Senator to Quit the Turf and Sell His Stable. Senator Patrick H. McCarren. the Democratic representative in the State Senate irom the sugar refinery district of WHliamsburg. announced his intention yesterday at the Sheep* head Bay rare track of retiring from the turf. Subsequent to the Senator's announcement it wa« given out that his entire stable, consisting of about twelve horses, wouli be sold at auction next Saturday in the sales paddock at Sheepshead Bay. A few days ago the Senator 1 filly. Ocean Tide, ran in the Great Fillies Stake, worth about J20.0W. and. although it seemed to a preat majority of the spectators that ehe had won. the race was finally given to August Belmont's Octogon filly BelJame. It was said at the tim« that Senator McCarren wa* keenly disappointed, and that he did not tlifnk th* judges had place.l the runners correctly. It was also intimated at this time that the decision of the judees meant a loss to him. Including the value of the stake, of $lt>>,U<X>. When it became known yesterday that he was to retire, the reason for it was assigned to the de feat of Ocean Tide. The Senator, however, was quirk to deny this report and said emphatically that the result of that race- had nothing whatever to do with his retirement. "Other men." he said, "have retired. Why shouldn't I? My business. anyway, demands more of my time." Senator McCarren has been racing on the East ern turf for a number of years, and has won some valuable stakes. He has in Ocean Tide one of the beat fillies of the year. This spring »he won the Astoria, an owners' sweepstakes, and has been one of the most consistent two-year-olds of the season. The politician is ore of the principal own ers of the new racing plant at Jamaica. Some of the horses to be sold on Saturday are Brooklyn. Mack*y D»y»r. Tower. Ocean Tide. Equity and Miss Si K«-nna. Sept. —Sons* royal racing was seen at Charter Oak Park to-day by the ten thousand people In attendant;*. It was all confined, however, to the Charter Oak Stake. In which there was a field of twelve nurses. Billy Buck, owned by E. E. Smathers. took the race In straight heats. But each heat was a race, the battle never waned and Smathera"* bay gel urn: was compelled to us* every Inch of sf*ed he possessed to a :eo nplish what he di.l. Walnut Hall and Hawthorne pushed him so hard that whipping finishes characterised evtry heat, the leaders being: n**ok and neck a* they passed under th? wire In each heat the first horse received SI.SOo and the second $300. Th« re maining JI.CKO was then divided according to the summary at the end or the third heat. JI.OCO join* to the first horse. $500 to th*» second. JGOO to the third and 120 to the fourth. Th» final division therefore was: Billy Buck. >?.:»; Walnut Hall. ».9W; Hawthorne. 11.100. and Swift. »"«. In the first heat Walnut Hall had the pole and he Ml the lead all the way round. In the stretch Billy Buck, which was trailing closely, let out a, kink, and for the last 100 yards the horses raced neck and neck.. As they passed under the wire th« finish was so close that none could name the win ner, although a goodly number were of the opinion that It was either Walnut Hall's race ox a tie. The decision of the Judges, however, was different, and did not meet with general favor. In the next heat the same two horses fought It out. Billy Buck having the advantage of the pole and winning by half a length In an exciting finish. When the horses lined up for the final heat there was 50 much Jockeying that every driver was threatened with a fine of $100 before they got away. From the word it was a light between Hawthorne and the favorite. Billy Buck was headed twice, being In third o«aee at the half, but G*«Ta demonstrated his generalship by avoiding pockets, so that when the stretch was reached he was In a position to fight It out with Hawthorne and Swift, which were leading. As the wire was being reached whips w»re wielded with a ven geance and the spectators were on their feet, yell* insr vociferously for their favorites. At the distance flag It looked like Hawthorne's race, but in th# final dash Billy Buck made another rally and swept under the wire a winner by a nose. His time in the first heat of the race Is the- record for the Char ter Oak Stake. 2:07» 4 .
