L'pplncott 4 Althoogli this volume is announced ft? tho 1 promised work o? tho Couii.ee? ?uiccioli,?tha 1 to whom tho attachment <>f I.?.i?l Byron, MM* to Moore, " cannot be con.-iilored otherwise tlia an eveat fort?nalo both for bis reputation and 1 pine-?"?it is altogether too ingenious and plau? a specimen of sp?cial pleading to be ascril>e?l lo unaided authorship, -ho most that we 8M M accept in that retard is tbe probable mig?cstn> tbe plan, and tbe furnishing of a portion of material?, Tbe execution of Um work lietmys a t la argument, and a freshness and vigor of Utai ti_?n, for which we oan scarcely give credit ti Italia? woman, whose acquaintance witn Bj commenced fully half a century ago. and who rever boon deemed remarkable for intcllec ability or literary cultivation. At tbat time, was ft young and simple girl of eighteen, emerging from the restraints of a convent to freedom of married life, with an imperfect edi tion, and no experience of the world. Tbo laps? years has doubtless given her intellect a wnler sei while the idolatry with which she Nfttdtd object of her youthful love still appears to retain warmth and intensity. The present volume is les? a biography of Lord ron, than a panegyric. It has been compiled fi various sources, includinsr the personal recollection the Countess Guiccioli, beat is devoted rather to illustration of his character, than to the narrative facts. Tbe features of ByTon's life which culled fo tho just reprehension of bis contemporaries, arc o ered with an artificial gloss, while every circi Btanoe that can be pleaded in his favor is set fo with the attractions of an enticing eloquei Probably no revelations are here made tbat \ change tbe established impressions concerning character of tbe celebrated poet.aThe vehement prt dices that wcro excite?! against him during bin li time l?y tho malignity of party-spirit, arid the b spite of literary jealousy have already to a great gree died out. Byron ia no longer considered 1 monster which his em-mien painted him. Way wa passionate, and reckless, as be was, his nature was no means destitute of admirable qualities, which i certainly presented in an attractive light in the p traitunes of this work, although tbey fail to ma him out a model of angelic, or even of human virtt Tbo exhibition of Byron's religious opinions wbi i_ here presented possesses considerable interest. 1 appears to have had a great susceptibility to religio linprcsMoiib, from tbe earliest age. although he net was a docile receiver of tbe traditions of the priet hood. During his residenco at Cambridge, especial] he became the subject of manifold doubts, and win be left England for tbe first time, bis mind was in state of painfnl indecision. But the cbargo atheism which was brought against bim seems have been utterly without foundation. He was d gusted with the pretensions of dogmatic systems, b never ceased to cling to the faith in God in which 1 had been educated. The Bible constituted his favc ite reading, in the magnificent poetry of which ! found tbe highest inspiration. He even cherished preference for Catholicism, at least in the latter yea of his life, deeming the doctrine of Purgatory mc in accordance w ith the divine mercy than Iho abi lute punishment of sin as taught in the creed Calvinism. The marriage of Lord Byron naturally fills an i portant space in this volume. It is represented the great misfortune which was the source of others, exerting the most deplorable influence o < his character and destiny. But the tone of satire a contempt in which Miss -lilbank is spoken of, is ? fensive to good taste, and unwarranted by fact. 8 is described as a female belligerent, wrapjx-d in aco of mail of faultless perfections, with a heart ?1? _ t-ned by tbe study of mathematics, aud destitute the womanly traite of tenderness, pity, and forbea anee. Lady Byron's subs?quent life is an evidence the falseness of her portraiture asa persou of extreri jealousy, with a pedantic attachment to her ott ways, and no power of conciliation, with a mind 1 capable of sound judgment, though expert in tl technical forms of reasoning, and with no tout of tho feminine softness and sympathy which forn the atmosphere of happy domestio life. Even Moor with all his partiality for his friend, abstains froi such ungenerous disparagement, ascribing the ui happiness of his marriage to the want of adaptatio between the "calm affections and comfort?" of we?J ,Iock, and the "higher order of genius." Absurda is the elaborate sophistry of tho biographer on tb i fciihject, it is far more tolerable than tbo malignan insinuations of tbe compiler of this volume. Among tbe virtues of Lord Byron, great stn-ss ?. laid on his benevolence and kiudm?__, which cer tainly appear to have entered hugely into his com? position. Even as a child he showed no symptoms ol the cruelty which often seems an innate property oi that age. He was always sensitive to tbe pleasure oi the pain of those with whom be hvetl, and was easily overcome by a smile or a frown. He was ready to sacrifice his own talent ?o the remonstrances of his fflends, and even at times carried this ?In? ility to an extreme len_tb. One of hispoemsin tholirst edition of " Hours of Idl.mW' waa kindly censured by a friend as too free, upon which he withdrew aud burned the whole edition. At the solicitation oi Dallas and Giiloid, he suppressed bis favorite stan? zas of Cbilde Harold, and at the ?n.itanco of anothei fritad lie MIMd writing the first canto of Don Joto. His indulgence, great toward all, was execssive toward bis inferiors. He was the best of in.u-tith, ond was beloved by his servants. They were so attached to him that they would have borne every? thing for his sake. His death plunged them into the deepest grief. His love of children was another sign of hid natural good u ess of heart. He treateil tin m with incomparable tendernt-ee, and was uevir hap? pier than when he made them happy. Many other as.x-cts of tbo better part of Lord Byron's nature are exhilntetl with a certain adioit ness, and even force, of illustration, showing that ho was, in many case?, the victim of harsh and untena? ble jinl-inents, but l?y no mean? disproving the self willed v?h?mence of his temper, and his scornful defiance of tbe wholesome decorums of society. His early death no doubt prevented the ripening of the higher qualities of which his lifo presents the un? mistakable germs ; the youthful eUervesHcence of his passions might have given place to a nobler intellec? tual development ; but he must have been endowed ?with at tribute? of which humanity can rarely boast in order tobare become the paragon of excellence ?which is held up to admiration in tho prismatic colors of this volume. CAUSES OF CONHCMITION. THE HOMEOPATHIC QUARTERLY. A Jo?BSit, I)_ ?...lt.ll IO .UK iMKKKSIt OK Pl'KK HOM-O.AIIIV. By KOLUH K. OB-OB, M. I).: IlutTulo, N. Y. Dr. Gregg claims to have made an important dis? covery in relation to the origin and cause of to i ?umption, aud in the journal he is publishing ho is unfolding and presenting it to the attention of think? ing minds. The main interest of the journal appears to us to center ou this point. Tho immediate cause of consumption, as is well known, is the formation in the lung* of what is called tubevlet. But what is tie cause of the formatiou c _ tubercles T Where and bow do they tako their rise. This is the im? portant question to be answered. It it can be answered, some tncaus may perhaps be found to proveut tho forma; iou of these terrible and deadly enemies of man, more fatal t?i him than the one-half of all tho other ?lireasoe com? bined by whioh he is assailed. A tu hercio is a small massoi hard, yellow i ib, opaque mutter, which it de? posited at numerous potato in tho lungs (as in other parto of tiie body), which gradually softens, excites suppurations, break, up tho lung in its vicinity, forces its way out, and destroys it in the operation. Medical men have ?ought long and patiently to dis? cover the mode in which the formation of these bodies takes place in the lungs. The microscope has been brought to bear to aid in solving tho difliculty. The most eminent medical mini!? of ElUOf. have labored assiduously in this field, and at yet uo positive result hua been at? tained-no c-i'luuati'/U found which cam.? with it conviotion, and obtains general assent. Dr. Gregg eontea fcttb srit. solution. It may appear at first sight big?1> 1 sumptuous for a man In a comparatively iinkn? position, in one of our inlantl cities, far ?way f' the great Academic?, to produce a new tlieory SI great and ihllictilt ?subject; but tho best SMS/SI bo given is to examine with inipartialiiy Iba expl ation bo offer?, and see whether there is any pn? bility at 1 truth in it. We will endeavor to ? briefly an idea of Dr. (iregs's IfcSStJ of the format of tuborclea. We will avoid all technical tonus i minuto detail?, ami Btuto the subject in broad outl ami a? .imply as jxaisible. The bl.M)?], to Ivegin wilh, is composed of two m con.it it in-lit part?. First, of a liquid, which is BSl the ?frtim (the scrum is componed of water and al men). Second, of solid little bodies, iloating in t liquid, and following its current, called tho bk collides. There is also ?small quautity of lil>i fatty matters, and salt?; but of these it is not nee sary to speak. The nearest approach to albumen the white of an egg. If wo imagine some whit< an egg, beaten up in water, wo have an ide* the serum. Tho blood corpuscles are extrem minute, bodies, of s circular form, and ll toned on the sides. They are little cells ol disk-shape, they contain red coloring matter, a give the blood its red appearance. Conceive these minuto bodies, flowing witii tho serum thron the arteiTOH at.d veins, and you havo a geueral ii of the blood. Witli these preliminary explana! io we will now endeavor to state Dr. G i egg's then: The pro.iortions of the three constituents of t blood mentioned nre as follows : Albumen, 7 par water, 40 3-100 paits; blood corpnscles, f>l 2-100 parti ont of 1(0 parts. J\o?v, nature has creawid tho bio corpuscle? to live and Uoat in ft serum, composed albumen 7 p.irt.s, ami water 40 parts. This, acconlm to Dt. Gregg's view, is what take? place. And is ia these distended blood eorpiim-lc?, at??pj>?' in the oapilluries, that he finds tli origin of tubercles. But before explainin this point, let tu? refer to another. All tho interm jmrts of tbo body are lined with a skin or SSSSSI| called the nuirons irembrpne.
