NEW PUBLICATION& THE PEOPLE'S CYCLOPEDIA. Three Yolanaoo. rhilllpt * Bunt: New-York and 8aa Frenehee. The issue ot the seventeenth edition of thi! publi? cation Indicates Its appreciation by the public The publishers. In announcing tke new edition, state that they have told 80,000 set* ol the work since Ito flrst Issue tu yearn ago, and teat the elghty-llfth thousand lt In press. "Tbe People's Cyclopedia" certainly de? serves all the .access lt has had. tor it lt a eenvenlent, comprehensive awl carefully prepared work. Con? densation to the limits of Intelligibility waa the fun? damental principle adopted, and it might easily, under less Judicious management, have Impaired the prac? tical usefulness of tbe compilation. But by securing the help of experienced writers end an editor the Beet proof of whose-fitness is the work Itself, a re? markable measure of success bas been reached In a difficult and ha_a?tyu? undertaking. What distin? guishes this cyclopedia from several works on e simi? lar plan is its superior discrimination. That it to lay, instead of reducing every art Iel* to lu lowest denomination as regards space. Judgment has been exercised In giving to matters of practical utility comparatively full treatment, and roon, lt made for these longer articles by compressing where fulness ls not a prime necessity. In tito third volume, In tko form ot appendices, a great amount of useful Information bas been given, generally in tables, and these appendices really eover almost everything that eau be thought of In the way of everyday subjects, from lists of pseudonyms to records of fast trotters and tables of crops, population, religions, eta. The work ls abundantly furnished with Rood maps and charts ot all kinds. It has been con icierticiusly brought down to the close of 1687 as re? gard* historical events. The mechanical part of the work is well dene. Tbe types employed are clear and clean cut, the paper ls stoat and white, the bind? ing substantial. There are,-of course, tome errors, wt, for instance, In the date of birth ascribed to Mr. Henry Watterson, of "The Courier-3ournel." In the lecdy of Ihe work he ls tald to bave been born in 1840, while In the Hst of pseudonyms 1832 ls given as the year of his birth. Such mistakes, however, cannot alway* be avoided in so extensive a publication, and lt must bo said for the ? People's Cyclopedia" that lt it, as a rule, edited with exceptional carefulness. As a compendium of Information on an Immense vari ety nf subjects, to arranged as to tie easily found by busy men, this publication Is certainly all that ls claimed for lt. flt-o pnblirartone.
