CHASGES AS TO FASTISG. ROMAN CATHOLICS IX THIS COUNTRY TO EAT MORI MEAT IN LENT. Various conflicting statements as to changes In the rules of the Roman Catholic f'hurch concerning fasting in Lent have been published from time to time. A well-informed priest in this city, who is familiar with the actual facts, ma?le the following ?talement yesterday to a Tribune reporter: The representations of the Am-srtcan ar?-hbishops to Pope Leo with regard to th?? different conditions Of climate In which Americans live from the con? ' ditlons in many parts of Europe fias resulted In a j temporary change in the '.aws of fasting, as far as Roman Catholic working-people are concerned. In Italy and France tastlna la s omparatlvelf eaay matter, owing to the climate and the habits ?if the people. Breakfast with the French an?! Ital? ians Constata Invariably of a roll an?i a cup of COffee, whereas it is a full meal In this country; and meat, which is the chief artl'le of foo?! with American working-people. Is rare'.y used by the Italians and French For the \m-rloan workman Lent was a time of **uffering, even though he was dispensed from the fast, a.? he could eat meat only once a day. an?! on Wednesdays and Frl?lays not at all. The archbishops have regularly presented th?-se facts to the Propaganda and other official.? In Rome, and have at various times secur-d ?lispensations of one kln.l or another. They did not succeed In getting what they wante?! until the grip began Its ravages, and the Roman oflVials had read I?elegate Batolll'* descriptions of the American win*ers. The Delegate has sternly observed ?the Italian diet for Lent, in spite of r??sultlng rheuma? tism and constant suffering from cold which goes beyond the Italian Imagination; but he has learned to pity the people who must live lr> Ameri? a for? ever, <.nd he has given aid in making the Roman officials understand the climat!? and laboring con ?lit ?ins here. It Is said that his ,lescrlptions of the American winter cave the Pope and his immediate advisers ?e-rere c ?Ms. as cold? ??? in Italy, while they were being read. Th<? result of his repre? sentations has been that a dispensation f?r ten years has been .??-.ned to the \merloan bishops, whii-h they can use as they see fit. According *?> this dispensation, which can be renewed at the end of ten y? ars. meat la allowed on all ?lavs of the year except Fridays. Ash Wednes? day, Wednesday and Saturday in Holy Week, and the day befor?- Christmas to all working-people, and to their entire households. They can use meat as , on any other day of the year, as often as they choose. The eld rule. w?i!ch prohibits meat and flsh at the same meal, remains In force. This practically abolishes what rem .ined of :he old fashioned Lent. an?l will have a telling effect on the domestic lish trade when Lent comes again. | In place of fasting and abstinence from meat, the P? ?n- ?lirects ;hat the people shall be urged to do some other pennance, such as giving up strong : drink or aiding the needy. The Archbishop of I Boston hai air? idy announced the dispensation to his prlesti snd people, and Its publication Is looked for in tliia diocese at an early <!a>. A VERDICT OF SOT GCILTT ORDERED. Recorder GofT yesterday instructed the jury In the eis?? of Charles Webber, Nathan Connors, Ma?irlce Connors and Charlee Dunn, who were being tried for manslaughter, to a quit the prisoners.
