An air lino ttrawu from St. Louie to New-York treweraee very nearly the aame route aa tba Ohio Central Road. This Road also runs nearly parallel to the National Hoad, and baa one great aivaustage of baring a largo local traffic pro. aided for it aa soon aa completaJ, puiing as it ?toea through some of tba oldest and richest coaa ties in Ohio. Nearly all the travel of tbe National Road will be transferred to the tttvUroad and iateraecting at nearly right aaglea tbe Muxkingum Hirer Improvement and the Ohio Canal. It will draw a conaiderabld business from tboee tribu. tariea. The Charter of the Company is a liberal ot.e, authorizing tbe building of a road from the boundary of Indiana through tb? antue length w' of Ohio, and with the ataal rights granted to railroad*, and confirming the counties and towna through which it may pan the right to subscribe to the stock. The connections at each end of this Road, by which it will become a link in the great chain of Roads from St Louis and Cincinnati and Baltimore, we hare before no? ticed. A large traffic, it is confidently expected by tbe Directors, will be bad in live hogs, which will be trans ported on tbe hoof to Baltimore, and the business of pork packing be tranaferred tfl that place. The offal of the hog ia worth m jre in Baltimore than at the West, and the cost of re^ salting and inspection will be saved. Tho Coa trade, it ia also estimated, will reach 100,000 tuns, for the consumption of the interior of the State. A large business will alto be done in the trans portation of building stone. Ia relation to the traffic to be expected from Zanesville alone, the Exhibit of the Directors says: The city of Zanesville, with exhaustless minet of iron had coal, and blest with a water power in equaled in the West, is destined to be the most important manufacturing town in Ohio. It holds tbe first rank in that respect already; and a railway outlet, to the diluvial region beyond the coal field, will furnish, at once, a very largely in? creased demand for ber manufactures, and open to her an ultimately limitless market. In addi? tion to the abundance and cheapness of tbe water-power, Coal can be famished at tbe manu? factories for -? j cents to tl per tun ; and at the well cultivated country around it, gives a bounti? ful and cheap provision market, there must be opening,?for Zanesville manufactures of iron, nails, cotton, glass, whitelead, paper, dec.?a very enlarged range of traffic. As some evidence of the amount of trade which this place and its neigh? borhood could furnish to the Western Division of the Central Road, independently of the large in? fluences to flow from a railway junction at the im? portant town of Newark, and also at Columbia, it may be here said that the Reports of the Board of Public Works show that, in It 17, the freight handled at Zanesville and Dresden alone, to say nothing of the business of nine other trading points in the county?waa three saWtXtasavJ Staat more than the whole tunnaire business of the Little Miami Railroad for tkt year 1849. And yet that Road was able to declare ten per cent, dividends on an amount of tuice the ettimated cost of the ?stern Division of the Central Ohio Railroad; A careful estimate of the bus-nets of thedivi ticn between Columbus and Zaneaville has been made with the following result: 6n < ia bblt ttlt, (from Morgan and Mus aingutn Counties).9.0S0 tunt I a i (at gailont none wi-e.2,558 Iron and Mailt.I,5b0 Glassware. 110 Castings.1,210 Wim? From what we can learn there will be a large attendance at the sale of these, bonds. Next to the faithful and economical building and management of a Railroad, the amount of bu .jnese is the most important feature of thete en terprises. In relation to tho traffic of tho La Fayette and Indianapolis Road the Directory gives the annexed summary i Some idea of the position this road is to hold in tbe general ?ystetn of the country may be gamed from its presentation at the commencement of thtte re mark a No leu than live roads, built or building into Indianapolis, from the south and eatt, will teek a north-wettern outlet over the La Fayette and Indianapolis road. And all the roads from the weit aiming for the Upper Wabath River, from Springfield, Illinois, to South Bend, Indiana, make a focus at Lafayette. " Tne Northern Indiana Railroad Company," which has affiliated with the "Southern Michigan,'- hasse cured the right to build to La Fayette from South Bend or Michigan city, and propose to exert it at an early day?the " Central Michigan " proffering to do the aame thing. And thia line from the Southera Michigan Falls, at Lafayette, almoat in? to continuity with the " Northern Croaa Rail road " of Illinois, now in the hands of the Morgan and Sangamon Railroad Company of which the preeident retidea in New-York, and on which, by their contract with Illinois, they are required during the present and each succeeding year t? expend at leaat f?O.??O east of Spriuglield?the State having already in part graded the line One hundred and twenty five miles of direct extension of tho L. and 1. Railroad over an un? broken turface of rich and dry prairie.briuge ut to Juliet or Lockport, on the " Illinois Central," and in very direct transit to Chicago. An empire, so to speak, is growing up northwest of La Fayette, composed of a trading and traveling people, who, in their journeys eatt being forced to the head of Lake Michigan, will not all thence take the Lake Hbore route, but either going or returning will choose to pass along tbe central lines and through our western capitals, which, in addition to tbe strong attraction of Cincinnati, will bring thou? sands upon our road | Tbe best and aurest anchorage of a road, how? ever, ia its local business- In this respect no road in India* a ia more favorably ntuated than the one here presented. It is eaough to state that in every foot of its progreai it traverse! the very' best part of Indiana, now yielding a large sur? plus?that its northern extremity rests at tue head of steamboat navigation, on the Wa baah river and at the beat market town on tho Wabaah and Krie Canal; and its south? ern terminus, at Indianapolis, is within con? venient reach of Cincinnati, Louisville, and the Ohio markets. In the report for 1*50, just pub? lished, of the Little Miami Railroad, the Presi? dent aeta down the way-business at B-,159,000 agaii'tt tl37,000 of through business. Oa this road tbe proportion of transportation to travel ia about equal; on the Madison road it is as two to one The j Stockholders of the Union Bank at Swenton, Vt on the 32d inat, made choice of the following Board of Director, i H. P. Hitchcock, George Oreene, Ii. M. Reynolds, Homer B. Royce, Joseph B. Lake, Geo. W. 8andborn, John Barrey, and the Directora chose George Greene for President The past week has been almost the dull? est of the last six weeks in Dry Goods. Transac. tions are for the most part suspended as betwean tbe early and the later trade of tbe season. Tho former has ceased. The 800.them and the West* em and South Western aa well aa the City deal era made their early purchases with great caution and limitation, in presence of high prices and with a fear of further enhancing them by any extrava? gance of demand, and from a feeling of uncertainty as to the course of trade They have satisfied their more immediate wants, and the trade now awaitt, with some impatience and anxiety, aa well aa with a quasi feeling of disappointment at tbe re> j ?its Una tu of tbe business of (be ?eason-th? scttirg in of Spring activity early in the ensuing moiith. Meanwhile tbe Cotton market hu taken a decided downward tarn. The foreign demand has fallen off for the raw material and with heavy accumulation of 3tock in the Southern ports, es? pecially in New Orleans, prices have given way, and are falling by their own unchecked gravity.? This altered state of things affects the market for L'ottot, tiiiods. still greater reluctance ia felt to buy with a growing desire to sell, though the ab sence of lartre stocks prevents much abatement in price. Tbe result ia leas firmness and the loai ot that tendency to advance which previously char? acterized the market Bleached Sheetings and Shirtings are in moderate request at previous prices. The stock is considerable and no large parcels could be separately placed without a con? cession in price. Unbleached Sheetings and Shirtings are in leas demand and the market firm for purchasers. The transactions are nona of them large, but are made up of small parcels at old prices. Tbe coarser qaalities sell more freely ? British Goods are active for nearly all descriptions and prices well supported More inquiry prevails for Prints, and Printed Linen Lawns are in demand for fa . . styles. The Cloths sold at auction were stale goods. Holders are firm in prices, and there is no pressure on tbe market French goods are inactive. Silks are in very moderate demand, but tho stock to seloct from is very light, The late arrivals were aold previous ly to order, and do not appear on the market.? The Havre packets do not bring full cargoes, and the importations are falling off Wo notice but small sales in French Ginghams at good prices in fancy and dress as well as blacks at firm ratet, which, however, considering the cost of imports tion, barely cover commission. Ribbons of de tiralle styles are very scarce. French Cloths are scarcely ao active, but prices are steady.
