I From Town and Country. • Some five or fix years ago a Frenchman with an inventive turn of mind paw the possibilities of plac . ing a light motor, such as Is used In an automobile. Into a boat. He succeeded In a crude sort of fash lon and went scooting down the river Seine. The plan was B»-i«ed upon by others. Boon more of these power boats appeared, and races between them be came the rage In Paris. For want of a better name, and because they were propelled by motors like those used on automobiles, they were dubbed "auto" boats, and the term has stuck to them. [ 'J*he«» first Krerj' h productions were hardly more i than light skiffs fitted with small motors, and made comparatively slow time. Hut the sjje--d possibili ties Involved wt re quickly realized, and the result Is - the hleb powered, fast motor boats of to-day. The rport of "auto" boat racing soon spread to England, and thence to America. wh«re Its rise In ' popularity has tieen nothing short of phenomenal, until it is the fad <>f the season. Rich men, b!a»« with speeding automobiles on land, have taken to i.':e "auto ' l)'>ut racing with alacrity. I.iut yp.ir HNtll very fnsl mot'ir boats of the n<rw type w< re Been In UM around New- York, and races between Uii-m \v«r!e frequent, but j.'itiihiK very definite was |IfnS«l as to th.ir real or comparative speed. "Auto" boats, however, will not be used solely for racln* purposes. Their hlßh *j>eed, coupled with their llgnt construction, makes them peculiarly suit able for a number of other purposes. Many men with summer homes up the Hudson or on Lous Island Sound can K«t into fast "auto" boats and, after enioyinjt :i pleax.int and exhilarating- voyage, run land in Nc-w-York In less than an hour. The fa. -l that no license is required to run one of these ri.-w style gasolene engine boats makes them espe cially attractive to people who like to run their own craft. Automobiles have mail* thousands of people familiar with the manscwient of explosion motors, such as "auto" boats nearly all have, by means of which the motor, steering »ear and. In fact, every detail of th* management are controlled by one person. QUEEN MARY'S HARP 13 SOLD. From The London Mall. . The Argentine Republic and other South American countries are preparing for the erec tion of lonc-dlstancft high-power stations.
