The gub-Tr.asury ?H-iie, The following ib the concluding declaration o? the Resolutions adopted by the Van Buren meet? ing in the Park : '?Xevw-abandoaing an honest ?asue.-brcaase when first pre-nrted, the public mind _*_ not be prepared for it, w asaio present it, determined ih.-.t it sLv! _linterw -.?? ? in th. est-blished policy of ?lie country. - e go tot the we???-* Md its ottfJ-ir, rhe (_"*( w?d ?ie man, the Independan Treasury tad Hartin Van Burcn. We are heartily rejoiced to sec this issue pre Bented. If there was ever a measure of nation:-.! policy -tumped with the veto of public opinion. _nd utterly rejected by the constitutional voter* of the Union, it is this identical scheme oJ "Martin Van Buren for the establishment of an ' Independent Treasury'--?independent only in being absolute!-.- dependent upon the Executive will. It is th- only political measure which Van Burcn ever attempted to originate, and the fate it encountered was not such as greatly to en .oiuv.r?- its ambitious author in devising neu schemes of national policy. It was thoroughly and universally discussed in 1840; the argu? ments o: its most able champions, the approving and commund ng nod J'rom the Hermitage, th< whole power of the Executive department and of the party drill were marshaled to it? support : and yet it was scouted by an immense majority ofthe American people. The only special favor we have to ask of the Loco-Focos is. that they will force it, in appropriate connection with their Fret Trade absurdities, to another public judgement. We venturo to predict that it will prove their last experiment upon the popular ignorance. But it should be distinctly borne in mind that, even if they choose, the Loco-Focos cannot repu d?ate the ?Sub-Treasury scheme. They have noi even as plausible an opportunity for playing at fast and loose upon it as they have upon the Ta. riff. On the question of Protection, Van Burci. has never avowed an open, straightforward, man? ly and consistent opinion. The chief aim of Jn. whole jKjliticul life, so lar as this question is eon cerned, has been to diverge as continually and _? far as possible, J'rom a straight line. The most crooked stream in the universe never meandereo hulf eo windingly or half ??o gracefully as have Van Burt-ii_ opinions on the subject of Protection To the North he is for it?to the South against \ t ?to the West he is both. The Syracuse Con? vention judiciously rcsolccs in favor of a ' revenut Tarif* judiciously Protective.' Van Buren doe*? i not heBitato to avow to Virginia, through Ritchie, that he is ' uncompromising in his hos.ility to tht Protective principle* In his Indiana letter the wisest men of his own party do nol pro'ess an ability e?en to guess what is the meaning he in? tends to convey. Like a paper kite, hi long as he keeps ?n the eye of the gale?and while this blows gently ant! steadily in one direction?br ri-?s t*n^ rides with the perfection of grace. Hut this/o.*'i,? a whirlwind?a sweeping blest from every quarter of the compass?would puzzle Ja. nu3 himself, though, in truth, v;c think the p-ipil i the better master. But on the Sub-Treasury scheme there i.? no such chance for dodging and skulking. The firs; blows the ambitious political eoidier ever struck were upon the lifeless carcase of the ' . loneter,' which his master had killed. His pasteboard weapons were flourishtd with most promising chivalry, and, as a certificate of fealty, he inher? ited the weapon with which Jackson had slain the B:mk. He considers himself, therefore, a miniature edition of the Bank destroyer. His party has succeeded in subverting the National J_6?t_tion, beneath which we enjoyed for many years tl-> best currency any country ever possess? ed, which furnished the safest depositorv for the public money the wisdom of man has ever devised and which proved, during all the years of its ex? istence, a source of greater national blessings, mth fewer practical errors, than any institution cf .qual magnitude- ever known. In this destruc? tion he claims a far greater ag?ney than he ever had. He is committed against it and irrevocably -nt favor of its antagonist, tiie Sub-Treasury Scheme. He devised it, argued it in messages and letters without number, forced it upon (.'on. gross in repeated opposition to the popular will, made it the platform for the Loco-Foco party in 18 .U, signed the bill creating it and stakct^pon its success his whole political fortunes now and forever. He has been utterly crushed beneath the popular detestation of his financial bantling. And with a firm reliance on the depth, the intel? ligence, and the abiding strength of this hostility of the American people to the principles involved in this Sub-Treasury scheme, the Whig party may well defy him ever to riso. Let him rest in peace, for no retntrgam give?? hope from his tomb. We are glad to sec that the Loco-Focos them? selves perceive and acknowledge the utter im? possibility of repudiating the responsibility thev at first assumed. They cannot deny the neces? sity of sotne system for the ?ale-keeping of the public moneys. They have destroyed the Na? tional Bank, denounced the Pet Bank System? both of which they created and fostered?and pledged themselves to the plan of committing the public money to individual agents under the con? trol of the Executive power. We are hcartilv rejoiced that they maintain their ground. _j" The Evening Post reads a very sensible and well-timed lecture on the practice of political journals, to magnify or disparage the numbers at? tendant upon political meetings. There is much ground for its censures, but none whatever for aiming them especially, and confining them en? tirely, to the American The Post may find a Jar more apposite example in its kinsman the P..* heian : for that print did hesitate to declare plumply that -5,00. persons attended the Van Buren meeting-in the Park. Now nobody couid be decoived by this except those who were not there; but as this class comprehended by far the largest part of creation, the Plebeian stood a fair chance of being believed in some quarters of tiie universe?though not much here, wc admit. But the P'->t shcul-l begin its lectures nearer home. In this particular ?...tance, taking into considera tior. the gig_ntic effort-? of the party to assemble a Idige concourse, the immense number of names afiixed to the call, the spirit with which State and Ctty oi-.-*C-olders e itered into the matter, and the unbounded ooasts of the Loco-Focos, we deem the American's statement, that tne meeting was a faitur; not ?i amias. rotad. . . ?- S i,'.-10,-14 S'J?,U4j, blb Total decrease.? - ? .$11,?5,340 >*-__?3*___aS-j*' The City Finance.. She chose l?)r he; first piece the air of Queen Elizabeth oi' Englant in the Opera of Donizetti, " Robert d'Ecereux"? " L1Amor sun mi f? beata.'''' We will end.avo: to express impartially the opinion of the majority of persons present, who were principally artist: and intelligent amateurs. ?ilrs. Sutton did ?o consider certainly who the person \v;;s ?he rcpre sented, or if she did consider, she took her for th? simple mistress of Robert, who hesitates believim that iier lover can be faithless to her. In conse quencc of her error, she sang the piece like a men mistress, and not like the great Queen of England the virago Lii/abeth, who suffers no rivals, anc ; who never descended to the light coquctric: ' attributed to her on Monday evening in thi? piece. We mum say that she made no well bound (legati) tones; all the passage, that re quired flexibility and shakes tverc of the inferi? She breathed also out o place, und ?\??o? ?=ome little notes which we con demn?not because they are not written, bu fx-cuusc they are not in good taste. The tint recitative of the scene oi' Lucia, as well as th< _ ; air which followed, were given in bad taste, anc i not at all in the manner of Bordogni, whose stvk ? b''.. pretends to follow. Of the three singers wht . have lately sung the Casta Diva?Mrs. Sutton ?nd S i ?inora Castellan, and Corsini, we woulc say that the first was inferior, and the last,?nol ? on the first, but the second night ?he sang al Niblo's in 'Norma'?superior to the others.
