3LEADING MEN OP JAPAN". With sn Hlatortonl Bani
mary of the Empire. By Cn xhles Lasma*. ero. pp.
an. Boston: b. Lothrop-ic Co.
This is tbe tint collection which bM been made
by a foreign writer of biographical Bketchnot the
leaders of public life in Japan. As the materials
were not gathered during Mr. Lanman's residence
in the Empire, bat in his own library in \V-_hlng
ten, through correspondence with American officials
and travellers in the islands and with the aid ol
Japanese scholars, the collection ls by no means
complete, and many of thc sketches are
?ague and unsatisfactory. In the face of
difficulties sece.iingiy insuperahle ho has
compiled 250 pages of contemporaneous biog?
raphy which is entirely new to Americans and
Europeans. Fifty-nine sketches are given, the
present Emperor and his father heading the hst. and
statesmen, reformers, authors, scholars and Jour
nnliata following la alphabetical order. Tho author
laments his inalnlity to SBpply information respect?
ing many prominent diplomatists and painters, hut
consoles himself with the r*nVction that ii is hotter
tc. have gaps in the collection (han to use material
of doubtful authenticity. To tho sketches is added
tho account of the Japanese Empire which ho con?
tributed to Johnson'. Universal Cyclopa-dia, and
??vasal chapter., on outlying depsndeaetse of the
Empire, on Corea, sad thc American Kxpedition di
Japan. The volume, is supplemented by a valuable
list of f.areign bibliography of the Eui ni re. Much
of the information between the covers is raw mate?
rial which needs to ta rcsvoiked. Thc volume bears
the evidence ol' painstaking industry and system?
atic effort to teeni*, absolute accuracy. Ks inherent
value xviii bc aptttectatcd bj ell student, of tho his?
tory nnd characteristics of this curious and inter?
esting nation. _
PROGRESS AND POVEBTT.
Bj B8UB*" -BOMB. New-York: John W. Lovell at Co.
12ino, paper, pp. 410.
Tho Irish public la favored with a new and cheap
edition ol the only economic work of marked origi?
nality, which thc rn "nt lead saltation has called
forth. It is tm secret that the most Muraeeoua and
aggressive leaden of tho movement, such men as
Michael Davitt aad John l'illcn.. liav.- been im?
pressed with the logic of the..*-pages, although the
followers of Mi. Parnell In Wt si minster have turned
from them svith affright. Tho work is chielly 1nter
esting as au Irishman's at tempt to apply theabstract
principles of politicalecononiv to tho land quest ion.
Mr? George's central iden is that the unequal distri?
bution of wealth is the direct cause of poverty nnd
depression, ami that COmut*" ownership in lam!
iii'ist be substituted for individual ownership. His
argument is that so long as there is private proper?
ty in land no increase in productive power csa per
; . Butty benefit ibo 8888808, lor poverty increase
a.. wealth increase.*, and waxes are forced dosvn as
M od active power is BUBUiented. Mr. Georgi's met hm I
et eatirpating pot arty and giving a taborac a just
wu&o is as simple as five words caa make it: "Land
must be common property."- If the attention of Irish
renders wero not entirely taken up with the land
qesetiOU they would perceive that their favorite
economist ta order to round out bis scheme into
logical completeness nnist advocate the "collec?
tivity" ol capital as well as land. If tbo land is to
return to the whole body of workers, why should
not the. masses ot capital loVOSted la mines and
factories ta equally shared, since they are accumu?
lations of human labor! If land i. to pass from
one generation to another ns collective property,
why should any form ol capital Isr exempt from the
principle-of "collectivity'? Mr. George stops nt
?? land nationalization," and being a well-read man
in economic science, displays not a little ingenuity
in giving a controversial and critical form to his
crude conception.
DOCTOR AND JUDGE.
ANF.W lulM Bl nllVKIt WKNDKI.I. nOI.MKS.
At thc annual banquet or the Boston Bar Associa?
tion, Tue.-doy evouiug, Mayor Palmer was called
upon ta speak for the city of llostou. He closed his
reiiiiiilvH by calling IB lum upon Dr. Oliver Wendell
Holmes?" tue father who went in search of a cap?
tain, and Untiing hun. preeeate now his con, tin
judge.'' Dr. Holmes responded by mading tta lol.
lowing poem, referring, *>f orana, ta ths raeeal
elevation of his son, oai s B saddler, to the judicial
hench;
" His Honor's Father yet remains
His proud paternal pMtare timi in;
But, while his tight be still maintains
To wield the linus hold rod and reins,
He bosvs beloro the lilial eruiiiic
What curious tnlts has life in store,
With all ita must-bes and ilsmay-hes!
Tba- sag, ol eighty years andmore
Once crept a nuisling am tbe tlamr,?
Kings, conquerors, judges, all were babies.
The fearless soldier, who has faced
The serried bayonets' gleam appalling,
Eor nothing save ii pia misplaced
The p. ill-flu! BUrnrv hus disgraced
With hours of unheroic bawling.
Tbs nighty monarch, whose renown
Pills up the stately page htetorio,
Ha* howled to vs liken half ibo town.
And blushed ntl by gulping dosvn
His castor oil or paregoric.
The justice, who, in gown and cap,
Condemns a irratch to strangulation,
Has scratched his nurse and spilled bis Pap,
And sprawled across his mother's lap
Eor wholesome lass's adiuinistiation.
Ab, life has many a reef to shun
Before la port wo drop our anebor,
But when its c BIM is nobly run
Look atti tor thors the wor* was done.
Life owes its headway to the spanker!
Yon seat nf justice well might awo
1 bo fairest manhood's half-blown Bummer ;
lhere Parsons scourged tta laggard law,
There reigned and ruled majestic Shaw,?
What ghosts to hail the. last newcomer!
One cause of fear I faintly Bans,?
The dtead lest (hit s's deieliciion
Miali give so lately cause toa blame
Our guilelen voters will exclaim,
" No need of Human j.irisiliction !"
What keeps tba- dan tor's trade alive T
Had air, bad water ; more'M the pity !
But lawyers walk where doctors (fri ve,
And 8IBIT8 in Streets where surgeons thrive,
Our Bos(oii is so pure a city.
What call for judge or court, indeed,
When riajbteoaaeenprevailsm through it.
Our virtuous esr eoodnclois Bead
Only a card whereon they read
" l)o right; it's naughty not to do it! "
The whirligig of time goes round,
Aud changes all things hut arleetion ;
One blessed comfort may be found
In heaven's broad statute svliich has bound
Each household to its bead's inn tee don.
If e'er aggrieved, attacked, aeoased,
A sire may dann a sol's devotion
To shield hts innocence abused,
As old A nc h ison freely utaed
His offspring's legs for locomotion.
You smile. You did not como to weep,
Nor I my weakness to be showing;
And these, gay stanzas, slight and ehe.p,
Have served their s.mple use.?to keep
A father's eyes from overflowing.
