10 NEW PUBLICATIONS v RfOK BT DR MIN'OT J SAVAOK amWmnlijr ■* - * -. v THE PASSING AND THK PERMANENT IN P.ELIGION. By Mlnot .1 SavaK«». D. D. Or tavo, pp. 53fi. G. P. Putnam'. Son* 1 In Ma treatment of the great essentials of • reiiKion Dr. Savage sifts such things as cannot survive the impact' of scientific, historical and critical study from the great fundamental truths, and gives uf a clearer view of "those things that cannot be shaken."' He carefully dis tinguishes between Religion and The logy, "the theory of religion." Science, he asserts, "ha? h»>d plenty of warfare with theology." but h*» protest? that there has been no warfare between fcience and religion. He define* religion as •'Man's eternal search for the secret of life." We discusses in this book "Religions and Religion." •Gods and God." 'Hells." "Heavens," "Sav <n:jn»." The Church." 'Prayer" and "Worship." Oae of the strongest chapter.* is that on "Sav iours," and while leading up to the Saviour, the Xazarene, he says: Humanity is poor, and suffering for the want *-f a million »h:ng!= that can never be attained AcUhout ihe control of the frees of production more completely than we have 'been able to do yet. So the creators of wealth must take their places among the saviours of men. Those who fcfive delved into the secrets of earth and ex plored heavens— the?e. if thy have forgotten re ligion, philanthropy— no matter what else they have done or not done — if they have helped men discover the truth, so far they are among the ■world's saviours. His first chapter on "Religions" has in it much ; that reminds the reader of Ingersoll's state • tnent. "God is man made," but instead of pro ducing ■ shudder as of blasphemy. Dr. Savage i reduces his study of the religions of the peo • ples cf all ages to a most devout recognition of Cod. His power. His eternity, His love. ■ Many cobwebs are brushed away and many standards set up on truer foundations. In the chapter on Heavens he says that people have always been conscious that life did not meet their ideals and that for some reason, either their own fault or some one's else, there were Inequalities. So there lias sprung up as natural ly as flowers or graf-s grow in the spring a be 1 lief that somehow, pomewr* re, these inequalities would 'be equalised— that people who deserve to Buffer would suffer, and those who should be happy would be. With this well accepted and not at ali brilliant hypothesis, the author shows the heaven of the early races; of the Indian— .quoting Pope's well known "Lo! the poor Ind ian, whose untutored mind sees God in clouds. •or hears Him In th.- wind," which ends with the couplet, '"But thinks admitted to that equal sky. ' His faithful dog shall bear him company" — of '■ the Orientals, the Mahometans, the Greeks, anil j so on down to the little girl who was told that i •lie might have ■.. piano in heaven, as it was \ what her soul longed for— the little girl over ; whom Elizabeth Stuart Phelps raised such a . mighty discussion as to the rationality of ad mitting harp? into heaven, and not pianos, . which so many more people would be nble to en- Joy. Dr. Savage is never Hippant, as this would seem to Indicate. Ho seriously argues for a heaven which will satisfy longings and desires— which will round out the life begun here and perfect the soul, saying': 1 belif-ve that h< iven >\i!l find free room and for .ill 'h . tnd noblest in us. and 'not a man. woman contrib titfd to the sw«-. - - the beauty. the glory, the healt ifting of human life In this world but will rind an pie scope and room for n thousand tiiiie.< grander contribution to the growth and development of the universe ny» r I In Am discussion •.: prayer the author re marks: "If we < ou!d a© umplisb restilis mere breathing i! »roukl result in tho ■ t th.> world. It would put a pre mium on tagJnes* ;M:d Incapacity. If a farmer -■bould say. I will n<.t cultivate my crips. I will ■n the f- :;c-e uml ask God to do it; if :in -Mould not Lake pains to build his : am to pass over the prayers of the friends rs. would you not see the shal p of this idea of prayer." Then follows a ii!i=<~us<=iori of the proper use of prayer, 'he need f or it in the worKt The ■ -* rf-ligion he leaves behind come* ui"-n permanent truths which nr n • .i in a praise offensive to no one. SHELLEY'S ANCESTRY. SIR' JOHN IAWKWOOD, THE GREAT CAP- B^ TAIN OF THE WHITE COMPANY. K^j WAS IN THE LINE. BYRON THE DESCENDANT OF THE POET-KING JAMES OF SCOTLAND. From Notes and Queries. Although no respecter of pedigrees, yet Shelley was proud of his supposed relationship to Sir ■ "Philip Sidney; but the connection must have been spiritual rather than physical, for he was mistaken in his pious beliei that the authentic -blood of Astrophel flowed in his veins. His grandfather, Sir Bysshe Shelley, had won ("eloped with," Medwin says) two heiresses in succession. The first, Mary Catherine Michell. .was the poet's grandmother; the second, Eliza beth Jane Sidney Perry, ancestress of Lord d» L'lsle and Dudley, was the descendant of 'HIT Philip's younger brother, Robert Sidney. Ear] of ester. Shelley was. however, the direct descendant 'of John Shcllie, M. P. for Rye In the first quar ; tfr of the fifteenth century, by his wife Beatrix, the daughter of the famous Sir John Hawkwood <Acuto). Called 'by Hallam "the first real gen oral of modern times ' Hawkwood was captain of the White Company, which fought for the Viw-ontl of Milan. Although his bones lie, prob al'ly, in his ancestral church at Bible H«eding bam. Essex. the counterfeit presentment of the Sivat captain in his armor as he lived may be •seen to-day in Paolo L'ccello's fresco, now at the west end of the Duomo of Florence. '"'..-Another ancestor of the poet, Edward Shelley, of Worminßhurst date the property of the convent of Sion), grandson of the above John and Beatrix, was one of the four Masters of the | Kf'usehold to Henry VIII, Edward VI and Queen Mary. He was buried in the chancel of Wonnlnghurst Church, Sussex, in l.V>4, with his wife Joan Iden. Her father. Paul Iden ("Pawle Vden"), in civilian costume, with Agnes his wife and one daughter, are represented on brasses in the south chapel of Penshurst Church. Kent. The date of Paul's death is given by Hainee as 1514. Readers of Shakespeare will remember the name of Iden. In "'1 Henry VI," Act IV, scene x, Alexander Iden Flay* thf» notorious Jack Cade. Hasted, in his "History of Kent," says: ! "The Idens were a family of great antiquity and good estate about Iden, in the county of Sussex, and Rolveden in this county, and in them it continued down to Alexander Iden, who re elded here in the twenty-eighth year of K. Henry VI. the latter half of which year he was Sheriff of this county. being appointed to that office on the death of William Crowmer, esq., who had been put to death by the rebel Cade .and his followers." And elsewhere he adds: "Jack Cade. deserted by his followers, con realed himself in the woods near this place IHothneld], belonging to Ripley Manor, in .\V©Btwell, soon after which he was discovered >**y Alexander Id?n . . as some pay. In a field belonging to that manor In WestweU parish. but by others in a field of this parish, still named from that circumstance Jack Cade's field." . Holinshed. the chronicler, records this event as taking place at Hothneld <or Heathfield), Sus j sex. . Iden married the widow of his predeces sor—miscalled by Shakespeare, following Hall. J ..Sir 'James Cromer— the daughter of that Lord \ Treasurer Say who was also murdered by the ! rebels. Subsequently appointed Governor of Rochester Castle. But it is pos sible that Shelley's sympathies would have lain rather with the rebel Cade than with his re spectable Iden and Crowmer ancestors. An earlier poet v as closely allied to characters even more warlike: Edmund Waller was not only a kinsman of the Parliamentary General Sir William Waller, but also cousin to John Hampden. and, by marriage, a connection of Cromwell. Some have thought that Shakespeare himself was related to John Hampden: but in spite of heroic efforts, the Shakespearian pedi gree still lies seething in the crucible. Byron, through his mother, was descended from that great poet-king James I of Scotland, who wrote "The Kingis Quair," and whose foul murder Is so beautifully chronicled in Rossetti's ballad of "The King's Tragedy." William Cowper (also through his mother) claimed descent from an earlier poet, the great Dean of St. Paul's, John Donne; and Donne again had an interesting pedigree, being grandson to old John Heywood. the epigrammatist, whose wife (Elizabeth Ras tall) was granddaughter of Elizabeth More, sis ter of the martyred Sir Thomas More.
