BLATCHFORD SEW ARD k OEIkTWOLD, u9-ltwiwW rialntiS a Attorneys rROM B08T0N. From Our Own Correapondent POETOof, Lftf. L 16?>'?'. We have bad a prodigious excitement about the quality of our rum: not our general, universal, ro.-mopolitaii. ewrj-dav nun. liut our official ruin; rtim covered and protected by the State Coinim-* xioner's seal and attested by the Assayer's certifi rate. Laut Winter there were painful minors that this mm had been adulterated, doctored, hocused, flavored, weakened, strengtlu ned, or ? extended ' (a* the Latent pbraite in), but although the Legislature undertook to investigate, the priM.f was somewhat detective. During the Siiininer, the Revision Com? mittee, at the instigation of voting Mr. Spofford of Newbtirypejrt, took into eon tide rat ion tne expe? diency mi aboliehinn the State Agency, but finally eoiiciiided to ?tay their Vandal handH. In due pro i-e-ri ot reviKiiig the law*, ti e question came up ?nit, but week. Mr. Spoflord attain made bia mo? tion, and loudly declaimed nennst the quality of the official liquor, which he prououueed ruinou* to the health of the people. Hut the representative*, mused to heed Iii? appeal. After the vote was taken, Mr. Russell of lionton pro|Mised ? Commit t. e ot Inquiry into the dealin*j? mi the Liquor Com? missioner w ith the firm of John Felton Al Co., and the Committee was appointed. I'p came John Felton, and up came his partner, Mr. Jaques, and they swore to certain transactions w ith RriMikhouse, the foreman of the Agenry, which on the face of them had a bad look. In brief. Bmokhouse had sent to Felton &. C'o.'s establishment some high priced French brandy, and bad it "extended" with alcohol, so that it became a very moderate priced brandy, and not peculiarly French. It m\fjrni M cntisidi r. m\ |>erhaps, of French descent, but nothing more. I believe that aomething was added for flavoring and coloring, and this was all. It is claimed on the one side that this, if " adulteration" in any sense of the word, is so in a harmless sense; that the alcohol and the coloring and flavoring mat? ter did not makf the original article more poisonous. On the other hand, as I judge by the clamor, some i.. ?.i.l*5 auppoee thnt this " extended" French bran ny would Dr a? fotol to th?? drinker as the> "mortal drug" which the nameless apothecary of Mantua sold youog Romeo. " Fut thla in any liquid thing you will, and drink it off; and, it you had the itrengtn of twenty men, it would despatch you atraight." \\i II, the law against adulteration of liquors by the State agent is not as severe as the Mantuati law against selling poison; it is only official death, and that has happened to Mr. Rurnli.im. the agent. He has taken himself off, to prevent himself from Mm taken off'; be hes resigned, aud the public h resigned, though I suspect he is not. The Hon. Jacob Sleeper was appointed to take Mr. Purnham'* place. BaWM a strict temperance man, it was supposed that he w 1 hi Id not adulterate with anything wor*v than the b? it of Cocbittiate water, and this would rertainly do no harm. Put be has declined, and there ia no appointment yet made. The investigation is still continued, but its main purpose is probably an? swered, and already the public interest iu it seems to decline. The report of the testimony is not half en interesting as The Trihi ne's comments, last Summer, on l)r. Somebody's circulars. There are several " morals" to be deduced from the transaction First, for Mr. Huruhauiand speculators of his class. If )ou have been engaged in any dishonest trans? actions, don't put them in a book, like the " His " tory of the Hen F< ?er." If you mean to do an honest business, don't trust it to dishonest Book housas. Second, for the Governor, look more sharply to the antecedents of your appointees, and inquire more closely as to the degree of confidence the ptanple will have in them. Third, for the people don t drink agency rum, or any oth'-r. Our State election takes place next Tuesday. The vote is likely to be smaller than last year, "but Gov. Rank?'? relative majority over all other caudi dateg, and his plurality over the Democratic candi? date is likely to be as large, and perhaps larger than it at as Last year. There is a shocking degree of innctivity iu the canvass, and mueh less tun than usual. 1 he Repiib)ia>an State Committee sent all their money to aid their friends out West, arid the public have heard nothing from the army of orators who are alw ays on hand when there is any danger of deieat, or when any deep interest is felt in politics. Gov. Banks has not spoken a word, a 11 at lobody seems to hare noticed the fact that Mill . r he nor the others on the State ticket have acknowledged the fact that tbey were nominata^d. Qtm. Wilson is helping you in New-York; Burim game is shooting buffaloes in Kansas; Cushing, nobody has heard from tor months, in the line of polities; Winthrop and Hillard are iu Europe; Hallett has bored nobody but the Lowell people, Hid Gen. Butler, who was going to make the can? vass so interesting has Dot been obliged to neglect lis business to any great extent for the purpose ot r. ?pouding to invitations to address the people. The, BaMMMses and conventions are, however, fully attended; the politicians are interested if the people are not. So tne Commonwealth is safe. You may announce, in advance, the triumph of the Republi? cans. I infer that some of your Democrats are in the hopes that Massachusetts may do something for thetr encouragement. For I find the manifesto of the Watts Sherman Vigilance Committee printed in f'/ie liotfon Countr at as an advertisement. Henry P. Thoreau delivered a lecture en John Drown at the Tremont Tcmpio ssj Tuesday evening. It was one of the " Fraternity " mm, Thero were some just and ttnkmg remark* in it, and many foolish and ill-natured one*. Sneers at tile R* i iibltcaiu were quite frequent. Men like (ten. To-day in the House of Representative* there hai been a great fuss over Muruhaui, the Liquor Commissioner. He refuaed to produce hi* books before the Committee, and the Committee aaked for further direction* from the House. After a long debate the House suffered itnclf to be driven by the noine of two or three Democrats, who w inli to make, capital enough out of the question to get reeUvfed to tin* Legislature in Republican district*, into ordering ita Sergeant-at-Anna to arrest Hurnhatn. And he was arrested, and brought to the bar for contempt. Dut by tins time the House was without a quorum, and was obliged to adjourn w ithout cat eebiiiug bun. Some of the members urged that he should be turned over to the officer* of the law, but this was too sensible a proceeding to find any favor. What w ill be done w ith the " elephant," remains to be seen. ._ A KEXTtCKY PRESS Ad AI SSV TUE " FREE SOL'Tlf MOB. r'resa The rrank/ort ( a>J Ctataoavcdfrk We are at a loa? to discover what waa propoeed to be twconipliahed by the mob w ho destroyed the printing material* of The Free South, in Newport, the ,ther dav.
