Ptock market values moved in the direction of. higher quotations in the greater part of the five hours of tracing, with the chief improvement in the Southern irun and co:>l shares. Union Paciflc. the Erie issues. (-•York Central. Canadian Pacific and some of the specialties. In these so curiiks advances ran above 1 per cent on a class of bcytns that represented accumulation for the account of some of the strongest operators in the financial district. nmliaion houses were Cood buyers, sentiment v.as bullish throughout the Ptrect and oj inion favored the idea that prices would continue to move toward a better level in the next few weeks, especially In the high pxade issues that are being handled by powerful sj.. eolatlvs jx*>ls. There were no de velopments in the day that had a material bear ing on the movement of values, the opinion of the Supreme Court in the Northern Securities C£s<e exciting little comment, as it v.as merely a forrr.al filing; • f a ilnrlslmi that was rendered •B«-v«-rsl weel:s ago. The actual handing down of i!:e mandate in this case was postponed until April 37. so that there can be no di. iril;ution of the as?eis of the company until that day. when they will be turned over to the various interests In lbs property under the Morgan-Hill plan of April, 31fi4. The adram c in Tennessee Coal ,n:d Iron of over ■even }>cints was due in great part* to an active demand from the rhorts bas?d on the improv ing prospects of a Southern iron merger, while In m my jjarts of the list the material Improve- XTjerit rc-eordod represented keen anxiety among the shorts to reverse their position, iiou!itlc-ss owinj to the well defined Indications cf the pres 4*nce in the market of a stronc bull ejement and to the failure of ths bear contingent to attract Important liquidation. Th" dem;.nd for '"an adian Pacific v. as ag..in active, both for local and outside account, and the advance in the is eue of aver 1 per cent was accompanied by buy- Ing for investors, who took the stock on its great Intrinsic merits. Attention is often drawn to this iPF-ae, for the reason that it is selling under the level of other rhares that are not worth a cent more than it is and to the fact that some of ''•• strongest American, Canadian and Lon don interests are absorbing the shares. There was an increased demand for St. Louis South western preferred. a:vj the character of the oper ations in the issue suggested the probability of material improvement in its price. The stock Is being accumulated by Intaresta who are satis fled that the condition of the property and the outlouk for industrial activity in the territory served by the company's lines warrant a better quotation for the security. Traffic conditions in the Southwest are becoming more satisfactory e\ery day, and earnings ought to be htavy in the balance of the year. Reports received yesterday from the traffic managers of the Western railroads presented much reason for encouragement over the future cf the railroad business in the United States. Ar.d the fact that the railroad men report large ♦earns in ■rings and indications of further ex pansion in receipts ought to prove of interest to every man who is interested in the material im provement of the country, inasmuch as a grow ing railroad business means general industrial prosperity throughout the land. The receipts of Craln and merchandise at Chicago in the last week for shipment east showed improvement, while the westbound tonnag-e also presented an Increase as compared with the recent past. Fac tors of this character apparently have not been entirely discounted in the stock market. Of course, there has hern a big appreciation in val ues as compared with the low figures of 1904, but It Is contended by the best market observers that further improvement will be recorded, and that even la the high priced Issues quotations will gradually work to a better level. In expectation, therefore, that prices will sell higher, the greater •number of holders are maintaining a firm grip en their securities possessions, especially of the ■bares of undoubted intrinsic merit, as. for in stance. Union Pacific, New-York Central. St. Paul, Pennsylvania. I'nited States Steel pre ferred and Canadian Pacific. The small bull ex^culator. however, should keep his weather eye open for the passing squalls that are apt to de velop before a protracted period of bear activity begir.s. ney rates undoubtedly will remain at their present firnier level until the middle of the month at least, but ths current range of loan quotations Is not so hiph that it discourages speculative ac tivity on the Stock Exchange. The leading lank** in New-York are closely allied with the lntcrt^ts which are Identified with the big rail roads and other corporations and with the cam paign for higher prices in securities, and It is therefore not probable that any disturbance will be permitted to develop, an indication of which v.as presented In Saturday's bank statement, which showed an increase in reserve above legal eoaSßts. through the ability of the local institutions connected with the Clearing Houao to reduce their loan accounts. A few banks practically make the bank etatement. and these bunks have almost absolute control of the money market. Why. therefore, as long as these con terns arc in favor of .1 bull market for securities, fhould there be any uneasiness over the position cf the local loan market? BONO MARKET TRADING. FOREIGN TRADING— Foreign houses dealt in 30,006 shares in the local market, buying lo.flOO on balance. In London consols were rather easier, as this is the monthly settling day in them. Foreign bonds wore unchanged, but there w*-re noticeably fewer peace rumors. The copper stocks were weak and the Kaffir issues showed considerable irregu larity. Money was in fair demand, but should work easior during the week. INTERNATIONAL POWER AND THE MER GER.— explanation of the activity in Interna tional Power, it i.«. said on good authority that the comp.tny will be a large beucfletary as a result of the Southern iron and steel merger. A dispatch from Birmingham reports that the output of coal for March by the Alabama Conrolidated Coal and Iron Company was 62,000 tons, or at the rate of nearly 730,000 tons a year, and this is being steadily increased. It is ais.-, reported that contracts are being let for the construction work and machinery of the new furnace to be built by the company. These contracts will include a 8.66D-horsepower boiler plant, four large blowing engines, skip hoist, etc.- Th* . company now has a capacity of about 180.000 tens of iron, but the new furnace will in crease this to -■'.' «i tons a year. WESTERN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS.-Enormous shipments of ccrn ar.d decidedly cheap operation of railroads have been the feature of the week in the West, in March. 1:01. every State between Chicago and the Rockies in the North was still within the frosi belt and no farm work had been don* up to April. 1. This year th«- weather has been remark ably open practiccliy all through March. The corn movement has h-tn from 4.000.000 to 5.000.C00 bushels a wtek at primary p>.j:its. practically double the movement last year. For the- Jlrst time in the year Rock Island. Atchison an<! Missouri Paciflc ofllciaU are cheerful. All of them r«-r-ort the car situation satisfactory. Northwestern lines also re port that conditions are bad to norsial on their lines, and tl.at they have about an equal supply of cars. . TKNXESSEE COAL AND IRON.-According to the programme at present, there will be no signifi cant Changes made in the Uiractonite of the Tfn nessec CoaJ and Iron Company at the annual meet lnp. to be held on May 2. The books will close for toe meeting on April 10. and it is expected ta-tt if there is any effort on the part of those who have been actumulatinc the stock to inorease their hold ins, it W.MJI be done prior to the closing of the bo6ks. The so-called Hanover Bank crowd has ample stock to control tho annual meeting. EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY.— annual re port of the Eastman Kodak Company states that the surplus of 51.057.75 l for the year la shown after paying 6 per cent on the preferred stock and 10 per eor.t on the common, and after charging oft liberal amounts for depreciation on the various plants In t!.e year a pro lit of $lS.3a accrued to the com pmy upon the realisation of certain properties pre viously acquired on favorable terms through one of the subsidiary companies. This profit will be held as available lor capit;;! purposes only. it Is not included in the earnings. COLORADO FUEL.— The bull talk on Colorado Fuel appeared to come from fairly responsible quarters. The stock acted remarkably well. and. ln riew of the way the control is held, cannot be plentiful. Tho idea is that tho Standard Oil in tenst means to make the> market pay liberally for the financial assistance given to the company." The movement in Colorado Southern issues wus to some extent sympathetic as the opportunity was a goud one for the Hawley pool to mark up the price. ONTARIO AND WESTERN— Mr. Mellens state ments about Ontario and Western and the relations between New-York Central and New-Haven in con nection with it were taken as being Intended to prepare the way for the formal announcement of a change of ownership, with perhaps also a guaran tee for the minority stock as the Webb-Twombly pool holds so much of the latter. GATES PARTY ACTIVE.— G. Gates & Co. took a leading part ln the afternoon advance. buying 1 stocks round the room and paying special attention to Bteel preferred and Union Pacific, of which they took 10.t»> shares each. The Western crowd seems to have definitely cust ln its lot with the bulls. MISSOURI PACIFIC— In spite of the strength elsewhere. trvlMl reported that neither Missouri Pacific nor Bock Island answered to attempts to p-it them up. Neither seems to have recovered from the unfavorable statements for the lirst two months of the year. PIQ IRON CERTIFICATES AT THE PROD UCE EXCHANGE.
