named Fell, home, in a wagon, be waa assaulted
about two milea from this city, on the FratAford
trad, by a man who, jumping into the wagon, ex
daimed, " i ?u scoundrel, yoa. what are you do
ing with my wife V A struggle ensued; Mr. W .
feil out of the back part of the. wagon and was
?tunned. While in an insensible condition the
assailant attacked bun iurtously with some sharp
instrument, and woonded, mutilated and maimed
bim a truly'shocking manner.
Mr W. was left bleeoina: in the road, while the
nan and woman drove oft' together. He found
bis way to a neighboring hoase, and this m rniu ?
waa conveyed to the hospital, where he Trill proh
ably recover.
Aa Mr. Woodside will give no satisfactory ac?
count of the occurrence, the police have, so far,
been unsuccessful in their search for the perpetrator
of the horrible outrage. Mr. W. states that he
met the woman at the corner of Second and Vine
ata. and, as he has known her for some time, she
requested him to accompany her horns in her
market wagon, as she waa afraid to go home.
He got into the wagon, they started for the coun?
try, and be waa assaulted aa above related.

When I w rote you last, Spring was smiling at
the departure of Winter , but whilo we thought
ber beauties were a blooming, there came a frost'
a bitter frost, and nipped her " in the bod," mm
again.it is warm?oppressively hot and close.
Southern hotels seemed doomed to destruction ,
two in Mobile and the 8t. Charles here are a heap
or heaps of ruins The 6t. Louis, at which we
now are, tiki lately unteuanted and deserted, is
spacious, airy, and by the late lessees of tho 8:.
Chartea well conducted. It now accommodates
nearly four hundred persona
Jenny Lind and Barnum are in town, bllowod
and sought after by 80,000 strangers. Tue excite
ment is intense. The first aalo of tickets realized
over tiH'.uoc
The Custom House here is begun on a grand and
magnificent scale?more so than any other in tn
Uuited States. It seems to be progressing wit'i
railroad speed, having a railroad all round it, the
more eaaily to convey to their proper places tue
huge blocks of granite of which it is being built.
Southern cities appear old ami docaying wiien
compared with Northern. Building materials of
all kinds decay much aoonor hero than at the
North. Pitch.pine planks, of which the wharves
are constructed, last here, at tho longest, hut five
yeara; at the Nortn they wnl keep some twenty
years.
Cotton market dull and Cotton declining.
Money market somewhat relieved, but not easy

Holders are scarcely so firm. Woolen Goods aro
firm with a steady activity of demand. Bleache 1
and unbleached .-hirtinga and Sheetings show only
a moderate inquiry and wit i diminished firmnesj,
holders taking alarm from the aspect of the Cot'
ton market. Drills are firm with a moderate sta ?
snd fair demand. Osnahurgs contiuue stealy
with a very small stock ami verj limited de nn !
Denims are in better request ai l stesdy in price.
Stripes continue to sell moderately at steady
prices. Ticks with a good stock aro scarcely so
firm for the better grades. Printing Cloths are
dull: printers buy as sparingly as pcssible owing
to the turn the Cotton market bis taken, as well
as to the increase in stock of Prints ia printers
bands. Holders, however, arc iirm for the mo
niCDt, but a farther decline in Cotton will neces?
sitate a concession in Cloths. The demand for
Prints is no*, so brsk and there ;s an easier tone
in the market, with more desire to sell Irom the
increase in stock. A fair business is doing in
Ginghams, but there is an increase in the supply
and prices are without change. Chanihrays are
very limited in request witii a diminished Bra I
in prices. There is more doing iu Lawns with ?
steady supply of new goods , the prices are s;?. tdy.
A sale, howevur, at auction of old stock La Was

prices under those current. Muslin de Lain61 an
selling moderately in extent at steady prices, bit
the demand is not yet auive. Litatejl IN doll
and heavy. The clothing trade has been buy i o/
Cloths freely, but more of foreign than domestic
fabrics. There is a'so more Inquiry which prom,
ises a better activity ; prices are firm. Too
country trade runs mostly on colored cloths. Sat?
inets are steady with a fair demaud. Casaimeres
are in fair demand and steady In prices. Sheeps
Gray? are rather higher for the mediam and bet?
ter qualities, which are not in so large sto... as
{ the lower grades. Tho demand is good far the
I country trade. Flannels are firm and ateady,
though in limited demand. The demand has in a
measure subsided for French Goods, but a fair
business is doing, though the stocks of fancy and
millinery goods have been well sifted from the re?
cent more active demand. Klacks are booonlog
more brisk of sale. French, German and British
; Cloths are in fair request, especially of tho me?
dium and lower graues. Fancy Cassimeres and
fancy \ eatings aro very active. T?o slock of

the importations having been very freely taken

the South, there is an increasing disposition to
bay ready made Clothing instead of the material,
and a decreasing disposition to put up with
country-made garments. The consequence is an
ever increasing business bars with great baoyan y

The Legislature of the State of Indiana Mas
juat passed an Act authorixing the Crawford rille
and Wabash Railroad Company to extend their
Koad south from Craw ordavillo, to connect with
the lrdianapolis and Terra Haute Hoad, at a point
a few miles west of Indianapolis, thus giving a
railway communication from Indianapolis to La?
fayette, by way of Crawfordsviile Putnam Co.,
through which the extension runs, will take
158,888 of stock in her corporate capacity, the re
sidue of the stock necessary will soon be raised*
and the line pat under contract for grading and
bridgimr early this year. That part of the lice ly?
ing between Crawfordsviile and Lafayette is al?
ready graded and bridged ready for the iron, now
on its way from Wales, and will be nmpleted in
July next. Thia line traverses a district 0? roan
