NEW PUBLTCATIONa THE JUBILEE PICKWICK. *__" I^-sTIiiTMOITB PAPERS OF TnE PICKWICK art*. By CuaBias Dk-UB-is. With Xete* end Nu ?,eroii* Illustrations. Kdlteit by Charlo* nicken* the ounrer. In Two Volumes. 8vo, pp. xlvii., 544, _n_ xt., bSS. Macmillan _ fa. IS was flttlng that fifty yeara after tho publi ration of the "Pickwick Club" a jubilee edition ebould b? printed by the author's Bon, but on thc principle- that whatever ia worth doing ia worth (loin, wei J, t-he present attempt to commemorate the occasion must bc regarded as ft_Ung short Uf excellence arni of thc Just expectations of the l"trio_s who still love Dickens. The lapse of Urns lins no doubt casti a certain obscurity over some |_--s of "Pio-wio"-,"1 at least for the latest gen? eration of readers. Thu editor has endcavorcil to meei this difficulty by __a____gf numerous notes at the __j of caoh chapter. A bettor idea of tlie localities desi* ribed is given also by Dbe insert iou of woodcuts of places, historical houses, and bo forth There is an introduction giving an ac? count of the cha*__es which occurred rn the illus tiatii? of the book; chanses which, thoiirTh they Beenieri almost tl it. as frons at the moment, un doubtedly proved -_____* advantageous in tlie end. It is not probable that) rf poor Seymour had lived he would have continued to satisfy Dickens by his desi;ns. His humor was narrow and some? what _b______bj and away from his m^t lor, which ?ass _he illustration of sporting incidents from a comic point of Yiew. be had lit. le gift. Bnt the se? curing of Hsblot K. Browne ('Thia ") was sn im? portant gain. This artist was not ouly a much better drau nh taman than Seymour, but he possessed a more fertile and sympathetic imaginariou. and he wss able st all times to reulize the conceptions of I.ckens with remarkable accuracy and foin***. AU ?"?ho read the works of this author as they ap? peared originally owe moro than probably they know to the smbodiment of Dickens's characters by " Pbi_." J he popular conception of must of them bas been built upon those clever illustrations, not only in " Pickwick " aud in uearly ali tho sn tlior*s stones, bnt the latest ones. "0 hen, at lensth. the work of illustration was pnt in the baud* of other artists the superiority of Brown* appeared only Hie more conspicuously. The widow of Sey? mour somehow getit iu to her bead that hor husband had had todo willi the text as well as the illustra? tions of "Pickwick.'' lt was a fantastic illusion, bnt perhaps not mitch more unreal than George Cruikshank's long-maintained notion 'hat i.e. rather than Dickens, was theoritrinator of "Oliver Twist." He always Insisted that Dickens merely wrote up to his plates. Now. thom, li Brown never ?wade any claim of the kiud.it ts certain thats*, the Interpreter as well as the i!lustr.t'?r ol Dickens he deserves a particular consideration, nod thal a certain ai.d distinct element in the popularity of that writer's works was in the tinst place due to his ariistic skill nnd insight. These remarks are not digressive, for they lead np to the suggestion that ni any comprehensive, edition of "Pickwick'' such as a jubi? lee edition ought to be, care should have be^n taken not to separate the author and artist, but to show them working together for a common success, as they worked so many years in fill I accord. No doubt the fart that the jubilee edition is not published by Messrs. Chapman tv Hall, who cwn the " Pim " plates, ai counts for their absence. But it is asr-uredly to be regretted that Mr. Charles Dickeus the younger did not or could not make such an arrangement with his f.-ttber's old publishers as would have enabled him to use tho plates referred to. As th* case stands their absence detracts uanob. from the value and importance of the work. Nor ran it be said that other _otails leave no room for improvement. The so-called facsimile of tho original green cover of thc Pickwick iiuxubers is a copv. and not an exact one cither, upon a re? duced ta-alc and on white paper. Nttttdlttss to sav. it does not g ve those who never saw the original a just flea of the latter. As far as paper, type, binding and other uiechauital details are con? cerned, thu jubilee edition is ii*-;.t and even hand K.ine. Hut it !<? not iib good or as full as it could and shon'd have been, ami while it will be useful to thu Dickens student, its appearance does not so occupy the field that further cflort in tho same direction in Useless or even Kidt-.\ rTr-aXNA W___1T. Hy BUSS Clarke. [Famous Winuei. t-eries]. Hiuio. as. SOI. Ko1.,crts r,rot!iers. Miss Clarke lias written an interesting book upon an unpromising subject, The mother of John Wc*lcy was a Beana of strong character, but she is not an important personage except in connection with her son, and the biographies of Ute founder of Mt'lh,)di*m contain rill that it is needful to kuow of his family history. Whatever gaua***? habits of virtue he may havo derived from his parents, it does tut appear that homo ii.tiuenccs had much to do with what was peculiar in his views of the religions life or his methods of preaching. Never? theless Mi*! Clark's, as wc have said, uiakos an in tcrestiug bool". The domestio l'fe to which she introduces us was sinsnlaily unlovely. The Kev. Samuel Wesley, father of tbo apostle, was the incumbent of a poor living in a wretchod and ___tt_tu_l con ut ry district, and waa all his life at war with tbe world. Ile had no aptitude f.ir busi? ness, Le Butlered heavy los-os by tire and other niisfortiit.es, amt ho had nineteen children. It is no wonder that he whs always in distress, and that he passed some tillie in . debtor's jail. Neither lie nor his wife aaa popular in the ttalish ; perhaps the very pour ure never popular B-?ttUtttt Wesley was a i..a*lerfol wo.nan, who liked to rule her husband i ven io religious uiatlei*, an 1 we may presume that the exercise of her will was not strictly emilinetj to tbe family. Once when her bulban! was absent for a lou;, time in Lon,'.on, shu utgtinize.it and con? ducted Sunday ev-uiug services at the parsonage, greatly to tao displeasure of Mr. Wesley's clerical sut.siitute, whose con_regaiton deserted the church |gt these, meetings. Mr. Wesley remonstrated with his wife, hut situ justified herself in a long letter, and continued to officiate until Mr. Wesley's return allowed the (BM_____ to die a naturul death. Hus bani aud wife were sincerely attached to each other, but not often of tbe same opinion. ADDRRMoRR DKLITSBKl)OH VA1.IOU-* __*t_.__OS& lt/ Hie Mo*t Kev. Dr. (*_!__, Arc:,',ishop of Dublin. Dr. Walnh occupies au exceptionally important position Binung tho Irish Nati jnilitt lenders, not only on account of his distinguished oftku in tbe Church anti his tt_ratt__tl '-ualificatious, but also in coi.sri|utut e of the circuinstauc.9 a Mending his appointu cut to the arch dish ipric in 1M-45. He was tho _?__?__?* of an overwhelming in gorily of the irish clergy, und doubtless of the Irish icople likewise; but the final choice lay with ihe Ponton and it came to bo understood that the Kuglisti Government was making strenuous effort! nt ihe Vatican to prevent the selection of so prm.unci d a Home Kuler. Nothing u mo was needed to make bim a popular champiuu tu Ireland. Wi.rn his api'oiutuietii was at laat announced, alter an exciting period raf suspense, it was received with extravagant (lemoustiations of delight, as * Katioual triumph. The new prelate went to Brass. to bo conseacrated ; and on his return home he was met everywhere hy enthusiastic crowds, to wliom he spoke tre-.y npoa the agitating questions of tl day, with a pstnotic fervor that satisfied their sspirstions, and at the same time a discretion and moderation which went far to vindicate his appoint?ont. Ihe present volume, compiled from the reports of the Dublin Ireeiiutnft Journal, con? tains lite the narrative of his welcome, the addresses which he delivered iq various parts of the Kingdom, a number of his public letters, and sondrv other documents. A large ps.'t of the I lustier thus presented has no permanent mien st. ?nd the volume would have been much improved by its exclusion. Many of the utterances, boweier, un Home Utile, Land, Education, an 1 k'udreJ topics, have a seri tm* political bearing. TbosB-wbo sre interested in Ir--.li arlairs will be _l_,l to supple? ment the superheated rhetoric of paity conflict witb tbe reasoned opinions of a mau Jika tba An'hi.iBi.iio of Dublin. Foll, wera of Henry George in this country have cited the Archbishop of Dublin as rn advocat* of te scheme fag the natiouali-siiou of und. It needs a great de. j ef effrontery to mako such a claim, for, gs this rulnoie conclusively shows, Dr. Walsh has g-^ra than once repudiate,1 the project with -di_t._tion. On tie 17th ot* February, ltf&v, be addressed * letter tu Mr. Gladstone, lu the nama ?nd at the request of a body of Catholic Blshejs assembled at Dublin, who "substantially repre? sented the whole Irish episcopacy." In that latter he defined his theory of land reform, and it was practically the aame as Mr. Gladstone'! own. The right nf property in land was iecogni-Bd in the iullest possible manuer. ,-_i A delightful little book, perhaps more to be en joved by mature eyes and minds than by those of the little ones, is " Jack nnd the Beanstalk," by Hallam Tennyson, illustrated by Randolph Calde? ron (Macmillan & Co.) The illustrations are but .ketches in the much, having been among the last work done hy thc Artist, but th-y are full of humor? ous suggestion, and sometimes their very incompleteness adds to their effect, as for example in the sketch of the giant piirsuni- Jack and coming " near " to tbe fugitive. Hallam Tennyson's version of the fairy tale, io ponderous hexainotres, is a capital thing of its kind, and goes exceeding well with tbe illustra? tions, and the effect of the whole is not less pleas? ing than peculiar. Collectors will do well to possess themselves of the first ed tion of a quaint little book which is sure to bo eagerly aoutrht bercafter, not loss for il. oddities than for its merits. "Grandmother's Garden," published hy Messrs, A. C. McClurg o\ Co., of Chicano, is a small folio containing floral drawings reproduced in full-page photogravures in whioh nre inserted appropriate verses, after a fashion which is anything but com? mendable. Ol thc illustrations by Mary Cecilia .spaulding it may bo said that the drawing has a certain accuracy, but rho work, is stiff and labored and the reproductions convey little feeling of beauty.
