GREEK LITERATURE. AN HISTORICAL AND CRITICAL ESSAY. A HISTORY OF AHCIKNT GREEK LITER? ATURE- Rv Qllbert Murray. DuodwdBM, PS? xvll. ?_??. I>. Appl.t ?n ??. Co. This Initial volume In Mr. Q0SSS*S "Literatures of the World" serie? promises WStl fOI the thor? oughness of the undertaking. In common with the thousand and one volumes which have been I-ublished In behalf of university extension, Mr. Murray's work directs its appeal to the general reader. But It la to he markedly distinguished from most auch popularizations by the fact that It make3 no concession in tone to any desire for cheap method* of getting cultures In both Its scholarship and Its stvle It commands respect. The author 1? so versed In Greek llter..ture and archaeology that the traditional Interpretations of the p?dagogues nnd compend-makers. big and little, he safely Ignores, or el*??, in Ills own ur? bane way. dismisses with a passing jest. Some of his history he bases upon evidence discovered only within the past decade; in all of his crit? icism he Is conscious of the most modern schol? arship. His volume is no mere textbook; It Is Individual even where It is most conservative it appeals with original for?"?? to the reader. From Mr. Murray's manner of expression one might reasonably guess him a Grecian, for he has the art?which one is often tempted to think confined to QroctSM Ol being modern In tone and familiar In style without the suggestion of self-assertion. lie makes the ancient Greeks contemporaries, and this he does without vul? garizing or in any marked degree hollttling thorn. His thought, pervaded as it Is by a clear common-sense. Is made luminous by constant modern allusion and frequent flashes of wit and humor. Apparently with his modern English audience in mind, he characterizes Xenophoa as "a healthy minded man, religious through and through; a good sportsman and soldier; a g?i???l husband and father." With a deztsrous wit quite as distinctively modern he characterizes Soora tes's father as one "apt to drop Into destitution, without minding it." (if each great writer, ??f more than ore minor Character, he makes a sane, plausible pic turo, sometimes In a sentence, sometimes In a paragraph, but always vividly and with a human touch. Let him speak for MlS-Slf In his characterization of Pindar, or. to he more accurate in a portion of It: "Often In thinking over the best pieces of Pindar?the majesti.? organ-playing, the grave, strong magi?? of langua??e, the lightning flashes of half-revealed mystery-one wonders why this man Is not counted the greatest poet that ever lived, why he has not done more, mattered more. The answer, perhaps, is that he was a DO? ? and nothing mote. He thought In music; ho loved to Uve among greftt ami beautiful images Heracles, Achilles, Perseus, JSaon, tbe daughters of Cadmus. When any part of his beloved saga repelled his moral sensitiveness, he glided away from It, cartful not to express scepticism, care Mi also not to speak evil of ?? god. He loved poetry and music, especially his own. As a mat? ter of fact, there was DO poetry in the world like his, and when Other people sang they jarred on blm, he confesses, 'like crows.' " By his very animation Mr. Murary occasional? ly raises a suspicion that his historic imagination may at times have proved too strong for his ecl entlflc accuracy. TH his style, less full of art than Mr. Andrew Lang's, Is more convincing, his general attitude, less guided by flxed theory than Professor Mahnffy's. is much more natural. and certainly neither Of these critics ran be sai?! in any serious degree to mislead. Nor would it be easy to verify any suspicion of Mr. Murray's soundness. His translations -one wishes, by the way. that they had been accompanied by th?? original 'Ir?-? k though they can stand compari? son with the rest of his style, both for vigor and naturalness, are not on that account any the 1-ss faith!ul. Fir his historical statements he has what ail "ars to be conclusive evidence, and for his critic;.1 Ideas the attestation of their own common-sense. In imitation of most manuals, the author practically ?doses his review with the dea'h of Demosthenes, for to cover the Alex? andrine an?! Roman perioda, which follow? gome five bundled years in all?he appimds but a brief summary of thirty pages. With this ex? ception, however?an exception sanctioned un fortunatelv by tradition, his survey of Greek literature, when the limitations of his space are considered, teems surprisingly complete?the more remarkable for its compactness that It is not a eompend of literal and external facts, but a gracefully conni?? led series Of carefully consid? ered, original and penetrating criticisms. jnetrnction.
