sance Committee havtng In charge the funds contributed
for the relief of tho sufferers by the Brooklyn Theater
?re, a larpe audieuce gathered m the. Brooklyn Academy
of Music last ?veiling. Among those present were Col.
William K. Sinn, Alderman F. B. Klsher, Heurv K. Plerro
pont, John F. Henry, D?nias Barnes, the Rev. Mr. Bell,
Alderman D. 8. Arnott, Judge Jasper W. Gilbert, Sheriff
Albert Daggett, Corporation Counsel DeWitt, the Rev.
J. O. Bass, the Rev. J. Hyatt Smith, Augustus Maverick.
Mayor Hchrocder, rire Marshal I*. Ready, II. C. Kin?,
Henry E. Boweu. H Chauncey, the Rev. Charles ft Hall,
the Rev. Emory J. Hajnes, and Mr. Beecher.
It was fully 15 minutes after 8 o'clock before the com?
mittee, headed by Mayor Schroeder, appeared upon the
stage. When the applause which ensued had subsided,
the Mayor announced that the Committee of Arrange?
ment? bod selected Judge Gilbert to preside. Judge Gil?

ns together has been too strongly and too sadly im
Srcsaed on our heart* and minds to need mention. Our
uty to the dead has tx-eii discharged, but there remains
s duty to the living, to the widows and orphuns who
bare beeu deprived of their chief means of support. I
caunot inform you of the extent of the des? lutlon ; that
la for others. I can only express the hope.and ihe belief
that the response to this appeal In behalf of the needy
will be worthy of the Christian community In which we
live. (Applause.)
The report of the comuilttee, which was next read,
after alluding to the circumstance? which gave rise to
the formation of the organization, stated that the follow?

The investigations made as to the condition of Ihe fani
ule* of the victims roaiilted In ascertaining the following
facts : Of those who perished, 31 left widows and small
children who had beta entirely aepeudcut on them for
tljelr support. Four left widows alone entirely destitute.
Tweuty-two left widowed mothers with children who
looked almost exclusively to the ones taken away for
their subsistence. Eight left widowed mothers whose
last family tic was swept awny by the flames, and who
are now entirely dependent on the charity of *trangers.
Six left orphan slaters and brothers who depended ou
then), and 45 youn* men destroyed left parents who had
learned to lean ou tuera, in tlit-lr declining years, and on
whose aid their families mainly do?K-uded for their ex?
istence. Eleven widows who are about to become
mothers are numbered among the suffering survivors.
Two hundred and slx?y-three families hav? been visited ;
lot? of Utes? will require permanent assistance, and 75
will require temporary aid for the Winter at least. The
aggregate number of persons embraced in these familles
la, so far as known, between 600 and 700. The sum Ms*
bursed for temporury relief was $1,500, and ?,3.000
would be required to pay funeral aud other expense? not
provided for by the city. Alit-ndy allot meats to the
amount of $073 a we? k had been made, ami the proba?
bilities were it would be necessary to increase the
smtmut to 81,000 per week. No expenso had been in?

The Rev. Charles H. Hull was tbon introduced. He
said, among other things :

alluded to the lessons of the calamity, the most promi
m-nt of which was the unification of human nature. He
waa followed by Mr. Botcher, whose introduction was
greeted with prolonged applause. He said :

ous theaters In aid of the suflerers by the Brooklyn The?
ater fire proved eminently aucoessful. Tho plan of sell
lug ticket* throtign the police seems to have worked re?
markably well. Toe theaters were nearly nil crowded to
the doors. From the Union Square Theater, Mr. Palmer
tluiught, 2(H) or 300 persons were turned away. The pe?
