THE DAYS OPERATIONS IN STOCKS.
Ftock market values were weak In the greater
part cf the day, with net losses in most Issues at
the close. In the early trading marked strength
¦was shown In a few thares, Rock Island. Bur
ttneten. Delaware ana Hudson and the preferred
pteel Ftorkf bring noteworthy examrl's. The
Ilaet named securities advanced on the expecta
tion that under the new combination of pteel and
Iron companies the holders of the preference
Issues of exlstlnp companies would be in a bet
ter position than they are nt • • s>-nT According
to reports put out yesterday. The new Bftaal com
bination will have a capitalization of over H.«
fi00.000.000, on whlrh it Is estimated that earn
ings will Fhom- from 10 to 15 per cent en the
common stock, the returns of the various com
panies In 1000 bring used as a basis. The last
year brought prosperity to the Iron and steel
trade, but all years will not witness the same
industrial activity, and hence it follows that the
receipts of llmiO are not a safe puide for invest
!ment purchases of the common shares of the. big
combinations. The preferred stocks and bonds
ought to appeal to investors who like Industrial
k (securities, as th> re is little doubt that earnings
j will always be large enough to meet the Interest
on these issues. The preferred steel chares and
most of the aar early market strong features
maintained a firm tendency until the close, al
though ending under their best prices, while
elsewhere in the list prices worked toward a
lower level without Important recoveries. In
the midday trading liquidation by commission
house customers was followed by active raids
ngainst prices in all parts of the list. Many
stop orders were reached, but declines were
not extensive.
Conservative Interests In Wall Street are not
inclined to v/orry over the heavy expansion in
liabilities of the local banks And the falling off
In referve holdings. Indeed, a further fralu In
loans and deposits is expected this week. Loans
are not growing on account of -•..ok market
Fpecu'.ation, end the actual position of the banks
Is not being weakened by the operations that
are responsible for the great increase in the
loan and deposit items of the associated banks.
Since January 1 loans have increased SIIS.ICV-
S<"X>, hut the greater part of this amount is based
upon securities that have been taken out of the
market and which will probably never be aviil
able for speculative purposes again. Most of
the current loans are -connected with the rail
road and industrial deals mow being perfected,
and the collateral against the loans represents
securities bought for the purpose of control.
These Issues will gradually be replaced in the
market by new securities, as. for Instance, the
540.000.OK) Union Pacific collateral trust bonds
Issued for the purchase of the controlling South
ern Pacific stock. Investors will buy the new
securities, and loans made to inane* the deal
will be paid off. A year ago the reserve of the
local banks fell from $24.000.<:m0 on February
24 to about pMtfjlt on March 7. Reserve
above 1.-gal requirements may for a time be
wiped cut this year, but such a situation will
not reflect an unfavorable position of affairs at
this cert The banks hold a large amount of
money, a.nd their credit facilities may be ex
tended much further without cause for uneasi
ness on the part of depositors. When the pros
perous growth of a big country reduces hank
reserves there is ro reason for pessimism.
Any Important decline In stocks due to the
possibility of calling of stuck market loans will
undoubtedly be taken advantage of by careful
buyers to Increase their lines of securities. In
yesterday's market there were many disap
pointed traders who had hoped for a sharp
break In prices. And there were a number of
rich sold out bulls who decided to renew their
Interest In the market without waiting for a
fleelded setback. The market was irregular at
the close, and predictions of lower prices were
freely made. Last hour trading, however, re
flected an exhaustion of tt>e selling power and
resistance against the pressure of the bear ele
ment. Prlc»s responded easily to the demand
from the shorts, and sharp rallies were made in
many stocks. The money market showed no
¦nr-w features, save in the foreign exchange de
partment, in which a decline in sterling rates
took place. This country has large credits
abroad, and local bankers will not hesitate to
draw on Euro] for gold if money market neces-
Fltle* require such action.
