Material advances were even made In some issues. It was soon apparent, however, that the degree of buoyancy which ruled on Wednesday was not likely to he experienced in the day's dealings. The early reaction was slight, and near the noon hour there was something of a rally. In the afternoon, however, pretty general profit taking: resulted in declines in many of the issues In which speculation had been most active of late. The developments at Denver on Wednesday m connection with the proposed annual meeting of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company caused some uneasiness apparently among the holders of the common stock, and on heavy selling: it reacted to 7.".. 7^ per cent below the hieh price for the day. The day closed with a net loss of 7 per cent- It is not unlikely that the losses sustained by reason of the sharp declines of the last few days in Colorado Fuel led to selling of other issues in which a reasonable profit could be obtained. Undoubtedly recent pur chasers of Louisville and Nashville were satis fied with the sharp advance made in this stock in the last few days, and decided to part with th«ir holdings. It is also probably true that among the highly speculative interests there was some disappointment over the fact that no announcement was made early in the day re garding the final disposition of this property. The net loss In Louisville and Nashville for the day was 3 per cent on transactions of about S4«VK> shares. Nashville. Chattanooga and St. Louis declined sympathetically to the extent of 314 per cent. The other declines in the list, while in excess of the advances, were hardly more than fractional for the most active stocks. Denver and Rio Grande common led the list In point of activity, beinpr dealt in to the extent of more than I<mM««> shares. In the early deal ings the stock displayed considerable strength, but closed with a net loss of 1 Per cent. The anthracite coal shares were active and higher in the early trading. Reading was much more In demand than on Wednesday. Ontario and Western was again active, and showed a further advance, ending with a net gain of % per cent. The operators once more stated that there was no change in the situation so far as they were concerned. Western Union, with the exception of Colorado Fuel and Iron, led the industrial list with respect to activity, the total dealings being f.-MKiO shares. This stock enjoyed a net gain of 1 per cent. American Telephone and Telegraph, on comparatively light dealings, advanced 2 per cent. Rumors were again in circulation of a coming combination of the principal telegraph companies. The United States Steel stocks were fractionally lower at the close, while Sloss- Sheffield advanced 3^> per cent, and closed at the highest figure for the day. Tennessee Coal and Iron sold off 1 per cent. The stock market closed weak In the main, at pretty near the lowest prices for the day. When the market began to show a yielding tendency the bearish element endeavored to convey the osln-.on that a serious decline in prices was about to be experienced; but that nothing of the kind developed during the day the records of the transactions show. It was pointed out that money had already begun to go to the interior, and that soon the local money market would be much higher. As a matter of fact, the only shipment that has come to light bo far is $100,000 to Cincinnati. On the other hand, money from interior points is being lent freely in this market. Undoubtedly there ■was considerable buying on Wednesday by wild speculators, who assumed that a few hours after Mr. Morgan's arrival at his office all the vari ous questions that have been awaiting his action would be settled. On what they were pleased to call disappointment over the absence of an announcement on any of these matters they sold stocks; hence much of the decline in prices. The reaction was in order, and wel comed by conservative interests, and was not due to any unfavorable feature in the general tituatlon. THE DAYS OPERATIONS IN BONDS. GOVERNMKNT BONDS -Market firm.
