STOCK MARKET OPERATIONS.
"While sharp price changes marked the course
of trading- In a few Issues, the general move
ment of values exhibited great irregularity, with
fluctuations confined within narrow limits. In
the early dealings the majority of shares pre
sented reactions from the closing of the preced
ing day, but declines were not Important, and
In many instances they were recovered before
the end of business. The appearance of the
market, however, suggested a stale condition of
epculatlon, a reflection of which was presented
In the failure of the general list in the forenoon
trading In respond to the active upward moves
In a few Issues* notably Sugar Refining. Toledo.
Et. Louis and Western. Pacific Mail. United
States Steel common and New-York Central.
In these shares advances of one point and above
■were recorded. Pacific Mall enjoying a maximum
advance of over 4 per cent. Sugar Refining over
2 per c«nt and Jtew-York Central over 2 per
cent. Strength In Pacific Mail was not due to
news developments affecting the property, but
to the covering of a large short Interest that
•was forced to bid high for the stock to settle
Its contracts. Mr. Lawaon had a few more re
marks in yesterday's papers on this Issue and
on Amalgamated Copper, but the latter stocli
failed to erjoy improvement, despite the bullish
advice of the Boston operator. As a matter of
fact, there appears little need for Mr. Lawson
or any one else to tell why the copper shares
oupht to sell higher, as the daily prints are well
Burp"cd with actual news regarding- th* copper
situation, Indicating a remarkably strong posi
tion of the copper trade and foreshadowing big
earnings by all the copper companies in th"
next twelve months, with better quotations for
the various cocper securities. In yesterday's
curb market Montreal »rd Boston was again a
feature. The general improvement in the cop
per trade end the increasing earnings of the
companies naturally attract attention to the
Montreal and Boston shares, as they do to other :
copper securities.
In the late afternoon dealings In the greater
Dumber of 1k«-\. enjoyed improvement, closing ',
pricts being at about the best of the day. In
the active list, however, the strength In the final
trading was noi large enough to offset In all
Issues earlier declines, but net losses hen re
corded were not Important, being confined as a
rule to Sr.sijrr.iftcanl fractions, the chief excej)
tlors being supplied by Colorado Fuel. Illinois
Cer.tral and Louisville and Nashville.' in which
last quotations showed net declines of over 1
per Dent Heavy buying of New- York Central.
Pennsylvania, People's Gas and Metropolitan
■was a feature of the last hour transactions.
There was no explanation far the activity In
0 *" shares, the advance apparently being due"
to aggressive operations by well informed Bpecu
lat!v» Interests, who ay have discovered the
existence cf a large short Interest in the stocks.
Wall Street sentiment at the close of business
was somewhat mixed, but the frreater number
of market followers appeared to be quite confi
dent that further Improvement In values would
be recorded, their ideas being based on the be
lief that there has not yet been a general dls
trlf';t!or. of stocks and on the expectation that
there will be no di-turbanoe In the money mar
ket In the balance of the year. At the moment
there is little probability of further exports of
cold, as the foreign demand for the metal ap
parently has been (Rationed Regarding the in
ternational trade nituat:on. It is interesting to
note that. according to th» detailed statement of
exports for October, shipments of manufactured
articles !n th- month Increased in value upward
of $10,000,000. as compared with the same month
last year, the -a.i n more than offsetting the fall
lrjr off In exports of agricultural products. For
the ten months ended October ?,1 exports of
manufactures from the United States Increased
In value over J04.000.C00. while there was a de
crease In the shipment* of food products of over
$71,000,000.

FOREIGN TRADING.— Foreign houses dealt in
over 70,000 shares In the local market, of which
over 65.0 0 ■ hares were sales. In London there were
few important changes In prices, while there wad
no special change In discount rates, although the
demand for money was active. The fortnightly aet
tiement passed off smoothly, but tho contango rate
was strong. Exchange at Continental centres on
London was favorable to the British capital.
CANADIAN PACIFIC'S EARNINGS.— October
earnings of the Canadian Pacific show an increase
In gross of 1255.691 and a decrease In net of $57,913.
the falling off in net being due to an increase in
operating expenses of J345.C11. Aa the company la
earning much more than its dividend rat*, it feel 9
Justilled in making large expenditures from earn
ings on Its. property, especially as gross earnings
are increasing at an average rate of about 175.000
a week. The Arcola branch of Canadian Pacific
has been formally opened to traffic and will carry
light business this fall nr.d winter. It is 113 miles
long from Regina to Arcola. From a financial
standpoint, the significant thing about this line is
that It is merely a representative. The company
is opening new counties year after year. It builds,
at 114.000 a mile or so. lines into traffic that will
give the main line a thousand-mile haul at good
rates, and lines that will maintain themselves at
the same time. The main line haul on the grain
from this branch, for instance, la bo much of ■
bonus for Canadian Pacific. This is a sample of
the factors that enable this company, after four
years of Increased earnings year by year, to con
tinue to pile up 'records of weekly increases.

GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC.
The Grand Trunk Pacific, which is being financed
In part by Speyer & Co., of this city. Is to be built
in two divisions, tho eastern from Moncton, N. B.
to Winnipeg, I.SIX) miles, and the western, from
Winnipeg to the Pacific. I.S'V) miles. Rails are to
be standard seventy-five and eighty pound steel.
Contract speclllcations call for a line "on a stand
ard not inferior to the train line of the Grand
Trunk from Montreal to Toronto." The western
division Is to be completed by 1311. The eastern
division ■will be built by the Canadian govern
ment under Grand Trunk suj>ervlslon The western
division v. ill be built by Grand Trunk Pacific under
government supervision. Wh»n completed, the en
tire line will be operated by Grand Trunk. Th»
eastern division will be leased for fifty years on a
rental equal to 3 per cent of cost, and at the en.l
of that time the government may extend the lease
or operate the raid Itself. At aJI times Grand Trunk
Pacific concedes a rl^ht of way te other systems,
as the government dictates.
Cost is the important thine. To keep it down th*
government is lending Its credit liberally. On the
astern division fifty-year 3 per cent government
debentures will be Issued. Grand Trunk has noth
ing to do with, this financing. The Grand Trunk
Pacific will hive nothing to do with the eastern
division until it Is ready for operation. After that
date for seven years no rental will be paid, this
seven years' Interest being 1 paid by the government
as a bonus.
The western division, on which bonds are now be
ing sold, is divided into two sections, one prairie,
the other mountain. On the prairie section the
government will guarantee 3 per cent bonds up to
To per cent of cost, not to exceed $13,000 a mile.
For the remainder of the cost the Grand Trunk
Railway will K'i'irantce Grand Trunk Pacific sec
ond mortgage bonds. In care of default the first
3s will get 75 pet cent and the second bond
£5 per cent of net revenue. On the mountain divi
sion the 1,-I'verr.ment will pay the interest on bonds
up to 75 per cent of cost, not stipulated as to amount,
for th< first seven yean. Thereafter for three
years the company will be liable, but no foreclos
ure will bo possible, the accumulated debt being
capitalized an.l repaid to the government in 3 per
cent bonds. After the ten years the bonds will bo
company bonds guaranteed by the government ab
solutely. It appears that all western division bonds
are to be dated on the completion of the property,
equipped and ready for operation. When this is
done th« lirsf mortgage debt will be 3 per c»nt
guaranteed l>o:rls. The second mortgaere, represent
ing 1 additional cost, may bear any interest. Of the
stock, $30,000,000 may be preferred and £5,000.0:0
common. The latter goes to Grand Trunk, which
will thus control the new property.
The .first step in the carrying out of this tremen
dous project has been th© enlisting of Speyer Broth
ers to interest the Bntisfh Investment world. Th*
project has behind it the record of success on Ca
nadian Pacific, whose, unguaranteed bends enjoy
splondld credit and reputation on the London mar
ket. The original underwriters of Canadian Pacific
will probably be the warmest supporters of the
new road. So far as at present known the. Wall
Street market will not be called upon. The under
writing will be scattered over several years, and the
London marke; Is expected to take th» bonds
easily and at good rates.
