NEW PUBLICATIONS. THE IDEAS OF A HISTORIAN. HISTORICAL BRIEFS. By James Schouler. With a Blographx Octavo, pr. 31?. Hodd. Mend & Co.. New-York MM, As early as lHTo Janii'8 Schouler resolved lo write a history e.f the Knited States from ITS."! to 1881, Fixe volumes covering this period np* peai.tl l>etxxe*en 1883 and 1881, He ia ROW en Itaijed upon Ihe- period of the Civil War While this xxork hats not plated Ita author in the high? est rank as a historian, li has given him an en? viable name, and it entitles him to speak xvith much authority upon hislorical suhjecti*. In thc volume under review, the strlklns; pas? sages In the different essays upon such subjects as "Historical Grouping," Spirit of Kesearch" and ilistorleal Industries" do not alxvays re? late especially to the topics under consideration. So xxe shall pick up the gems xvherexer xve find them. Emerson's Iheory xvas that history ls the rece.rd of the- warka of the universal mind. Of course this xvas a poetic conception. Mr.'Schoul cr'a more practical vicxv is that history is a Stream 8oWt**| onxxard, widening and branchinu In Ka flow. ? I?.iw n xv ard and onward, this im? petuous torrent of human life obeys its own law of gravitation." He* holds that the emly clear laxv Of history is that of motion Incessantly onward, and that if any ono winken tn make* himself fa? miliar xvith any particular, period one should not explore this groat Btrenm to its source-, but fol? low lt in its onxxard and doxxnxvard current. All xvho believe that historiography should al xxays ba treated as a literary art xviii xvelcome Professor Behouler's protest against the niotle-rn tendency to bring together many writers in the collal'tirnti.m of history. Ha recognizes that a vast xxork Uko H. ll. Bancroft's "Pacific States" may ba of gp-at value as a means of preserving records which might otherwise ba lost; but he correctly Insists that xx he re Hiiro are so many urtknown writers, th -re cannot be unity of sys? tem or careful method in the use of facts. The divided responsibilities aro like numerous un? fastened links?not xvorthless. yet not u chain. He lamonts that collectivism, which of late years has become so chai acteristic of trade and commerce, should Pe ext -nded to literary xxork. Been history-writing factories may have their place; for facts, like fruits and meats Ihat may be canned, ought not to ba allowed to go to waste. But neither the owners nor tho oper? atives In such a factory are entitled to the nam* t.f historians, nor ls the product likely to be history in the proper sense. A distinguish-d public man. who had recently written a popular but not very profitable biog? raphy, once remarked, xvith a smile, not of satis? faction: "I have concluded that the historian's ficctipatlon ls a most aristocratic anel expensive one." Dr. Schouler holds the same opinion; for "of all literary pursuits." ho says, "none on th** whole, appears set naturally allied to competent means and poo-i family. . . . Nor are the roxaltics from historical writings, hoxvever suc? cessful and popular, likely to remunerate one greatly, considering his aggregate outlay; but rather than In any enh meed pecuniary ease his rexvard must ba looked for In the distinguished comradeship of tho dead and of the living? In the satisfaction that he has performed exalted labors faithfully for th" good of his fellow-men. and found them In his oxvn day fairly appro? bated." Knoxvledge of the technique of any craft al? ways enables a man of broad mind to make a more precise estimate of the value of the product. Pfofessor Schouler says that ono must measure out his work with exactness, making careful es? timates, and xxork the huge materials into place, besides using his pencil with the dignity and grace of an artist. The historian should be an architect. For this reason, he counts Gibbon as the foremost among historians; as greater. In? deed, than Thucydides. Sallust, or any other of those classical writers who have so long boen held up for modern reverence. "In historical narrative." he maintains, "the greatest triumph cr-rislsts in traeiriK nit and delinpatlng with color and accuracy a variety of intricate influences which contribute to tho main result. An-J xx ho has done this so xvoll as the author of tho T>e cline and Fall of the Roman Empire.' that great? est of all historical themes, that most impressive and momentous of nil human events?" There is an amusing and amiable candor In our author's confession that he has been told that his oxvn style ls harsh, rough and swashbuckling, lt is not less diverting xvhen hf confldea in the reader that "there are other critics, equally CORI* 1 fte nt. xx ho have gone out of their xvay to com? mend this same historical composition as xvarm. xivid In Its coloring, lucid, epigrammatic anti 'in? tensely interesting ' "' Our oxvn opiniem ls that xve. could easily find sentences and paragraphs in Professor Si honiel's writings that would illus? trate all these adjectives, exe opt possibly ?swash? buckling." In fine prose there is a smoothness and cadence which the .ar feels even when the ?-ye merely hurries from line to lino?Just as we Imagine that xve hear the music of tba limpid stream as soon as wt see- its water. Her.- and there in eiur historian'! books one is annoyed by harsh-soundinir or Inappropriate xx ords. Jerky phrases, a sentiment or llgure that seems to ex ploda rathe-r than to unfold Itself gracefully. ?Writ'thcr this is due to deafness e.r lack eif care, or both, xxe need nol speculate. On tho other hand, thoro ls much force and expression in some of those rough-hewn blocks. There ls such a thing as being too confidential am! as being more e.f an example than erne max Intend: "Another worker may produce better so'.id be.oks than I have done, but lie xviii bardi] be moved to produce a greater number within the same space of time, or to pre-empt a wider range of research " We aro told, further, that in each case he has regularly contra, ted with his publishers to create a book. Instead of haxvk ing about its manuscript when completed; that he has always been permuted to hand his copy lo tho printers, xxithout submitting lt to any one for Inspection. "I have shown my manu? script to no one at all for criticism or approval; nor have I received suggestions in any volume, even as to literary style and expression, except upon printed sheets fr un the casual proof* r.-aeler, as the !?.,,k xxent finally from tha press." The sketch of Francis Parkman ls bl far the most picisini* essay in this volume, lt is pict* uresepue. appreciative a.-r.i graceful. The two papers on Polk's Diary and Ins Administration throw new light upem the character anel methods eif a President xvho has heri-teifore not been sufficiently praised for his good qualities, not adecjuate-ly condemned for hl? Iniquitous and subtle froheme to push Mexico Into xvar for the purpose e,f robbing her of territory.
