Transactions In yesterday's stock market were heavy in volume on a movement of values which, after early irregularity, tended In the di rection of higher prices in tha greater number of Issues. Commission houses were moderately he-ivy buyers, while the substantial interests who are identified with the speculation in the leading securities were actively engaged on ths bull Bide of the account, and, as a consequence, a long list of not advances was recorded at tho elope, with tho greatest strength in Amalga mated Copper, Canadian Paclflo. Northwest, Colorado Fuel and .Iron, Consolidated Gas. Illi nois Central, Louisville and Nashville, Norfolk and Western. People's Oas, United States Steel common and some of the Inactive securities, such as International Paper, Federal Smelting, Rubber Goods preferred and Westltighouse. While the dealings in United States Steel pre ferred wf-re again heavy In volume, pront taking Mlea were large enough to prevent the stock from enjoying a net gain for the day, and the same character of transactions in the sinking fund bonds also resulted in depressing the price of those issues. Other exceptions to the up ward movement were found In Union Pacific shares, Southern Pacific, Chicago Great West ern, Atchison, General Electric and Tennessee Coal and Iron. In these stocks small net looses were recorded, but the heaviness was not consid ered significant of a coming general downward course of prices. Naturally aom« of the high priced shares are being sold under cover of strength in the low priced issues. Striking ad vances in Illinois Central and Colorado Fuel and Iron were not accompanied by news devel opments affecting the properties, but In the case of Illinois Central a report was circulated that the dividend on the stock would be advanced to a 7 per cent basis. Although United States Steel preferred closed at a small net loss the common stock was strong and active, both In the London and local market, closing in New- York at a ret gain of nearly 2 per cent. Many speculators have been taking their profits in the preferred, transferring their Interests to the common, which is slated, according to wall in formed gossip, to sell at a price of 40. There la a confident fueling in "Wall Street circles that the price named will be reached on the current movement, notwithstanding the belief that the resumption of dividends will not take place for a long time to come. The copper shares were again hi excellent demand on tho Stock Ex ch&nge, while on tho curb Montreal and Boston wiis taken in large amounts at advancing prices. The statistical position of the copper trade la Singly strong, and speculative activity in the cupper shares is warranted. The Interesting feature of the monetary situ ation at the moment Is the weakening tendency in sterling exchange at this centre and the ad vance In Ptorllng at Paris and Berlin, move ments which apparently Indicate that gold ex ports are over for the present. Of courte, It cannot be definitely stated that further im portant shipments of the precious metal will not be made, as conditions in the foreign ex change market may change again In favor of foreign centres, ns far hb this market is con cerned, but there is, however, no good reason to believe that the requirements of Rerlin and Paris In the rest of the year will be bo urgent as to force further material shipments of gold from New- York. In the last four weeks up ward of $1f>,000,000 In gold has been sent from this country to Europe, the result of which is now reflected In an easier market for loans in the foreign capitals and the maintenance of the Pank of England's minimum rate of discount at 3 per cent. In the recent period of gold exports Intelligent observers of the finan cial situation were not at all alarmed over the foreign demand on this centre for the metal, as they appreciated the fact that the outward movement was the outcome of legitimate finan cial conditions, which involve the movement of money toward the centre where it can be most profitably employed. When money is cheap In New-York and there is a good demand for ac commouatlon abroad gold will leave these shores, and a proper understanding of the reason why the metal flows abroad will relieve timid In vestors of uneasiness. In yesterday's market call loans ruled at .'s'j per ci»nt, while there was no material change in time money rates. It Is generally believed that last week's ad vance In money will he maintained throughout the month, while It Is thought likely that even higher rates will be recorded at the end of the year. Incident to the preparations for the large January interest and dlvtd ml disbursements. Many encouraging reports were received yes terday from officers of the Western railroads, lnilii-ating a. healthful growth in traffic receipts nnd nr.'.tt confidence on thy part of railway managers over the outlook for big results in the coming calendar rear. There is rio boom, but traffic Ih enjoying a steady growth. Senti ment In business circles is so cheerful that rail road men naturally are looking forward to In creased traffic receipts, on the theory that cheer ful sentiment makes good business returns. Al though net earnings continue somewhat under the expectations of railway offlrers, the per centage of decrease In the neater numl instances is growing smaller, mid. according to t:..- \ l-ivs of Interests identified with the vari ous prop* rttes, net results on all lines wiil soon begin to show marked improvement. At the moment decreases In net, as a rule, are caused by increased expenses, but the mere fact that railway managers are willing to Increase their <-n«lltures Indicates great confidence on their part In the future of the railroad business. 80 for roads reporting for October make an un favorable showing as compared with the same period a year ago, returns for seventeen roads showing a decrease In gross of $411,000 and a decrease in net of $75.°>,000, making from July 1 a decrease in not of $1.11*0.200. or nearly 4 per cent, as compared with the same time a year ago. The most unfavorable report for the month was made by the Atchison system, which showed a large failing off both in gross and net receipts. A large system, such as the Atchison. can Buffer several bad months in the year without having its general results for the twelve months present an unfavorable showing. The Atchison system runs through some of the most productive States in the Union. Its lines extending from Chicago to San Francisco, and eventually it ought to prove one of the biggest money earners in the country. BOND MARKET TRADING. GOVERNMENT BONDS.— Market Bteady.
