10 THE FINANCIAL MARKETS. tcTtrnr us couxtrvs industries xot reflected IX BUSINESS ON STOCK EXCHANGE. *o Occasion. Bouaxr. for Uneasiness-Railroad Earnings Hear*, and Money Rates Easy. WALL STREET SITUATION. The activity that prevails 5n the country's Industries is not reflected la the course of busi ness on the Stork Exchange, either In the vol ume of dealings or !n the movement of values. Commission heus< trading is practically at ■ rtandstKl as far as operations for lon* account are concerned. Holders of stocks bought at a higher level, while conlident of better prices ]ate^ on In the rear, are forced in MM cases to throw over their securities owing to the m pend of emming stork? or; margins and to the necessity of finding ready cash for other pur ' pose There are also some holders who are relllng- their long stork and taking a position on the Fhort side of the market, on the theory that if prices will not advance they will de cline. Operations of this character were suc cessful last v-eek, as quotations moved toward _ lower range In the greater part of the time. Various rwison* ar<- set forth purporting to ex "lain the current disappointing condition of af fairs in the stock market, and although it is admitted that conditions governing the actual *rorth of securities are growing stronger, it is maintained in same quarter.- that there is still enough uncertainty over the probable course of the money market in the next few month* to restrict 11 1 Ml also that the people who ordinarily might be. counted on to buy securi ties ft* loaded with stocks which show at present figures substantial losses from the origrtzal purchase prices. It is argued further more that the heavy liquidation In securities in the last fight months compelled the stronger Interests V> bar ™ore stock than they now care to carry, and that they are slowly celling ° D ail available ■«■ Hill their operations serv ing to keep prices from enjoying a sustained advance. If the process at liquidation has not yet run its course Che market trill ho stronger in pro portion -when the movement is over, and unless In the mean time radical adverse developments ehouli arise In the money and industrial situa tions prices will enjoy as much activity and ad-. vcr.ee as they are row sufferfns dulness and depression- Bear operators In stocks have been favored vrttr ■ number of factors of pass ing importance. They have taken advantage of every unfavorable happening to hammer values and not satisfied with the real they have called Into service the fairy tale and folk lore stories of the Street to assist them in their campaign against prices. In many well in formed quarters it is believed that the out stpnC'.Tigr short interest Is much larger than Ehovn fay surface indications. Moreover, it is thought that the Wall Street atmosphere is -rowing dark enough to suggest ■ speedy break la the clouds. An old Wall Street maxim ad vises the purchase of stocks when everything is bice and gloomy In speculative circle*, when, as some say. depression is the chief asset of th» Street and great fear among traders the principal characteristic of Stock Exchange cir cles When all the bear arguments, including the uncertainty regarding the crop?, are ex hausted the fact remains BMt stocks are sell ing, in the greater number of cases, on a healthful investment basis and much under the level that generally accompanies periods 01 prosperity in the country's industries. The ".Ve'l Street situation will doubtless worry many people for a time, but there's no occasion for uneasiness over Its future. The labor outlook Is growing more promising. Th* tendency of prices In the iron and steel _a_e to move to a more healthful level m In crease ihe home and foreign demand for the output of American furnaces, while it will de i r^-as*. the volume of imports, which in the nine month* ended March 31 amounted in value to g35.G9i;572. as compared with 517.901.072 in the -sme time in the preceding year. Notwith standing the high price? in iron and steel, and the disposition in some quarters to wait for Jower Quotations, pig iron production is enor mous, amounting in April to about 1.650.000 tons, while, according to "The Iron Age." the output for May will exceed that of April, as furnaces showed on May 1 a capacity of 353.59< tons a v.eek. against :'.7«.r,7«:. tons on April 1. or a total for the month of 1.700,000 ten*. These figures furnish eloquent evidence *>f the pros perity now prevailing in the Iron and steel trade, while they ouarht to silence at or.cc the pessi mistic talk h^ard in seme poorly informed qunr ters regarding conditions In thi« line of industry. If further evidence is desired showing that the trrde is still active, it is only necessary to refer to the net profits of tli* United States Steel Cor poration for March, amounting to $9,1*00.000. or {412.000 more than recently estimated. Va!J Btreet has Jook«d with disfavor on the riotous speculation on the Cotton Exchange, and the declining: tendency that developed at the close of the week was. therefore, received with considerable satisfaction. The decline whicn started on Friday v.iil doubtless »** carried further, as quotations af at a fictitious level, while the technical position of cotton speculation invites lower Beures. A return of cotton prices ;o a normal level wii! be Hollowed by a renewal <f the export demand, which was checked ,:i April, owing to thp rising tendency of the mar ket while it will exert a favorable influence on sentiment and business :n local drygoods circles. Notwithstanding the (ailing off in cotton ex ports in April, the outward movement at general rne-cr<andise jr. the month was heavier than In any corresponding month on record, with the ex ception of April. 1901. The excess ox exports over imports amounted in value to $1!1.5*27.4C.5, making for the four months of the calendar year an excess of $M9.433£_ 9. as compared with »n excess in the same time last year of $139. 126.14&- Imports were again heavy in April. showing an iticrease in value of above $16,000. r«t*<i over the same month in IWJ. but a decrease of nearly $9,000,000 from March. For the ten months of the fiscal year exports have been heavier than in any UM i esyonding time, except in ISWIj reaching the enormous total of $L223. 74<'.(Jf»3. against import? in the same time to the value cf $864.720«859. or an excess of exports in vaUie of $359.019.«44*. In the period under re view imports increased :n value £110.204.082, while export!! increased S:i3.r»>v?.27G. In view of the fact that exports of corn showed such a heavy decrease Croxn the preceding year, owing to the corn crop failure "1 11*01, the record of the export trace thrice last July is truly marvellous. Kaiiroad earnings are heavy throughout the country. Crop reports Ftiil favor a record break ing winter wheat yield, and current weather conditions ore favorable to early planted corn and spring wheat. Money rates are easy and banters 0o *.ot share In stock market traders* vaeasiJicss over the situation. Gold exports re duce our obligations abroad and improve the chance? of in. ports d the metal Jr: the fall; For eign capital is reeking investment, a reflection of wt:oh was presented in the enormous Bub scriptions to the r.ev.- Transvaal loan, and local foreign backers report ar. Increased Inquiry fror.i Europe for good American bond?. AH the stock market needs is the development of an active buying power. Thi? will doubtless come 5n tfce course of the next few months.
