Tha Zoological So ciety tried to get Mr. Whitney's herd of mule deer. but, for the present, the herd and five moose will remain undisturbed. The buffalo ranges, at The Bronx Park, contain ing in all about twenty acres, have been thor oughly overhauled. The main range has been divided by a fence running east and west through Its centre, which will have the effect of keeping a herd cf about fifteen buffaloes near the main walks, easily visible to visitor*. Instead of out of sight an heretofore. Arrangements will be made at once for the shipment of the herd of buffaloes to the park. Each animal will be crated separate ly and it is estimated that the herd will mike about four carloads. It Is expected that the first shipment of the h<>rd will reach this city In about two works, nnd the rest about October 1. They Frighten Pedestrians on the Brooklyn Bridge, However. Pedestrians on the promenade at the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge were startled last ev ening when they say a wagonload of wild and vicious looking animals In the roadway. The ani mals were racking about with mere or less life like motion, and the horse drawing them was it self prancing about in fright. Some of the more timid of the bridge walkers made haste t-> get away from the spectacle. It turned out that the animals— were lions, a tiger, a leopard and a big black cat — were stuffed and were bring carted from a Klatbush-ave. fur rier's store in Brooklyn. The wagon had halted, owing to repairs he mi; made to the car tracks. A red touring automobile and Its noisy machinery frightened the horse and caused Its prancing. A patrolman of the bridge squad seized th* bridle of the uneasy horse, led It along, and perhaps averted a runaway. BERNARDSVILLE HORSE SHOW OPENS. Walter P. Sept. 11.— A tralnload of passengers was saved from an accident last night by the presence of mind of W. F. Clark, of this place, ond Charles Low. of Boston. The. two men rushed down the track and gave warning signals which stopped the Gilt Edge express from New-York for Boston, In time to prevent it from crashing Into wreckage caused by a collision of freight trains. Both men were near when the freight trains came together, and. realizing that the fast ex press was several minutes overdue, they hurried to save it from destruction. They had gone le*3 than 200 rods down the track when the train came in sight, but by vigorously swaying their lanterns they attracted the engineer's attention, and the train was brought to a standstill only a few feet from the pile of freight cars. In recognition of the efforts of the two men the passengers raised $156. which will be divided be tween them. The train was subsequently sent to Boston over another route. The freight wreck probably resulted from a mis- Interpretation of signals. One freight, containing a largo number of valuable horses, was In collision with another, demolishing four car? and injuring three men. One of th«m. Matthew Hatch, of Prov idence, Is not expected to live. He was taken to a New-London hospital in a special train. Traffic In both directions was delayed nearly seven hours. PROHIBITIONISTS' TROUBLE. Anbury Park. Sept. 11.— It is understood in po l:tlcal circles that legally the Prohibition party lias ceased to exist in this county. The new law requires a party, in order to have legal recogni tion, to cast 5 per cent of the vote of a county at an election for Governor. As the Prohibition party did not cast that percentage last year, it cannot nominate by convention and must resort to peti tion. The same conditions are believed to exist in every county in the State.
