Speculative llQ\ildat!on was responsible for a tiumber of sharp declines In yesterday's stock ir-artet. chiefly in the issues In which bull ao drttr was bo pronounced la«t week and In the •prooedln* treeks of the current year. Efforts «sc«r« made to create a ecaxe orer the -weakness to the Paris market, but there was little genu ine response to the operations for lower prices, th« declines representing profit taking 1 sales •catber than selling by Investors or holders, who •or* In the present market for something more than a turn- Notwithstanding the day's losses avsntiment was not depressed; indeed, in clr tOes -where the best market news originates there rsras every expecta.tion of a recovery in to-day's or Monday's ppecniatlon of the declines suf fered yeateroay. The market was helped by the reaction. A further reduction in Quotations •would not alarm the bull element, while it would serve to improve the technical position of spec ulation. In many of the active shares declines Tin from substantial fractions to above 1 per cent. New-York Central, for instance, losing lor the day M per cent on a volume of busi ness made up In most part of the operations of commission house traders, who desired to con vert their paper profits into cosh. Other weak features were supplied by Colorado Fuel and Iron. Ateblcon, Baltimore and Ohio, Chesapeake and Ohio. St. Paul. Consolidated Gas, Pennsyl vania, Reading. Southern Pacific, Canadian Pa cific and Union Pacific, the last named issue closing at a net loss of 2?' 8 per cent. There were few strong features, the only Important ex ceptions to* The downward movement being the American Hide and Leather shares, American Emeltlng and St. L«ou!s Southwestern stock. It Is understood that the St. Louis Southwestern Issues will soon! be advanced to a much higher level. Selling in the afternoon was influenced to come extent by unfavorable forecasts of to day's bank statement, apparently indicating a large falling off in cash and reserve holdings. "While the local banks lost in the week, accord- Ing to the known movement of money, over $11,000,000. to-day's Clearing: House exhibit may not 6htfw a large decrease in the reserve above legal requirements, as It Is likely that there will be a heavy enough contraction in loans and deposits to offset to a great extent the decline In cash. The country banks have been withdrawing their funds from the city "banks and lending their balances in the local snarket, an operation that naturally will serve to reduce the deposits of the Clearing House Institutions. Money rates were unchanged from the preceding day, while foreign exchange was egain lower. BOND MARKET TRADING. GOVERNMENT BONDS.— Mark«t steady. Final Quotations follow: Bid. Asked. 1 Bid. Asked. CONDITION OF TRADE. "Dun's Review" says: Higher temperature is still needed to bring out full spring activity at many points, but improve ment is discerned in almost all departments. Mer cantile payments are also more prompt, which adds materially to the feeling of confidence. Railway earnings, whirl) have been falling behind in com parison with last yea.-, wore S.i per cent larger for the first week of March, and there is compara tively little complaint of freight congestion. A good boating 3tage has produced large coal shipments at Pittsbur? and the movement of coke from Con nellsyiUe ecllps^a all previous records. This free distribution of fuel testifies to the activity of manu facturing plants, especially in the Iron and steel Industry. Floods have done some damage on tho Pacific Coast, but farming prospects thore. as in most other sections, arc decidedly favorable La'-ce farm reserves of corn and oats are not ' accom panied by depressed prices, and the small wlvvit stocks are neutralized by most profitable quota tions Foreign commerce returns show unprece dented Imports in February, and for the last week at this port alone there was an mcr ea of $6 35£ ISB compared with tho corresponding time of i<wu' while exports rose $1,759,318. -Money markets are easy considering th*_ Treasury withdrawals from the banks and the better demand In commercial and speculative channels, and th<- average of th.« sixty most active railway securities row at- all recent records, approaching within $1 33 of the hi"h water mark established in Soptomber ]<■<!» Bank exchanges at New-York were swelled by ■took market activity, pales of securities being more than double those of the tamo week last year which partly accounts for the increase of 87.3 per cent. A other leading cities the gain was 17.2 pVr cent. • "Brads treat's" says. Spring trade and outdoor activities gather fore* as the month advances. Better weather, small in terior stocks and confidence in the future Induce a wider distribution la practically all sections except the South, where considerable Irregularity appears «ome markets reporting expansion, while others advlae of contraction, compared with a year ago DryKoods, clothing, grocrles, shoes. nard 'J lr *'*l farm implemonts. lumbt-r and building material show relatively most activity. AH reports indicate great activity in railway circles. Merchandis* sn ments. high class freight, are very **rg«. ,•*■*- tonnage is heavy for this season, and complaints of car shortage still come, especially from the iron, coke and lumber trades, though th« situation has Improved slightly. Groa» reoelpts for January fsdned 6 per cent, while net increased 12 per cent. or February preliminary figures show m. decrease of 2 per cent in gross, which may be. however, lessened by later and fuller returns from large sys tems. Winter wheat reports, despite some talk or freezing, are good, as a whole, and farm, prepara tions and actual planting tn the South are being actively pushed. A smaller acreage of cotton >s apparently a foregone conclusion. Bank clearings swelled by speculation, exceed last week's, and enormously surpass last year's totals, four-fifths of all cities showing gains. Collections still lag, but money has turned firmer, probably a reflection of increased demands in regular trade lines. A feat ure of the spring outlook is the confidence, in a very large amount of building being dona in nearly all parts of the country, OUTSIDE SECURITIES. The market for outside securities was character ized by similar conditions to thosa which existed Thursday. There was a fair degree of activity ex hibited throughout the session, but an irregular tendency was manifested. The initial transactions were in most Instances slightly higher, but on every advance considerable selling resulted in a reaction. The fluctuations In either direction, however, did not extend to more than 1 per cent generally. In terest was centred largely in Northern Securities, particularly in the stubs. In the early dealings an advance of $150 was scored in the latter, but at the high figure selling orders appeared, which broke the price $250. but subsequently there was a recov ery to nearly the highest point. The dealings were large. The stock moved irregularly. Opening slightly highen it broke 1 per cent, but subsequently rallied to the highest point. International Mercantile Ma rine issues opened strong, but before the noon hour reacted sharply under realizing. American Writing shares moved up sharply. Interborough Rapid Transit opened up 2 per cent, but before the close fell to the lowest point. Mackay Issues were steady. Havana Tobacco common was down 2 per cent. International Silver preferred, after an early gain of 3 per cent, lost all the advance. The copper shares wero irregular. British Columbia was strung at an advance of % per cent.
