STOCK MARKET OPERATIONS.
Strength marked the course of prices in the
Sweater part of the day, but operations as ■ rule
represented the transactions of the various
pool* and cliques that are workinj? for higher
prices rather than a wldpsprt-ad public demand
for Fecuritles Commission houses were not
active factors, although they reported a dispo
sition on the part of a certain class of custom
ers to buy Ptock3 at pr«»vailinß prices. The
bull party in Wai! Street has advanced values
to a point that has encouraged the small out
sider to risk his money in the market with the
confident expectation that quotations will con
tinue to advance and that a fortune lies In store
for the man who has the courage of his convic
tions. The ordinary public speculator bases his
convictions on the movement of the ticker rather
than en conditions effecting the speculative and
Intrinsic worth of securities, and in a market
such as that now prevailing the advancing; ten
dency of prices convinces the Email trader that
purchases tnaOe at this level will result in enor
iTiOUii profits. Perhaps the present lull cam
paign has not reached its limit, but the increas
ing willingness of the outsider to take the *>e
curitlcs which the Insiders offer for sale en
cb-raEes the belief that a good sized reaction
will soon, develop. The upward movement of
the last few SMCki has bc*?n accompanied by a
large distribution of stocks and the creation of
an extended bull account, which Includes a
large number of weakly margined holdings. It
«M therefore be seen that the technical position
of the market Is much weaker in respect to the
long. side of speculation than It was a few
weeks ago.
• The return from abroad of the head of the so
called Harrlman properties encouraged specula
tive buying of Union and Southern Pacific, both
of which enjoyed substantial price improvement.
Wall 'Street gossip continues to predict a price
x oX 125 for Union Pacific on the current move
ment, but the conservative people in the financial
community believe that this Issue is selling for
all It !s. worth at its current quotation. If
Southern Pacific stock should soon receive a
dividend. Union Pacific's income would be ma
terially increased, while the stock of the latter
company might be placed on a 5 per cent basis.
It hardly appears probable, however, that tne
management of. the Harriman properties will de
cide to declare a dividend on Southern Pacific
In the Immediate future, owing to the fact that
further heavy expenditures must be made on
Improvements before the company will reach a
position that will insure th* maintenance of divi
dends after they have once been declared. The
directors of Southern Pacific are proceeding
along Intelligent lines in the development of the
property, and It Is rot likely that they will
swerve from thrir emm because of the re
quest from speculators that the stock be placed
on a dividend basis. United States Steel pre
ferred failed to exhibit the strength that marked
Us course in the preceding days of the week,
owing no doubt to heavy realizing sales, but
the common made a :;ew high record price for
the year, selling above 13. This issue is a long
time speculative proposition, and it will require
■Teat courage on the part of people who have
Idle money to buy it un the expectation of its
return to the dividend class. American Smelt-
Jag enjoyed an advance of over 1 point, and
General Electric was up over 4 points on a
movement that represented nothing but specu
lative operation*.
The heavy falling off in the earnings of the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company for the month
of July r\ as not a factor In the stock market,
but It cr*a£el an unfavorable impression in
circles where aetfani attention is being given to
the traffic situation In this country. Coincident
with the publication of the Pennsylvania's r<v
I>9rt, announcement came from Philadelphia
that the o?TVer« of the Pennsylvania Railroad
were extremely optimistic over the outlook for
business In the next twelve months, and that
they expected a large enough traffic to offset the
reduced business since January 1. On the lines
( «j*at of Fit tabu re cross earnings for July de
cr«-aaed $1,514,300 and net earnings decreased
£4V,.200. making from January 1 a total de
create In cross of $4,973,900 and in net a de
crease of .*2.lKU,K><'>, comparison belug made
with the same month a year ago. On the lines
west of Plttshurg the company was able to show
an -pease In net earnings for July owing to a
large reduction in operating expenses, but gross
r*~ elpts » were ' $323.;><N» smaller than In July,
)003. The total decrease In n*t earrings on the
line* east and west of Plttsburg In the first
yen months of the present calendar year is
M.005.200.- ■
In the afternoon dealinjrs the entire list ex
hibited great strength, noteworthy advances be
fn*T ■ recorded by Chicago and Northwestern,
which gained nearly 3 points; Reading, which
advanced over 2 points on heavy transactions;
Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Metropoli
tan, the last named enjoying an advance of
nearly .1 per cent. The unfavorable annual re
port of th« Metropolitan company had no effect
on the price of the stock, the poor earnings be
losT offset. In the minds of speculators, by the
possibility of a general consolidation of the
street . railway companies In this city. The
heavy dialings and sharp advance Jn Reading

CONDITION OF TRADE.
"Dna'a Review" sa< s:
Confidence increases each week as a larger pro
portion of the agricultural yield is placed beyond
th«» roach of Injury and Industrial undertakings
nre les* interrupted by labor controversies. It is
not to be expected thnt the business world will
suddenly abandon its conservative attitude, pur
chases being still restricted largely to such needs
n.s are clearly discerned, but there is evidence of a
•trowing disposition to provide for more remote re
quirements. In many lines, particularly drysoflds,
stocks have been reduced much below normal, and
fall shipments are expanding In a healthy manner.
Distribution of merchandise Is providing the rail
ways with a largo, tonnage, preparations are being
mail" to handle the enormous crops, and the gross
earnings of all railway! reporting for three weeks
of Ausrust Hhow a gain of 1.4 per cert over the
same time last year. ■ Foreign commerce for the
last week nt thin port wan smaller than a year ago,
exports decreasing $307.-17. while Imports fell $901.
i'a. and. this tendency Is largely responsible for the
Treasury deficit in August, customs receipts falling
about 53.{M0.000 behind those of tho same month last
year. Money Is abundant however, transfers to
the Interior producing no stringency, and the
Hverago of the rixty most active railway securi
ties rose above J3o for the. first time this year.
Bunk exchanges at New- York for the week were
16.9 per cent larger than In 1903. and at other lead-
Ing citl«»s there wm a loss of 1.5 per cent.
Erratic changes have again occurred in the lead
ing farm staples In response 1 to weather reports
and the attitude of consumers. Wheat was ad
vanced by new low crop estimates and depressed
by sninll purchases for domestic mills and export.
N^t changes become smaller as the season ad
vances and the highest prices of th* year, attained
a few weeks ago. have not recurred. The new
crop Is coming freely to market, receipts of- 5.770

which was about a normal season. Interior Ar
rivals of 4.100.630 bushels of corn exceed the 3.073.f153
last year, and Atlantic coast shipments of 519.24S
bushels compare with 624.306 in 1993. Cotton pro
vided much Irregularity, with a fair net advance
on reductions of the crop estimate by conservative
authorities to about 11.40<>.<X)0 bales. This would
surpass any preceding yield, but is not expected to
make' up .for all the low. stocks of goods. Yet It
may be considered as a certainty that normal con
sumption • will not. return at present prices. Pro
tracted meetings discussing th« matter of prices
for steel products tended to restrict business, and
wholesome conditions cannot be restored 'until
there. Ib less uncertainty en this point.
"Bradstreet's" says:
Further expansion in fall trade is ioted at lead
ing- centres, and 'tho:. last week in August has seen
the largest business done since the. opening- of th.
reason. Crops have: m-iil<- .fair progreßs. Warmer
weather would have been more favorable for corn;

OUTSIDE SECTTRITIES.
The market for outside securities showed a •»».
eral Improvement ovr-r the heavy depression of
Thursday. A good buying movement appeared
shortly after the opening, ••■ prices gradually
worked upward, and In many Instances the heavy
losses sustained on the previous day were entirely
wiped out* There was little interruption to the
course of the market, although trading was on a
somewhat smaller seal*, ©-wing to the forthcoming
triple holiday. Seaboard stocks took the lead both
as to strength and activity. The common rose l«s
per cer.t. while the preferred gained 2% per cent.
The bonds were strong at a slight advance. Amer
ican Can preferred developed considerable activity
and rasa nearly 1 per cent with a slight recession.
Northern Securities was a fraction higher. South
ern Pacific preferred, when issued, gained >-i per
cent. Central Foundry was higher. Manhattan
Transit was up Vi per cent. Intorborough Kapld
Transit fell nearly 1 per cent on moderate offer-
Ings. In copper Issues prices showed slight re
