Mr. Colqohoun i-eiTTroeea the serious englneer
Ing problems ot the canal to three. One of
these is the cut through what is called the Qreat
Dlvide, where a trench three mlles long Wlll
have to bo cut throufh voleanle rock at an aver
nge depth of 141 feet and 8 ntaxlmum deptb of
328 feet. Whlle more than uaual care has been
taken with horlngs to learn the character of tho
rock through whieh tl 8 excavatlon must be
made, Mr. Colquhoun arould double the precau
tions. From the borlngs that have been made
the lnfcrencc is that the rock is aolld anil unl
form. Under Buch condltlona the plan is to
make the cut wlth alrnoat perpendlcuutr aldea, as
was done with the Coiinth Canal in Oreece. But
unfortunatily the Corinth Canal waa damaged
by a slip ln lts almost uprlght ivalls. and ao the
author arguos that the englneera In Nlearagua
ahould take warnlng. H" even goea ao far aa

BOatal or Inclined meaauree, a tunnei would be
better and cheaper than an open cut. He limits
his tunnei. however, to a beadlng of 1-0 feet

called Ochoa. Here he finds that a thoroughly

Over two hundred years ago an attempt was made

result was fatal to the harbor, whlch has gradu
