THE LOST HUMPHREY BILLS.
? STATEMENT FTUVM MAYOR HARRISON OF CHI?
CAGO.
Springfield, May 13.- Mayor Harrison of Chicago
has made the following statement concerning tho
action of the Legislature In refusing to extend for
fifty years the franchise* of the street railway com?
panies:
"The defeat of the Humphrey bills l?*aves the ex?
tension of the traction companies' franchises where
it properly belongs?in the hands of the municipal
authorities nf Chicago. In my opinion, speaking
as an Individual, the next step should be to bring
the extension of the franchises before the proper
civic authorities, where. If they appear with clean
hands, offering the municipality ad?quate com?
pensation, the companies will recelvo Just treat?
ment.
"Chicago is a fair city, an honest city, a gen?
erous city. Its people believe neither in destruc?
tion nor conCsi-ntion. Their desire Is to build up
and not to tear down, to anchor and not to cast
adrift. We need the iissistunce of outs!?!?* capital
to help ?level,.;, our industries, and outside capital
will flow into our coffers only upon the guarantee
of absolute fall treatment. The ateadytng <>f the
value?, of the traction companies' stocks will bring
stability to tho value of all our local stocks and
bonds.
"Our fight has been mainly for the principle of
home rule. We have won the battle. It now re
matns for us to show mir ability to protect Die
interests of the cftlsena of Chicago, and at the same
time accord justue to the corporation."
