THK PAYS OPERATION'S IN STOCKS.
The stock market opened yesterday with con
siderable activity In the I'nited States Steel
issues and thf stocks of the granger and Pa
cific roads. Initial prices as a rule were ma
terially above the closing figures of Saturday,
and further gains were soon accomplished. Sub
rerjuently the volume of trading contracted,
but the better part of the gain in values was
retained. The market closed quiet, but firm.
Buying of the United States Steel stocks was
induced by the information that the steel strike
was nearly at an end. It tvas said that a formal
announcement to this f-ffect would soon be made.
A demand for the granger and Pacific stocks
was created by the more favorable crop news.
In other respects the situation was satisfac
tory. Money was in abundant supply at fairly
low rates. Considerable Klondike gold will be
received at New-York this week, and the in
terior movement of mon^y is stili in. favor of this
centre.
The strike of the steel workers was generally
considered in the financial community as fore
doomed to failure. It was plainly the intention
from the outset of the companies not to sur
rer.der or parley with the leaders of the men,
but rather to let the strike wear ltfelf out,
which, apparently, it has done. The fact that
there were no sympathetic strikes Indicated
to the men that they, like the striking firemen
In the anthracite coal fields, sroold have to de
pend on themselves alone in their contest. It
was fortunate for the men, and for th" com
panies as well, that the ;:trik^ was free Crom
disorder and destruction, for thus the opening
of negotiations for the resumption of work was
not impeded by acrimony. The settlement of
the Ft»e] strike in FU^h a peaceful fashion wiil
have a tendency probably to encourage over
tures for an adjustment of tho differences that
exist in other quarters. In short, the outlook Is
good for a practically complete disappearance
of unrest among workingmen in the near
future.
The copious rains in the corn belt were late
in coming, but they prevented disaster. There
are no trustworthy figures as to the extent of
the damage to the corn crop. Possibly it has
been Irreparably injured to the extent of .'JO
per cent. In such case there stil] ¦uiH be a
vast amount of corn to be marketed at high
prices and to be transported. Spring wheat has
escaped almost unscathed, and the total yield
of wheat will l>e very large. Furthermore, it
•wii! bring a good price, owing to the heavy
shortage in the European outturn. Accordingly.
the wheat crop will, while paying the farmer.*
handsomely for its cultivation, afford the rail
roads and other carrying lin-s a liberal ton
nage. The deficiency in corn, it appears likely,
¦will be made up in other ways. About the only
sufferers from the curtaik-d corn production
grin be the farmers whose fields have been
•withered and the individual railroads traversing
the sections where the harm has been done.
