ODE.By H. T. Tuckermax. W-ittea for tlx Ani.iv?*T?nrv of the American Ii.stitute. When Hum:in Thought, inspired by Lore, Through Nature's deep arcana flies, A holy sanction from above With glory crowns the high emprize, Creation thus benignly yields To man her laws and treasures still? The heaving main, the starry fields Are vassals of his earnest will. Then is redeemed Earth's weary lot, Exalted Labor'? manly heart, And Toil's long bitterness forgot, In triumphs of immortal Art! Her summons from the quarry's bed, Calls up the Statue's form sublime, Or bids the Press exulting spread Truth's sacred light through every clime. O'er Matter's vast and wild domain, The conquests of the dauntless Mind Have felt red Passion's lawless reign, And all Life's dements refined. Blest Science! let thy sceptre wave, A wand of peace o'er land and sea, To "uard new laurels for the brave, And set the world's pule bondmen free ! The hues of flowers that bloom to die, The boundless riches of the mine, The fickle breezes of the sky, And gems that pave the deep, uro thine! Thou dost the river boldly guide For leagues, beneath rock, vale and mount, From its calm birth-place turned aside, To gush?a city's sparkling fount! Thou canst transform the vapory cloud To wings that air and ocean cleave, And from an insect's fragile shroud, The robe for peerless Beauty weave! The course, while yet enslaved to kings, The monuments of old proclaim ; To-day, a nobler harvest brings? Art's trophies won in Freedom's name ! Mexico?Sandwich Islands.?By tho arrival of tho schooner Juanita at New-Orleans from Vera Cruz, files of papers have been received to the 2d lost. They communicate the important intelligence that legitimate authority had been re? established in the Sandwich Islands. This event occurred soon after the arrival at Honololu, on the 26th of July last, of H. B. M. ship Dublin, Admiral Thomas, who immediately annulled every thing that Lord Paulet had done?estab? lished the authority of King Kamehameha III.? On the 31st of July the Hawaian flag was dis? played, and was saluted with 21 guns by the forts of Honololu, and by the Dublin, Carysfort and Hay ward,an well as the American frigate Constel? lation ; this measure having been consummated on that day, by articles of agreement between Her Majesty and King Kamehameha III. under the respective seals of the signers. Tho Hazard, British man-of-war, arrived at San Bias from the Sandwich Islands on the 9th, j with despatches from Admiral Thomas, bringing J the important intelligence of the islands being de? livery up, on the 31st July, to their native King ; but they were, unfortunately, a day too late to be forwarded by the Great Western. The Hazard brought a report of tilings being again unsettled in China, and that the British force was to be sent from Hong Kong to the Northward. Not authentic. At a magnificent ball given at the Presidential Palace in Mexico, on the 22d ult. in celebration of tho Anniversary of the Victory of Tampico over the Spaniards. Among the trophies was an English flag which had been taken from the Tex ians. The British Charge d'Affaires who was present at tho ball, became indignant at beholding the British standard in the midst of these eviden? ces of Mexican triumphs; and insisted upon its . being removed. His request not beiug immedi? ately complied with, he left the ball-room, followed by every Englishman present. We hope, says the Courrier Francois, that this incident, which, doubtless arose from Borne mis? take, will not be attended by any serious conse? quences. In Mexico, the elections thus far for Congress have resulted somewhat unfavorably to Santa Ana. There are three candidates for the Presi? dency, viz: Francisco Elorh'ga, Juan Ignacio Godoy, and Manuel Rineore. Whether they will run in opposition to. Santa Ana, wo do not learn. The various conductas sent from Mexico and and San Louis Potosi to Vera Cruz and Santa Ana de Tamaulipas, ia, by a decree of tho Presi? dent, positively fixed, without any delay whatev? er, for every fourth month, that is, on the first of January, first of March, and first of September. By another decree, all sums of money sent from the interior to tho different ports in Mexico, are subjected to duties of circulation and importa? tion, whether destined to leave the country or not. This decree virtually abolishes a former or? dinance prescribing a fixed duty of lour per cent, on the circulation, and six per cent, on the ex? portation of money. General Santa Ana was reported ill of the in? fluenza, or grippe, on tho 16th ult. The Sieglo contradicts the rumor of lite decease of General Paredes. From the Rochester Daily Democrat. Thb Famous Copper Rock.?Tho scientific reader is familiar with the history of the famous Copper Rock of Lake Superior. It is a vast mass of solid copper, weighing not less than 6000 lbs. and was discovered, many years since, lying in the bed of the OcUnagon River, entirely isolated. The spot where it has rested, probably for ages, is some twenty miles from the Lake. "The river is navigable for a flat about ten miles, and it has heretofore been deemed impossible to transport the vast mass from the sjxit where it was discov ercd to the point where it could be shipped; but some two years ago a plan was adopted by which it was hoped its removal could be effected, Mr. Asher?lor many years a resident at Sault St. Marie, a fat, jolly Indian trader, and a true Whig?while representing his constituents in the Legislature of Michigan, informed us of his plan, and we perceive that, in company with Mr. El dred, an enterprising merchant of Detroit, he has put the plan into execution. For the purpose ol transporting the mass to navigable water, a huge car, placed upon a moveablo railroad, was bukt, and by patient labor it was gradually advanced, until it reached deep water, where it was placed on a flat, and easily floated down to the lake shore. These gentlemen designed to ship it to New York. Had they succeeded, it would have been a fortune to them as a mere curiosity. But gov? ernment interfered! Although they had purcha? sed the rock from the Indians in whose territory it was found, the government agent claimed its possession?denying the power of the Indians to dispose of it. As this claim was not set up until the great la? bor of transporting it to the shore of the lake was effected, the agent offered to fully compensate the enterprising gentlemen by whom it had bocn re? moved, for their trouble. This was hard, but there was no alternative. They had to quietly submit, and see the fruit of their labors borne oil by the government agent to tire Sault, whence it has been shipped on board of a revenue cutter. It will be immediately forwarded to Washing? ton, and be placed in the National institute, where it will remain for all coming time, we hope, as one of the greatest curiosities of the age. The Indians have revealor] to Mr. Ashman where anothcrrock, but not of equal weight, may be found. It had been discovered ages before, and hid?its location being kept a profound secret until civilization had dissipated the superstition connected with it. Whether Mr. A., after this interference of government, will reveal his know? ledge of it, is doubtful. rvj, a;j_] owe it to the affi cted to inform too uiat in S?$?l 4a, aSacked, by a very "olen^cold, caused hy orking in the water, which ^W^^JSSd sides acd ...a k? a ????? o-vere i?ain m my r>rea?t a.ia siu?, a..o DR- WISTAR'S B&t&AM OF WILD CHERRY. 133 Fulton-Street. AND MEDICATED EOZEJVOES! PETERS' VEGETABLE PILLS have now b-.n in wv lal us- more than ten years, and the public, taught thair value by experience of their wonderful curative properties, have accorded to them a celebnty unparalleled in the history of medical science in this or any other country.? Testimonials of cures from .-very quarter of the Union, and from individuals inevery condition of life, are their creden? tials, and unless thousands of respectable m*ii have volun? tarily entered into a conspiracy to deceive their fellow citi? zens, these preparations act upon the human system in a man? ner little short of miraculous. We are told by a certain class of empiric*, who utider stand nothing of the functions of the vital organs, and are ignorant, probably, of their relative positions, thar medicine acts immediately.upon the blood: as if it could pass into the veins without the necessary digestive process which all digestible matter which enters into the stomach must undergo PETERS' VEGETABLE PILLS and CATHARTIC LOZENGES do indeed PURIFY THE BLOOD, but it is by purifying the chyle, bile, and all other fluids from which blood ii generated. In all cases of dyspepsja, cholicjaundice, flatulence, heart-burni diseases peculiai to females, diarrhoea? in short, in all complaints or affections of the stomach, liver or intestines, they will effect a cure whkn all other medi? cines have kail i.d. Of this we have ample proofs to ex? hibit to all who wish to investierte, them. PETERS' COUGH LOZENGES; by their superior efficacy, have distanced all competition. 'I he aggregate of all the cough nostrums sol : in :he country does not equal the sale of this single preparation. All pulmonary complaints that are not beyond the reach of remedy, yield to Peters' Cough Lozenges. PETERS' WORM LOZENGES are found such an in fallible cure for wonns, that Parents flock from far and near to pbt tin them foi their suffering offspring,. These Lozenges, although they destroy and expel worms with electric rapidity, may be taken with perfect satetv by the most delicate infant. The wonderful properties of PETERS' VEGETABLE PLASTERS, in curing the rheumatism, strengthening the back, removing pains fiona the leiux, side and bieast, are the consraiit theme of all who have tried them. THE HON. MARTIN VAN BUREN, Ex-President of the C'uited States, with a host of .Members of Congress, many of the Foreign Ministers, and hundreds of Clergymen and Physicians, are among, the warm advocate* and constant pro ions of the above inestimable preparations. That renu-dy is ' Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup.' Is has succeeded in cases where, every thing else ins failed, and it will generally succeed in curing every caseofConsump? tion where the following things are attended to, viz : a fair trial, perseverance, and a strict conformity to the directions. In order that this may not be considered mere asseition, u? supported by facts, the reader is referred to a pamphlet, pub? lished bv die proprietor, which can be obtained gratis :'t nnv of his offices, in which"can be found a nurabei of cases substantiating the truth of tltis assertion. Also, may be seen at his office anumber of certificates which have never yet been published, where individuals have been cured of Consumption after having been giveu up by their Physician and friends. It may not be amiss to state the reason of the ?reat success of the Pulmonic Syrup. It is the most powerful purifier of the sw rem known ; it operates by assistiuguature to expel tlie disease from the Luusjs, Stomach and Liver. Where there is hectic fever, night sweats, constiiiation, all usual symptoms of Con? sumption, the use of the Syrup removes the fever si , s tin night sweats, and regulates the action of Me- bowels, making them healthy and natural. It soothes a' d ripens the dise.is ? of the Luhes, and then expels it in the form of expectorated matter; and it is truly astonishing what quantities of corrup? tion i? expectorated bv patients generally, w ho have taken the Pulmonic Syrup; and this continues until all disease of the Luuns is removed, and the patient finds to his joy that he is restored to health.
