THE PAYS OPERATIONS IN STOCKS.
ThP movement of values In yesterdays Ftock
market reflected active buying for the account
rf ?uhFtantial market interests and for com
mission house traders. Short contracts made on
Saturday in the expectation of a decline on
Monday were in many issues covered at a loss.
In the greater part of the day prices moved
toward a higher level, with a number of net
advances at the close. especUlly heavy gains
betas shown by the local traction shares, Colo
rado Fuel and Iron, •!,, Eastern trunk line la-
Fues and the Rock Island stocks. In the early
afternoon dealings ■ sharp buying movement
developed in Manhattan carrying the prico to
the highest figure reached in the current move
ment. All the other local traction share? ad
vanced in sympathy with the rise in Manhat
tan, while throuKhout the list active buying was
f-ncouraged by the aggressive strength shown
by the storks just named. There were no news
developments regarding the Manhattan Rail
v.-ay Company, but further positive statements
were made In various circles regarding the pos-
BibfUty of the purchase of the elevated system
by the subway company. While it is probable
that the transportation business In New-York
City will eventually be controlled by one com
pany, it seems easier to believe that the in
,, - r^-= identified •with the Manhattan company
win absorb the stock holdings of the other com
panies than thai the subway company will be
the purchaser of the elevated. It Is not at all
"ikelv that the Goulds have parted with their
control of Manhattan; Indeed, it is more than
probable that the Goulds have Increased their
holdings, and that in conjunction with the New-
York Central and Pennsylvania Railroad inter
ests they will in the future be the chief owners
<if the New- York street railway companies, both
«hove and under ground.
Buying of the Rock Island shares was a prom
inent feature of the day's trading. The com
mon and preferred enjoyed marked Improve
ment on a large volume of business, purchases
bf-ing for the account of interests Identified with
the property, and in the case of the preferred
for the account of investors. The preferred
ptock apparently is rapidly moving into in
vestors' boxes, where it will doubtless remain
for many years to come. In the early dealings
there were s onn- efforts made to depress values.
but beyond minor reactions from the advances
n-.ade at the opening no declines of Importance
were recorded. The professional element went
h"me on Saturday in 1 bearish' frame of mind,
owing to what it was pleased to call an unfa
vorable bank statement. While it li true that
th*» bank statement did not show an especially
h^avy reduction in loans, the flgurei presented
nevertheless no reason for uneasiness over the
monetary situation. Reserve above legal re
quirements showed a comfortable increase, mak
ing the total reserve heavier than generally
r»-cord<*d at this period of the year. There is
much bearish talk regarding the money mar
ket, and it is apparent that a few speculative
Wall Street interests are nut disposed to en
courage bull speculation in .securities at this
period. At the end of the year money rates
may rule temporarily higher, owing to prepara
tions for the January interest and dividend dis
bursements. Meanwhile, however, there ought
to be no difficulty in securing accommodation.
There is an ample supply of time money availa
ble for the market, and there are indications of
cheaper rates for ssixty to ninety day loans.
Reports received yesterday from the West
phowed no let up in the volume of railway
traffic business. The enormous amount of
business that is now being handled by the va
rious Western railroads is reflected in the aver
age outgo of loaded cars over any one road.
Take, for instance, the Burlington. This com
pany's daily movement of cars from Chicago
«lone Is running from nine hundred bo eleven
hundred. Such a heavy business is causing a re
markable car famine in all parts of the country,
find .as a consequence the car building com
panies are receiving rush orders for new equip
ment.
Railroad men believe that the shipment of
holiday goods this year will be larger than ever
before on record, owing to the remaikably pros
perous condition of the people in the West and
Southwest, as well as In other parts of the
country. The increase in traffic has naturally
caused an increase in the «ost of operation, but
it will not be long- bef ere thi? higher cost will
bf> offset by an advance in freight rates. Earn
ings are enormous at present, and it may readi
ly be seen what remarkable results may be ac
complished when transportation rates are
hijrher.
In the late dealings prices reacted from the
best, and in Manhattan a decline of 5 points
from th" highest was recorded, although the
final figure showed a net gain of 2 points.
Strength in Colorado Fuel and Iron was helped
by the interest shown In the company by George
J. Gould. The interests of the stockholders will
"v carefully guarded if Mr Gould obtains con
trol of the property.
