August, 1641, fifteen wars' after th | ground was broken on the London side of th j Thames, Sir J, M. Brunei descended a ahai \ from the Wapping side and passed through ; ! small '? drift-way through the shield in the Tun j ncl.*' Less than two years thereafter, in March ; 1843, the magnificent work was completed [ The whole expense of construction is estimatet at 614.000 pounds sterling. The toll is only ? j penny for passing through the Tunnel, und bu j for '* the getting up stairs" it would pay well ! Until passengers are let down and taken up by ai | engine, it will not take foot passengers from th? ? bridges. The son of Sir J. M. Brunei, whose life was ir such eminent danger from swallowing a liai crown piece, was, with three workmen, caughl by one of the iubreaks of water and carried hv the rushing column through the Tunnel to the shaft and up to die surface where he was rescued The three men who were with him perished. Oc the first passage of the steamer Great Western .rom London to Bristol, he also met with an rtc cident which it was supposed would result fatally? but from which he recovered. The fine weather affords a prospect of good crops, though the spring, as with us, was 'cold .tnd backward. | ^v^\A ?.MORNING BOAT FOR PEEKS ?Jjj?v^SPsJr?:iLL. Verralanck.
