n OIL DESTROYS AND SAVES. .BURNING. IT DRIVES MEN FROM SHIP SCATTERED. IT MAKES CALM PATH TO RESCUE. Thr^e men. Captain E. G. Parker, of Bucks port, Me.: nip second mate. Edward S. Harding, and th» rteward. all of the fourniasted schooner James W. Fitch. 1.063 tons, which was burned in longitude 2*« and north latitude 27 on Decem ber 18, arrived here yesterday on the steamer Ponce, from San Juan. They told a story of ad venture that would make a good foundation for a melodrama. With their vessel and its cargo of eleven thousand ten-gallon cans of kerosene, fifty-seven thousand feet of green lumber and four thousand shooks and fittings aflame from item to stern, and the seas towering in a fash • ion that threatened destruction to any small boat that might be launched, by means of the use of oil and the opportune arrival of a Ger man bark, the Hedvig. the entire crew was prov identially saved. "The schooner sailed Croon this port." said Captain Parker yesterday, "on Thanksgiving Day for Rosario, Argentine Republic. On ne cember 15 the vessel left the variable winds of the Temperate Zone for the trades of the tropics, and ran into an electric disturbance. For three days severe thunder storms were en countered. The iightning. the thunder, the rain and the wind made the sea for those three days a wild and awesome spectacle. At 12 o'clock on December IS ■ *'" welcome rays of sunshine Etruggled through the clouds. But the clouds quickly closed over this sight. Hardly had the cheering sunshine disappeared when the en gineer of the donkey engine forward and the Eteward came running aft. They said that smoke was comirg ur around the fore and main jn&s;. r "I ordered a hole cut In the galley. The flames flared up. »nd it ■ ■';' I be seen that there was a • tremendous fire raging below. In ten minutes •we hPd a stream from the pump on it, but this eeerr.ed only to aKe*ra*'»t* the fire. The gale was blowing so fiercely that no Email boat could have lived in it. but Ihe lone boat and the gig were swung astern I remembered that I had teen two vessels about twenty miles astern, and ■wore ship, thinking to meet one of them. At 1 o'clock we sighted the hark Hedvlg Those on the Hedvig ra-v that v. •• were afire, and stood by We had already l (gun to put some pro visions :n*.-> our bojits, but. feeling certain now that "we should be saved, we took them out and put Into each boat a can of fish oil. If it h.T d not been for the lumber the decks would probably have been blown up. 2 expected more. The tire burned the halliard*, and the sails slid down the masts, to be burned as they fell I »aa th* last man to leave the vessel ■ I tried to find Gypsy, the Cuban dog. bo fore i U ft the schooner, but could not find her. In the comu.ior. she probably got lost I was able to bring away my chronometer, but not my ° X a' R we rowed away from the Fitch we spread oil on the water, and in the trail of it we man aged to reach the Hedvig. Those on the Hedvig also put over some oil when we sot near her. In the hour it took us to get to the vessel twelve distinct showers fell. Our boats were hoisted aboard, and when we were off Ponce, tor the Hedvig was bound for Pensacola. we got int. them and rowed into port, the Hedvig continuing on her way. All the crew got work there, ex cept those who came hers." BITE FOB HOSPITAL BOUGHT. MATERNITY INSTITUTION TO BE IN EAST j SIXTIETH-ST.-WOnK TO BE AMONG EAST SIDE TOOK. The home of the Manhattan Maternity Hospital and Dispensary which v.as incorporated at Albany on March 18 last, will be on the plot now known as No. ZT. to 333 East Sixticth-st. The property has been bought by the board of directors of the in stitution from the American Ice Company through dharles H. Easton & Co. It was sold for $33,000. The size of the plot Is 100 by 100 feet. It is now ■meant. The name of the man who gave the money to start the institution has not yet been learned. It has been known for a long time, however, that he has been interested for some years in the ques tion of the betterment of East Side conditions, and that he not only gave the directors money to buy the property just purchased, but also to build a home for the institution on the premises and an endowment fund, so that the hospital would be entirely independent pf other contributions. Daniel S. Lamont, Cornelius VanuVrbilt, Frank U. Polk. Henry B. Thompson, William Thome, Moses Taylor and Percy K. Pyne are directors of the hospital. Mr. Taylor is the president of the board. It was rumored yesterday that Dr. Russell Bellamy was to be one of the head surgeons of the hospital. Dr. Bellamy declined to discuss this re port Last night at his home. A training school l' r nurses, to be under the man agement cf the hospital, may be built on part of the plot. The principal work of the institution will be outdoors. In this respect it will differ from most of the hospitals, public or private, in this city. Ili will have a lan corps of physicians and nurses, i and they will be principally occupied in visiting the h< :n<"s nf the sick ana sec-inK that they are well cared for there if pos.-ible, instead of having them taken to the hospital. The hospital will not contain many beds, and these will be especially for the use of emergency cases. Most of the physicians and irarref connected with the hospital will live in the building and it is thought that the average number of workers having rooms there will exceed the num ber of expected that sround for the hospital will be It is exiM-cte'l that ground for the hospital will be broken in the near future, and that the building.
