Total transactions in yesterday's stock market amounted to only r.2..">."S shares, with the heav iest dealings in Amalgamated Copper. St. Paul. Brooklyn Itanld Transit, the Erie shares. Na tional Lead, Ontario & Western. Reading. Union and Southern Pacific, and United States Steel preferred. In these issues price changes amounted to unimportant fractions, while throughout the list final quotations presented Insignificant differences from the preceding day. The heaviest operations were in Reading, which closed at a small net gain. Indeed, the transac tions In this security supplied over one-quarter of the total dealings In all stocks. There was no news development affecting this security, but there appeared to be accumulation for the ac count of prominent interests, one firm alone tak ing over 10,000 shares. The price advanced to 45 and a fraction, hut at that level there was enough profit taking to prevent a further ad vance in the quotation. Favorable develop ments of th« day had no effect upon prices, the encouraging government report on cotton and the relatively good bank statement falling to create speculative interest In securities. The cotton report shows an increase In the acreage of nearly 10 per cent, and a condition of S3 per cent, against 74 per cent a year ago. According to these figures this year's yield of cotton ought to be large, and, in expectation of a harvest of euch a character, prices for the staple on the Cotton Exchange In this city and New Orleans are tending toward a lower level. Although stocks were extremely dull, sentl xr.cnt in financial circles appeared to be moder ately bullish, and in well informed quarters the opinion was freely expressed that the current Inactivity in speculation would not be followel by nggressive operations on the short side of the market. It is not possible to say that there vil! be an advance In securities In the course of the BMrt few weeks or throughout the sum mer months, but the greater number of compe tent observers in the Street do not h«ei'a:e to predict activity and higher prices later on In the year. And at the moment they are will ing to go on record with a most optimistic view regarding the bond market. which they believe %'ill show an expanding tendency from now on. with a good demand for all classes of railway mortgage issues. There la a vast fund of Idle money in this country, and the chances are that It will se^k employment In bonds. If the bond market becomes active the stock market eventu ally will follow in its train. Wall Street will be able to survive a dull summer in speculation, and despite the various absurd digests of the bus' ■ ■=s situation as set forth by i>erip]p who are i irly informed regarding unJerlylng^condi tlcns, it will be found on a careful examination of the Industrial and linancial position of the United States that the country Is not going to the dogs, and that there is no element in the Fituation that warrants pessimism among the financial and business men of the nation. While the weekly exhibit of the associated basks presented a further increase In re ■ervc above legal requirements, the show- Ing was not as encouraging as the es timates which were made on Friday, this being due, however, to the peculiarities of the system which the Clearing House <-miiloys in compiling its statement of holdings. Although the estimated movement of currency in the •week indicated a gain of nearly 110,000,000 In* cash, bank figures showed an Increase of only B&OOMttM). Loans decreased $3,918,200, and as a result of all changes th<- reserve above legal requirements increased $'_*,o(»Sr>.V>, to £H1.7»i0,- S7">, nhich compares with £1.773,650 at the came time a year ago and l/_'^."i..">7."i In 1902. Cash holdings of the Clearing House banks, compared with a. year ago, show an increase of $77, "<•*». while for the same time loans show an Increase of (121,427jQ0L In the last three weeks loans have ilc 1 1 risi il (42363.400. Bank conditions at this centre are eminently satis factory. Money market rates doubtless will re main at a cheap level throughout the summer, »nd if further exports of gold should b<? made the effect on the country's supply of the metal will not be Important.
