Adam and Eve, there is nothing to authorize the no?

fully p.iii.cipated. The distinctive features of indi- I

race. Like the individual, the race has its eniidhood,

The WsATHSB.?Another snap ofbitfog
cold commenced yesterday, giving us a second edi?
tion of the wintry weather of January, through with?
out its tnowy exhilarations. A clear, drv atmoa
phere, was favorable to locomotion, to which the
side-walks presented but few remaining Impedi
mer.ts. In the evening, a brilliant display of the
Aurora Borealis gave great satisfaction to numerous
sky-gazers, and from present signs, a repetition of
the performance may be expected.

it is true that in any house which we have at pres.

lie ia unwilling to pay a dollar or more for inferior
artists, as the rt suit has proved. There is no doubt
that if the united audiences as Astar pla -c and Nib
lo'is were assembled at a reasonable priiie in a?qi lObMi
hojse.the proceeds would cover the necessary ex.
pea (s. with a li.alai.ee in the manager's favor. If
the) do not. the Ojiera must be abandoned, because
there can be no government subvention. There is
r.o proper aristocracy, and there is no sufficient m i
sical taste in the community. Could dependence
be reasonably placed upon either of these three re_
sources, the price might be raised. Bat as the pro.
fit must support the Opera here, there inus'. be ihe
people's price, or the thing will be an lncffi 'ient
imitation of something altogether foreign. Ii seems
to us that the fatal fault of the Opera-maaagement
in this country, until recently, has been the forget
fuliuss of the fact that New-York is not London,
or Paris, er St. Petersburg, or Havana.
Another Dreadful Accident on the
Ebie Railroad?Two Persons Killed.?Another
dreadful accident occurred on the Erie Railroad on
W ceres'.it. while the mail train from he West was
stopping at Hejiosit for dinner, and most of the p .s
secgers were in the saloon. While ihe passenger
train w as standing at the station a freight train ran
into the rear car and entirely broke it up, killing, al?
most instantly, two passengers and severely wound?
ing another. The persons kil'ed were Miag Wisner
of tiothtn. Orange Cox, and an Indian girl. Mr
Mooney was severely, if not fatally, wounded. We
are informed that the cause of the accident was the
grota carelessness and neglect of positive orders by
the engine man, and the conductor of the freight
train. The freight train was an a switch at Sum?
mit, eight miles from Depos.t, when the passenger
tram passed, and ought not to have arrived at De?
posit until seren minutes after the passenger tram
left. The freight trains are not allowed to run over
twelve miles an hour, and if the instru-tions had
been obeyed, the tram would cot have reached De?
posit till long after the passenger train had left
Both the engine man and the eonduovnr knew that
tie tram would stop at Deposit, and remain there
twenty minutes, as that is the regular dining place
Mr. MastertoD, the conductor of the passenger
train, !? mi the station watchman, saw the freight train
sjsj ag, a'.d tne conductor jumped up >c the eait'.ne
and ?tmted their train with suffu lent speed to lessea
vcrv much the force of the collision. The engine
man and conductor of the freight train sprsng off
before the engine struck, and thus saved themselves.
We a?e informed that the officers of the company
have ordered a rimd invest'ga?on to be made into
the circumstances attending the accident, and will
spare no pains to bring to justice the engineer and
corductpr of the freight train. Tney are probably
botn under oirtsl t'Qw.
