There were present some two hundred and fifty gentlemen, including the artists of the city, the representatives of the preaa, and several promt went amateurs and literary notabilities. The table was laid in the large saloon of the Acade. ray, and at about nine o'clock the screens before the doors leading into that apartment were re? moves! and the Company summoned to an excel lent and abundant supper. Previous to this the pictures in tbe other rooma were inspected with much satisfaction by the gentlemen present The opinion waa universally expressed, that this exhibition surpasses its pre decesaora in excellence, and indicates a gratify? ing degree of progress on tbe part of tbe artists generally. Tbe supper having been discussed, the Presi? dent Ash er B. Durand, Esq. called the audience to order and read a brief and appropriate state? ment of the history, purposes and position of the Institution. He then proceeded to offer the regu? lar toasts. One upon the relation between art and religion drew forth a speech from Hev. Mr Bellows, which waa loudly applauded by the au? dience. Dr. B. spoke of the tendency of Ameri can society to sensualism, to money making and material enjoyment, to the neglect and controven tion of the principles of the spiritual gospel This tendency art bad to straggle against; artists were thus the missionaries of better things. A great deal might be done by rendering art fashion? able, by making it necessary for the inhabitants of tbe palaces on the Fifth Avenue and other mag. nificent streets of the metropolis to order pictureg from our artists to adorn tbeir parlors instead of hanging them with mirrors. Mr. Bel'ows con? gratulated the Academy on the good service it is performing, and ranked it aa one of the most im portant of the public institutions of the city. Rev. Dr. Bethune was then called for. He said it waa an error to suppose that art was not encouraged in thia country. On the contrary, he would atlirm that there was no country in the world where pictures were bought ao freely or at pricee so remunerative to the artists as here. Of course be did aot speak of tbe few great works whose value waa beyond American fortunes, but of the productions of existing artists. Oo this subject Dr. Bethune enlarged with force and elo? quence, weaving in a stirring appeal to the pa. triotiam of hia hearera and their devotion to the Union. To the refining and elevating influence of trt upon the life and habita of the people, he also paid a tribute which was warmly applauded.? In the coarse of his speech some persona at the other end of the room being rather loud in con? versation, he stopped and aaid, aa two speakers could not be heard at once, he would gladly yield the floor to the gentleman. Thia reatared atlence ?nd in response to loud calla of " go on ! " he con? tinued- I To the toaat in honor or the Art Union Abraham M. Cozzena, Esq , its President, briefly responded, assuring the Academy of tbe zealoua cooperation of that Institution in every effort to promote the intereata of Art. Tbe Preaident of the Academy of Fine Arts, Jonathan Surges, Esq , also replied to a toast in which he was officially compliment? ed. Mr.Stargea controverted the notion that had been put forth that Art had nothing to do in the way of directly enforcing tbe leasona of religion and morality. To the toast to the Press Erastus Brooks, Esq eloquently responded, aaauring the members of the Academy of the support of the journals in their efforts to cultivate the taate and ennoble the tendenciea of the community. Lite? rature being toasted, Dr. Griawold, Parke God win, Esq and Mr. Lewis Gaylord Clark were suc? cessively called for and made speeches. That o' Mr. Godwin waa admirable for wit and falicitiea of expression. Proaper M. Wetmore, Eaq. being called for, in very neat and happy terma paid a tributo to the Preaident of the Academy, to which Mr. Durand replied in decidedly the beat apeech of the evening. With characteristic modesty he narrated his experience, not only aa one of the founders and aa an officer of the Academy, but as an artist. The speech waa one to be heard, not reported, its beautiful aroma would be lost in tha attempt to tranafer it from the scene where it waa produced. A* er Mr. Durands, speeches and sent intents followed each other in rapid succession till tbe hour of retiring. A toaat to the ArtiatsJAssocia? tion waa responded to by Mr. Waloott. Nor were the great artists of Germany and Franca, nor our own illustrious countrymen in Europe, Power, Greenough. Crawford, Page and Leutze, forgot? ten. The whole occasion waa one of the moat de? lightful at which it waa ever our fortuno to be preaent. Everything augurs aucceaa to thia Exhibition of tbe Academy, a aucceaa which, wa may her? re? peat, it well deserves. Of tha character and value of the principal pictures a very early opportunity will be taken to render an account in theae columns. ^ Sen" MflTisti.?The Truateea and In? spectors of the Ward Schools of this city hold an important meeting thia evening in Wars!
