To the Editor of The Tribune: A letter in your paper of the Mh iu?L dated at Poiitiac, January 22, evince? so much of an improper and reprehensible spirit, and is so well calculate?! to defeat the very purpose it was probably designed to accomplish by the writer, that it is a matter of some doubt whether a reply is not hu unnecessary consumption of the space allotted to it inyour paper The writer hails from a distant residence, and ?t w,.ul,I not be mir to pre?*ome that he r?silies in New York, for that would imply a deception that one of hie profeased integrity would uot be guilt* of?it would serve 10 Uirow a shade of suspicion over hi? honesty of purpose throughout bis ;ei;i-r. Then ii might give force to the presumption that hi.s disinterestedness is cloven footed, ami thai be mi'.-ht have an interest in the Cuba mines, or that he soueht to depress Copper Stocks that he might avail him mir of the depression to secure an iuterest ?a them ami fill hi.s own pockets. It certainly requires an effort to exercise an abundance of charily toward a ?nan who denonncas an enterprise so national arid so interesting in its character and which has already secured the confidence and the endorsement ot some ?4' the most Bagacious, shrewd and sound men in the Nation. One moat attribut?! to him either a want of commun judgment or common honesty. The existence of great mineral wealth in the Cop? per Mines ot Lake Superior is now established be yond all doubt. The Government has, for several years ba?-k. appointed her Agents at no small cx pense, and Congress are now turning their atten? tion to it to secure the titles of the miner's lands. The Government certainly anadies some impor? tance to this subject. Eminent Geologists unite in their testimony in it* favor; and of the thousand?. who for the two lasi seasons have visited the mines, all seem to he of but one opinion. It is too late in the day, either foj: honest scepticism, or for the af fectstionof it for sinister?purposes. Neither scoffs nor sneers can retard ihc enterprise. Public atten? tion is aroused to thai preai treasury of Copper wealth, and no misrepresentation can prevent or de? feat ilh full ami ttuccessful development The cop? per riches of Lake Superior is a subject of great National interest It must increase the National wealth, and the benefits which it will confer upon the Nation rise far above the mere question of cup? per stocks ami the narrow and selfish interest?) of .my one. who would make his own private interest th?-standard by which any great public good is to be measured. The suspicion ol a sinister motive is confirme,1, not only by his wholesale denunciation of the enter? prise, and the men engaged in it, but as if no one connected with it should escape. Dr. Jackson, a gen? tleman certainly ,?f high probity of character ami justly distinguished in his profession ami deserved- ? I have ;.o personal acquaintance with Dr. Jack? son, but his high character I.as commended him to ray respect ; nor am I interested in bis opinion of any particular location, at Luke Superior whieli ho may liave given : but I would ask, in wat is he deceiver].' It is due to Dr J. and to the public, that the writer should come out ati?I specify, in what- Dr. 3, is do- . ceived, how ami in wliat particular, or stanil con? victed as a cowardly calumniator. The one-aided no,i partial view which he take? ,,f the ?abject evinces a mind singularly distorted in it? power i>\ perception an,I reasoning, or a heart filled with disappointment, or goaded I,y some private g rief or actuated by some worse motive. it is certainly no agreeable risk to present any one in the licht in which this writer has placed him? self! The truth, in this great enterprise, should be known, and the foregoing remarks, if they snv,?r "l severity or want of courtesy, are so because they seem to be necessary to present the \\ bole truth in : connection with the article referred to. [t is proper to Bay. that in this ?real enterprise, it.at promises so much wealth, and which the public now views with so much favor, there will be irauiis practiced, ami there will be failures ami disappoint? ments. The unprincipled, tin: impudent, the ex? travagant, the miskilitu!, the ardent and the san? guine will rush into this department of industry ami business, a? they do into any other that promises t-uch rewards, ami of course its history, like that of manufacturing or mining ?11 lead, will be marked by failures, and by success, by losses and by gains.? It is as certain thai the prudent and the skillful will make money, as that the imprudent and the extrav? agant will lose it. A more ill-fated and unfortunate series of blun? der? could not well have been perpetrated in ihc same space, than are to be found in the letter, in an attempt to contradict the facts of the article of the Huston Post. He says ihu jirr dollars and not four dollars per ion is necessary for raisiug: the ore. A highly re? sponsible and respectable practica] miner, who has spent sevtial years at Lake Superior, and who ha.? Leen engaged in mining for twenty years, is authori? ty for this assertion. Hut utimit that doable the amount is require,! and liiat instead of six dollars, twelve should be neces sary for smelting, crushing, A:e. still the produce will be highly profitable and lucrative. The public are greatly indebted to the louer for the valuable mi mission which is vouchsafed, and that is, " thai the Cuba and Jamaica Mates hare been wrought for years with success, and in work ing them distinguished business men in Seir York and Boston have been engaged." It is grateful, in deed, \h this desert of scepticism to meet with one '' oasis of failli?one green spot, where truth and hope muy repose. He denies that the " veins vary in width from six inches to sixteen feet." Was he ever at the Lake Superior Mines ? At Eagle Hiver the vein is twenty feel wide. Atibe Massachusetts Co. loca? tion four feet Bohemian about the sanie. The Pittsburgh Co. at Eagle River Cliffs four feet wide. Ho says "that black oxi.le veins at Copper Har? bor, six inches in width, yield over twenty-five per cent." The fact only differs from bis assertion in this, thai of the HO tons of black oxide shipped to Boston, from 62 to tit? per cent was the yield. It is a little remarkable that the 6 in. vein reterred to is ? in. and that very near to it. on the same location, is another promising veinoftt'x/eef in width,in which they are at work, which has escaped his notice en tirely .' On the Superior Co. location, immediately adjoining that of Copper Harbor, is a vein live feet wide, and one t? feet wide, yielding from \i{ to 50 percent, according to the best analysis. hi a vein of four foot width 10 miuers and l? common laborers, with high wages, and provisions at Inchest prices, will take out 10 tons per day daring the business season, viz. ."> months, which will be 1300 tons, and this at 10 per cenL will pro? duce 2?0,000 lbs. of Copper, and this al 10 cents per lb. is 841,600. Now aUowinii the exorbitant charge of $10 per ton for raising-, smelting ?Vc will leave a " large margin of profit" of 823,000 ; and the whole amount of capital employed ought not to exceed 85000, including the cost of the mill fur crushing, washiiiL-.
