I he central Led ot the building contains some very
fine ?pecimeus of tropical piants and their beanti il
much enhanced by the uiaible fountain, almost htd
deu by the fblmge, but of which glimpae. muy he
had fiom various places. One of the huge attrac?
tions of this .spot is a bamboo tree. The young
shoot, which commenced growing about the last of
June. 18S0, is at present over forty feel in height,
with* prospect of soon reaching the root of the
building. It is surrounded by New-Holland pints,
two wine palms from the Easi Indies, and by many
ofber rarities from the tropical aud acmi-tropical
connine*
The plant-houses on either side aro here arranged
to meet the requirements of each class ot plants
which it is intended to cultivate, in the fernery,
tall, stately tree-ferns, .neh an Alsopbda, Dickaouia,
Cibotinm, etc., are sca'trred throughout, while tbe
more delicate filmy ferns are arrange I under glass
cases, where they appear to nourish, fi?re also ma.?

twonty-eight feet in diameter. This elegant tree is
a variety of the well-known aoqaq nnl, but is very
superior to the bitter a. a decorai ivo plant, having
a much more graceful habit. It is a native of Brazil,
and glows to a height of fifty feet.

Palm of Para, aud grows in swampy places along
th* river* within reach of tbe tidal-wave, where it
attaiM a height of thirty or forty feet, with ? alen*

nal* knives. Tbe fruit, which is about the size of a
assali alum, and of a purple rotor, furnishes the
beversge celled assai, which, when sweetened with
